Introduction


Nurturing students for the construction and real estate industries since 1937, the Department of Building and Real Estate (BRE) has a distinctive history and is internationally recognised for its academic and research excellence.  BRE has a multi-disciplinary team of academic staff who possess expertise in the respective fields of surveying, engineering, construction health and safety, town planning, building technology, real estate, finance, law and economics, etc.  The undergraduate and postgraduate programmes of BRE nurture more than 500 graduates each year.   With their knowledge and skills, BRE alumni have contributed to the prosperity of the region and beyond.  Addressing complex challenges with tailored-made solutions, BRE is committed to impactful research projects and consultancies, with focuses on ‘Construction Health and Safety’, ‘Sustainable Urban Systems’ and ‘Digital Construction’.

Tapping into the opportunities ahead, in particular the Greater Bay Area, BRE shall assume a proactive role to transcend frontiers and advance knowledge in pursuit of a sustainable built environment.

Research Facilities


Smart Construction Laboratory 

 

The Smart Construction Laboratory has been providing industrial services covering and extending the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM), process simulation solutions and professional training to the construction industry. Construction Virtual Prototyping (CVP) provides a modelling and simulation environment so powerful that the production, fabrication and assembly of construction components, including the associated operational processes, can be simulated on a computer. The laboratory has secured a sizable amount of funding from industry and other sources.

 

Ng Wing Hong Laboratory for Sustainable City

 

This high-level laboratory provides an information technology infrastructure for examining the sustainable development of Hong Kong at the building and city level. The laboratory facilitates the archiving, processing and retrieval of databases and information in multi-media formats. It operates at the highest international standards and is recognised as an international leader in the field, enabling it to take advantage of the new technologies that support its contribution to knowledge. The lab seeks partners within the university and the external environment (including industry and other universities) to address the complex issues facing the built environment.

 

Building Technology Laboratory

 

The laboratory provides demonstration classes and hands-on building technology experiments on structural mechanics, concrete testing and non-destructive techniques for building diagnostics and inspection. Computer-based learning and simulation software such as Matlab and ANSYS have also contributed to the teaching and learning of temporary formwork and false work design, scaffolding and excavation techniques, reinforced concrete beam and column design, etc. In addition, our laboratory has been substantially enhanced in the fields of building health monitoring and non-destructive building material testing.  

 

IT Teaching Room

 

Students can use any of the PC stations in the IT Teaching Room on a first-come, first-served basis during non-teaching sessions.  

 

Multimedia Communication Centre

 

The Multimedia Communication Centre (MMCC) is an ideal learning platform for our staff and students to develop their multimedia skills by providing a comprehensive set of multimedia equipment, the latest software, technical support and training programmes.

 

Project Studios

 

The two studios are interconnected with a sliding partition, so they can be used either as two separate rooms or combined into one. They are designed to provide specialist teaching rooms for group project work using the tools of the trade commonly found in construction firms. Thus, together with other BRE teaching space, the studios provide a real-life environment in which a construction business office can be re-created.
