  • Switching between specialisms after admission to this MSc programme will be considered on a case-by-case basis. For example, a student who is enrolled in the Decision Science specialism can transfer to the Actuarial and Investment Science specialism, or vice versa, if he or she fulfills the specialism requirements.

Programme Aims

This programme aims to provide students with up-to-date theoretical and practical knowledge in statistics, operations research and scientific computing that is relevant to decision making and practical problem solving in engineering, finance and management. It also covers essential mathematical modelling and computational techniques that enhance students' generic skills for solving real-life problems.



Our programme provides graduate-level subjects with an emphasis on the advanced methodologies and techniques of mathematical modelling that are useful to engineers, scientists, technologists and managers.

Our focus is on applications and the use of computer packages to handle real-world data and solve practical problems.

Programme Structure

A student studying for the MSc (DS) award must complete

  • 1 Compulsory Subject (3 credits); and
  • 3 Core Subjects (9 credits); and
  • 3 Core Subjects/Elective Subjects* (9 credits); and
  • 3 additional Core Subjects or a Dissertation (9 credits).

* Elective Subjects refer to subjects offered by other departments in PolyU.

Entrance Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree with Honours in engineering, computer science, basic science, business, economics, or the equivalent (industrial or business experience will be an asset).


If you are not a native speaker of English, and your Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification is awarded by institutions where the medium of instruction is not English, you are expected to fulfil the University’s minimum English language requirement for admission purpose.
