  • BA(Hons) in Product Design (Stream Code: PRD).

Aims & Characteristics

Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes

The BA(Hons) Scheme in Design aims to educate innovative and mindful problem-solvers who are sensitive to social needs, and to equip them with the necessary intellectual, technical and managerial skills to facilitate their development as designers who will shape contemporary culture and invent desirable futures.

 

Programme Characteristics

Students applying for the Scheme may choose between four design disciplines:  

  • BA(Hons) in Advertising Design,
  • BA(Hons) in Communication Design,
  • BA(Hons) in Environment and Interior Design; and
  • BA(Hons) in Product Design.

 

The BA(Hons) Scheme in Design offers students a design education that is attuned to social trends and is sensitive to change. The School encourages students to think critically, learn independently and in teams, and experiment with dynamic, multilayered design processes that encourage them to weave culture and industry strands into appropriate social narratives.

 

The School also encourages the development of creative thinking through independent learning, experimentation with creative and contextual research processes and the questioning of existing design paradigms. The programme provides students with opportunities to participate in international collaborative projects and enrol on student exchange programmes. The School’s close relationship with the design industry allows students to engage in real-world design projects with input from the industry, along with summer industrial internships.

Recognition & Prospects

Career Prospects

Graduates of the BA(Hons) in Advertising Design can pursue careers in the advertising industry as art directors, copywriters, interactive designers, account executives and marketing executives.

 

Graduates from BA(Hons) in Communication Design can pursue design careers covering corporate identity, publications, Web, environmental graphic design, exhibitions and packaging, and newly emerging areas such as information design, motion graphics for television and film and interaction and user experience design.

 

Graduates of the BA(Hons) in Environment and Interior Design can pursue careers in interior architecture professions and related design industries. Graduates gain knowledge of how interior design intersects with other spatial and environmental disciplines in the design of the built environment, providing a gateway to further educational opportunities in landscape design, urban design and architecture. Graduates are able to choose from a wide range of career paths in spatial and environmental design.

 

Graduates of the BA(Hons) in Product Design can pursue careers as industrial/product designers, product stylists, concept innovators, design managers, entrepreneurs, designers for product manufacturers and trading companies, or be employed by product design consultancies.

Curriculum

The BA (Hons) Scheme in Design is typically undertaken over four years of full-time study.

  • Year 1 introduces students to their chosen disciplines and creates enthusiasm in them through subjects such as the Freshman Seminar. The year encourages students to learn while providing a broad-based foundation in common design skills and thinking within a design discipline.
  • Year 2 provides students with the opportunity to investigate the characteristics of the discipline they choose, explore their interests and develop their strengths.
  • Year 3 allows the study path to be consolidated in Design Studios and enriched by continued discipline-specific subjects and cooperation with other students in multidisciplinary common compulsory subjects.
  • Year 4, the final year, develops students’ critical ability in design appreciation, the different perspectives of design thinking, and their own execution processes. They are increasingly allowed to negotiate project outcomes, while developing a personal portfolio to a professional standard. This year encourages personal development. Graduates are prepared for employment or for postgraduate studies.

 

The core subjects of the issue-based design studio address contemporary aspects of human existence and the ambition to project desirable futures. Mindful of the cultural implications of technology, projects are developed with the user at the centre and a critical appreciation of social trends, reflecting a humanistic teaching and learning mode running across the scheme’s four design disciplines.

 

The total credit requirement for graduation is 124, including 30 credits of General University Requirements Subjects, 20 of common Compulsory Subjects and 74 of Discipline-Specific Subjects and Electives.

The School of Design welcomes applications from students with a board range of academic and cultural interests. Student applications from both Arts and Sciences streams are accepted, and those who have an interest in design, liberal studies, visual arts and/or other cultural and technology disciplines are encouraged to apply to the programme.

Other Information

  • Only applicants who choose this programme as their Band A choice throughout the application process, and fulfil the University's minimum entrance requirements, will be considered.
  • All applicants are required to declare their intended choice of programme Major before the aptitude test stage. 
  • For the BA (Hons) in Advertising Design, BA (Hons) in Communication Design and BA (Hons) in Environment and Interior Design, only those applicants who participate in the aptitude test and portfolio submission in mid/end May of the same year will be considered.
  • For the BA (Hons) in Product Design, only those applicants who participate in the aptitude test in mid/end May of the same year will be considered.
  • Applicants who passed the aptitude test and with top HKDSE scores (among the top 25% prioritisation score range as a whole) will be directly offered a place in the Scheme, without having to attend an interview.
