Non-means-tested Loan Scheme (NLS)

The NLS offers interest-bearing loans to local full-time and part-time students to cover tuition fees. These loans are not means tested, which means that there is no assessment of family income and assets. Both government-funded and self-financed students can apply before the deadline set by the government. For details, please visit www.wfsfaa.gov.hk.

 

Continuing Education Fund (CEF)

Three subjects (HTM534, HTM535 and HTM539) of MSc/PgD in International Hospitality Management and four subjects (HTM520, HTM534, HTM535 and HTM545) of MSc/PgD in International Tourism and Convention Management have been included on the Continuing Education Fund (CEF) list of reimbursable courses. Eligible applicants will be reimbursed 80% of their fees, subject to a maximum sum of HK$20,000 (whichever is the less), on successful completion of a reimbursable course. MSc/PgD in International Hospitality Management

Programme Aims

The aim of this programme is to develop students’ knowledge and management skills in the hospitality industry through a blend of strategic perspectives and pragmatic implementation. Industry practice, management skills and research competencies are developed through interdisciplinary subject exposure, problem identification, decision-making theory and management application. Due to the global nature of the hospitality industry, this programme has an international focus while recognising the Asian context.

 

Characteristics

Students receive a flexible, global, managerial and service-oriented education, which enables them to effectively link business theories to the daily management of international hospitality businesses. To best facilitate the learning process, the programme combines practical applications with theoretical learning. Students gain the understanding, skills and latest techniques that are needed to qualify for middle to senior level positions in the industry.

 

MSc/PgD in International Tourism and Convention Management

Programme Aims

The aim of this programme is to develop students' knowledge and management skills in the tourism and convention industries through a blend of strategic perspectives and pragmatic implementations. Industry practice, management skills and research competencies are developed through interdisciplinary subject exposure, problem identification, decision-making theory and management application. Due to the global nature of the tourism and convention industry, this programme maintains an international focus while recognising the Asian context.

MSc/PgD in International Wine Management

Programme Aims

The aim of this programme is to develop students’ knowledge and management skills in wine businesses/education through a blend of strategic perspectives and pragmatic implementation. Industry practice, management skills and research competencies are developed through interdisciplinary subject exposure, problem identification, decision-making theory and management application. Due to the global nature of the wine industry, an international focus is central to this programme, with due recognition given to the Asian context.

 

Characteristics

  • Offered in Hong Kong – Asia’s world city – by the SHTM, the programme is the first of its kind in the region.
  • The SHTM focuses on international education to meet the specific demands of a truly global industry while being based in the heart of the booming Asia-Pacific region.
  • The residential study trips give students opportunities to visit renowned wine regions overseas, such as Burgundy and Bordeaux, to understand the best practices in wine production, trade and management with a view to increasing their international exposure and developing global networks.
  • Developed in consultation with noted wine industry figure Professor Jeannie Cho Lee, Master of Wine, and endorsed by key industry leaders.
  • Taught by leading academics and industry experts to ensure its relevance.
  • Highly flexible - the programme can be completed in 1.5 years or spread over 6 years.
Recognition & Prospects
  • The MSc/PgD in International Hospitality Management is accredited at the Management Level by the Institute of Hospitality. 
  • The School has passed the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) TedQual audit of Higher Tourism Educational Programmes and has received accreditation for the MSc/PgD in International Tourism and Convention Management.

Curriculum

Programme Structure

In compliance with immigration policy, overseas students can only apply for the full-time mode of study, whereas students from Hong Kong can opt for either the full-time or part-time mode of study. All subjects are taught in English only. Full-time students are expected to take a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 5 subjects per semester, whereas part-time students need to take 1 or 2 subjects per semester. Regardless of the mode of study, prospective students should note that classes are usually scheduled in the evenings from 6:30 to 9:30 pm between Monday and Friday. Additional classes may be offered during the daytime or in block-release mode.

 

All MSc students are required to achieve 31 credits for graduation, as follows:

Entrance Requirements

Admission Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree in the area of hotel and tourism management, recreation and leisure management, business studies, management, accounting and finance or another business and management related area with industry work experience of not less than one year; 
    OR
  • A Bachelor's degree in an area other than those listed above, with current or past employment in the hotel and tourism industry for not less than one year;
    OR
  • Equivalent professional qualifications may also be considered.
     

Notes: 

  1. Applicants who possesses at least 6 months of work experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis. If accepted, students will be required to make up the shortfall of work experience by successfully completing the subject “Management Practice” prior to graduation.
  2. If you are not a native speaker of English, or your Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification is awarded by institutions where the medium of instruction is not English, you are expected to fulfil the University's minimum English language requirement for admission purpose. Please refer to the "Admission Requirements" section for details.
  3. Applicants may be required to attend interviews or tests to further demonstrate their language proficiency.
  4. Our School considers applications on a rolling basis until all places are filled. Applicants are highly encouraged to apply for admission as early as possible

 

Documents to prepare

All applicants should also submit the following documents together with a completed online application form: 

  • Personal resume (CV);
  • The graduation certificate of their undergraduate degree (see notes below);
  • Copies of transcripts from all colleges and universities attended (see notes below);
  • Proof of current and past employment record(s);
  • A self-recommendation letter that includes self-introduction, career aspirations and reasons for pursuing study in this programme (not more than 400 words);
  • Proof of TOFEL or IELTS results to demonstrate English proficiency;
  • At least one letter of recommendation from either their employer or university;
  • Other professional records or attainments, if any.
     

Notes

  1. Applicants whose qualifications were attained from the Chinese mainland are required to provide their Academic Credential (学历证书) to prove that they have completed their academic learning in an institution under the Ministry of Education (MoE) system and were admitted to the institution in accordance with the standards stipulated by the MoE.
  2. Further to the above, the applicants concerned are required to provide a Degree Certificate (学位证书) to certify their level of academic attainment (i.e. Bachelor's, Master's or doctoral level) and to confirm that the certificate was issued by a tertiary institution approved by the MoE.
  3. If the applicant's graduation certificate(s)/academic transcript(s) is/are not written in English, s/he should provide an official and translated copy of each graduation certificate or academic transcript in English to serve the admissions purpose. Otherwise, the application may not be considered.
