Aims & Characteristics

Programme Aims

The programme aims to broaden and deepen students' knowledge in the construction and real estate sectors.

 

We provide:

  • Up-to-date knowledge in the construction and real estate sectors based on contemporary research findings;
  • Specific specialist skills that are required in the construction and real estate sectors, and beyond the first undergraduate degree level; and
  • The opportunity for students to study construction and real estate practices in the Chinese mainland.

 

Characteristics

This programme suits graduates and professionals who are qualified in architecture, building, building services engineering, building surveying, civil engineering, construction management, quantity surveying, project management, property management, real estate or town planning at various levels of responsibility. It offers students the flexibility to choose subjects from the disciplines of construction, planning and development or commercial property.

Recognition & Prospects

The MSc programme is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) as meeting their academic requirements. MSc graduates may apply for the full membership of the RICS based on their appropriate period of relevant work experience in the construction and/or real estate sectors.

Curriculum

Programme Structure

This mixed-mode programme is offered within the Faculty Taught Postgraduate Scheme in Construction and Environment. Students can pursue their studies in either the full-time mode or the part-time mode. Depending on their pace of study, they should normally be able to complete the programme in 1 year for full-time study or in 2.5 years for part-time study. Students are required to attend classes during the daytime and in the evening if they choose the full-time mode of study.

 

Students can select from a wide range of subjects that are offered under the Taught Postgraduate Scheme in Construction and Environment within the Faculty. In general, each subject will require one 3-hour weekday evening class per week over a 13-week semester, except those 'weekend' and 'daytime' subjects marked with '#'. Designated subjects will be offered to full-time students during the daytime on weekdays if necessary. Full-time MSc students are strongly recommended to take 7 taught subjects and the Dissertation in a normal study period of one academic year. Students should complete the Dissertation within a normal period of 3 semesters including the Summer Semester (from June to August inclusive).

 

For the MSc (30 credits required)

Students must complete: 
(a) 7 subjects (3 credits each), with at least 4 Core Subjects, including Research & Consultancy Techniques for Construction & Real Estate, AND a Dissertation (9 credits) that is relevant to construction and/or real estate; or 
(b) 10 subjects (3 credits each), with at least 7 Core Subjects, including Research & Consultancy Techniques for Construction & Real Estate, AND the dissertation replacement subject Professional Workshop & Project (3 credits).

 

For the PgD (21 credits required) 
Students must complete 7 subjects (3 credits each), with at least 4 Core Subjects, including Research & Consultancy Techniques for Construction & Real Estate.

* These subjects have been included in the Continuing Education Fund (CEF) list of reimbursable courses, subject to their stipulated minimum attendance requirements. Details can be found at www.wfsfaa.gov.hk/cef.

 

# Each of these subjects consists of 3 full-day workshops with 24 hours of face-to-face class contact with the provision of a self-learning study guide, recommended textbook and reading materials (normally held daytime during weekends, including both Saturdays and Sundays) in Hong Kong in each semester.

Entrance Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree with Honours;
    OR
  • A Bachelor's degree in a construction or real estate related discipline; 
    OR
  • Corporate membership of a relevant professional institution with substantial experience in the construction or real estate sector.

 

Relevant employment in industry, commerce or public administration is preferred.

 

In exceptional circumstances, applicants with qualifications other than those mentioned above may be admitted.

 

If you are not a native speaker of English, and your Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification is awarded by institutions where the medium of instruction is not English, you are expected to fulfil the University’s minimum English language requirement for admission purpose. Student Message


I gained a lot from studying for this high-quality ’s degree, not only enriching my knowledge of the real estate sector but also improving my analytical skills through various types of scenario-based study across different modules. The flexibility offered by the weekend mode of study provided a better chance for busy part-time students like me to enjoy school life at leisure. It was a pleasure to study at PolyU and now I am taking up another challenge in BRE’s Construction Law to advance my knowledge to an even higher level.
