Aims & Characteristics

Programme Aims & Learning outcomes

We prepare students to become technologists in the field of civil engineering. The programme also provides a sound educational background for those students who wish to pursue higher-level study in the same field.

Programme Characteristics

We teach students to apply civil engineering knowledge to solve construction problems and to communicate clearly and effectively in spoken, written and graphical presentations. This programme provides fundamental training in civil engineering, which means that students may pursue further study by joining the BEng(Hons) in Civil Engineering programme with credit transfer if they graduate with excellent academic results.

Recognition & Prospects

Professional Recognition

Full accreditation was granted to the programme by The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) in 2017. Graduates are granted full exemption from the academic requirements of Associate Membership of HKIE.

Career Prospects

Employment opportunities are available as technical officers and supervisors in both public and private sectors, such as Civil Engineering and Development Department, Drainage Services Department, Highways Department, Housing Department of the HKSAR Government, civil engineering consultants and construction companies, etc.

  • A core of comprehensive civil engineering subjects is taught to equip students with sufficient basic knowledge of structural, hydraulic and geotechnical engineering for civil works.
  • In Year Two, students are exposed to practical subjects such as Construction Technology and Temporary Works, Highway Engineering, Structural Steel Design and Structural Concrete Design, so they can quickly adapt to a work environment when they graduate.
