Aims & Characteristics

Programme Aims

This programme combines sound scientific principles with engineering applications to help students develop into competent and effective engineering professionals in the areas of integrated circuit design, electronics, telecommunications, computers, embedded systems, and multimedia technologies and programming. By developing their professional competence and problem solving and critical thinking skills, we help ensure that our graduates are capable of meeting the challenges of the rapidly changing engineering profession and applying what they have learnt in making contributions to industry and society.

As electronic products become more miniaturised, intelligent and personal, they also become more influential in our daily lives. Examples of such products include digital cameras, smartphones, smart watches, GPS devices, digital entertainment devices, electronic medical equipment, wearable devices, and so on. The design, development and manufacture of these products require professional competence in the areas of electronics, integrated circuits, computers, telecommunications, multimedia signal processing, software, embedded systems, and programming, which form the subject matter of this programme.

The programme emphasises both theory and applications in learning and teaching. The curriculum includes lectures, projects, presentations, laboratory exercises and various industrial placement opportunities. After completing the fundamental subjects in Years One and Two, students choose their professional development specialism by selecting subjects in different areas in Years Three and Four.

Students may also engage in an Exchange Scheme and earn recognized credits at a university outside of Hong Kong for one semester during Year Three.

The programme provides ample workplace training opportunities for students to gain work experience within and outside Hong Kong.

Recognition & Prospects

Professional Recognition

The programme has been granted provisional accreditation by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE). Provisional Accreditation Status offers all of the rights and privileges of accreditation status.

Career Prospects

Demand for engineering professionals in the manufacturing, service and telecommunications sectors of Hong Kong is very high. As Hong Kong’s economy continues to grow, graduates in electronic and information engineering are greatly needed to fill such posts as commercial, design and production engineers, sales and marketing engineers, and executives in the design and manufacture of various electronic and digital products, computer systems, networks, software, telecommunications and the Internet. Some of our graduates pursue further study or research in Hong Kong and abroad.

During Years One and Two, students study a set of fundamental subjects in electronics, engineering science, programming, information technology, mathematics and English. In Year Three, students study more advanced and specialized subjects in the areas of telecommunications, computers, data and computer communications, integrated circuits, embedded systems and programming. In Year Four, students can choose from a list of technical Elective Subjects and complete a Capstone Project to strengthen their technical knowledge and skills.
