Introduction


The Department of Health Technology and Informatics offers opportunities for research studies leading to Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in the following research areas.

 

Research Areas


Cancer

There are eight sub-thematic areas within the thematic area of cancer:

 

  • Development of cancer treatment approaches
  • Development of imaging techniques for cancer diagnosis
  • Discovery of biomarkers for cancer diagnosis
  • Immune regulation of cancer progression and therapy
  • Management of cancer treatment side-effects
  • Molecular mechanisms of cancer for diagnosis and treatment
  • Monitoring and predicting cancer treatment outcomes
  • Radiation dosimetry and protection

Haemodynamic and Vascular Disorders

There are four sub-thematic areas within the thematic area of haemodynamic and vascular disorders:

 

  • Body haemodynamic monitoring and blood flow assessment
  • Development of imaging techniques for vascular disorders diagnosis
  • Imaging diagnosis and monitoring of vascular disorders
  • Molecular mechanisms of vascular disorders for diagnosis and treatment

Immunity and Infection

There are seven sub-thematic areas within the thematic area of immunity and infection:

 

  • Developmental immunology
  • Ecology of microbiome and biofilms
  • Imaging technologies for identification of immune cells
  • Microbial virulence and drug resistance mechanisms
  • Molecular epidemiology of infectious diseases
  • Novel molecular technologies for identifying pathogenic microorganisms
  • Vaccinology and allergology

Metabolic and Ocular Disorders

There are five sub-thematic areas within the thematic area of metabolic and ocular disorders:

 

  • Discovery of biomarkers for metabolic and ocular disorders diagnosis
  • Discovery of imaging markers for metabolic disorders diagnosis
  • Immune regulation of metabolic homeostasis
  • Molecular mechanisms of metabolic and ocular disorders for diagnosis and treatment
  • Monitoring and predicting metabolic disorders treatment outcomes

Research Facilities


The Department of Health Technology and Informatics is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment to facilitate different areas of research in the Department.

 

Other Information


Preference will be given to the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme candidates.  The application deadline for the 2020-21 Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme will be on 2 December 2019.
