Aims & Characteristics

Programme Aims

The PolyU MBA is a general management programme.


The programme strengthens students' knowledge, skills and intellectual abilities as defined in the broad learning outcomes, underpinned by the specific learning objectives below.

  1. Critical and Creative Thinkin
    Learning objective (a): To analyse business cases and solve business problems by applying concepts and techniques in a critical manner.
    Learning objective (b):  To integrate concepts and provide creative solutions to business problems.
  2. Effective Communication
    Learning objective: To communicate reasoned arguments effectively, both in speech and in writing.
  3. Leadership Capabilities
    Learning objective: To demonstrate a understanding of human behaviour and the ability to influence others to achieve common goals.
  4. Global Outlook
    Learning objective: To adopt a global outlook and an understanding of cultural diversity, globalisation and their implications for business.
  5. Ethics, Responsibility and Sustainability
    Learning objective: To develop an understanding of issues surrounding ethics, social responsibility and sustainable development pertaining to the context of general management.



This programme prepares experienced managers and professionals to solve real-world management problems. The structure is intensive, comprehensive and well-designed. Taught by experienced and committed teaching staff, the programme provides exceptionally good value to students.


This programme builds on the knowledge and skills that participants have developed during their careers. In the Core Subjects, a broad managerial perspective is adopted, whilst the more specialised Elective Subjects are designed to suit the particular needs of participants and their current and future employers.


Overall, the programme seeks to serve the general management needs of all participants while permitting some specialisation in areas of particular relevance to some students.

Recognition & Prospects

The PolyU MBA has been developing general managers in Hong Kong since 1990. Its structure, content and teaching approaches have been benchmarked against those of the best programmes in the world.


Programme Structure

The programme requires a total of 39 credits.

  • The first year of the programme is designed to introduce students to all of the major business functions.
  • The second year provides more in-depth management knowledge. A wide range of Electives is available for selection.
  • Students who have completed 39 credits will be awarded Master of Business Administration.

i. The subjects have been included in the list of reimbursable courses under the Continuing Education Fund (CEF). 

  ii. The Master of Business Administration programme is recognised under the Qualifications Framework (QF Level 6).

All students are required to complete a total of 9 credits of Electives. Those pursuing an award with a specified stream should choose only from the Stream Electives of the chosen stream. Those not opting for a study stream can choose from the Stream Electives or Other Electives.

i. Programme structure, course names and content are subject to continuous review and change.

ii. Not all subjects will be offered in a given year, subject to factors such as staff availability, student enrolment, programme resources and so on.

iii. For a given cohort, a clash-free timetable will be arranged only for the compulsory subjects. The timetable is also subject to change without prior notice.

Entrance Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree, postgraduate degree or postgraduate diploma in any area, or an equivalent professional qualification; and a minimum of 4 years' experience in a managerial or professional capacity; and proficiency in English;
  • Exceptionally, be aged 35 or over with post-secondary qualifications and at least 8 years of experience in a senior managerial or professional capacity, and proficiency in English.


If you are not a native speaker of English, and your Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification is awarded by institutions where the medium of instruction is not English, you are expected to fulfil the University’s minimum English language requirement for admission purpose. Other Information
  • Based on their applications, shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend selection interviews. In general, candidates are expected to demonstrate their motivation, maturity and ability to communicate in English.
  • Classes in Compulsory Subjects are normally arranged at weekends (Saturdays and Sundays). The majority of Elective Subjects are offered on weekday evenings, and a few are offered at weekends.
