  • EIE Alumni Scholarship
    • ​To encourage our graduates to engage in life-long learning, the Department of Electronic and Information Engineering (EIE) has established the EIE Alumni Scholarship to allow them to study in this MSc Programme. The scholarship is applicable to EIE graduates enrolling in our MSc Programme. Eligible students who obtain a grade C+ or above in an MSc subject offered by the EIE will be awarded a scholarship of an amount equivalent to 15% of the tuition fee paid for that subject. Please click here for more details.

  • MSc Studentship Project Scheme
    • To encourage students with good performance, the MSc Studentship Project Scheme was established in 2013/14 to provide studentships for MSc in EIE Students taking the Dissertation.
    • Students awarded these studentships will simultaneously undertake their MSc dissertation and research project work under the same supervisor in the capacity of a part-time Research Assistant with monthly support of $6,000 from the Department for 12 months. Programme Aims

This programme aims at providing graduates of electronic and information engineering, electrical engineering, telecommunications engineering, computer science and other related disciplines an opportunity for further study at postgraduate level. Students will embark on a broad choice of core subjects in multimedia technologies, telecommunications and electronic engineering that enable them to meet new challenges and tap new opportunities in relevant fields. Students can also acquire the latest technical know-how by registering for specialized subjects in a chosen area that focus on the cutting edge issues facing the engineering profession today. Students who have managerial responsibilities can take electives on business or management according to their interest and career needs.

 

Specialism in Multimedia Signal Processing and Communications

The specialism in Multimedia Signal Processing and Communications provides postgraduate-level professional and technical training to practitioners in the area in order to enable them to tap the ever-growing market needs and business opportunities related to multimedia technology.

Students have the flexibility to vary their studies from semester to semester according to their personal aspirations (except for non-local students, who are constrained by visa requirements). Curriculum

Programme Structure

The programme provides the option for students to engage in either the full-time study mode (taking 9 credits or more in a semester) or the part-time study mode (taking fewer than 9 credits per semester). In general, each subject requires a 3-hour class per week over a 13-week semester. Full-time students normally take 5 subjects in a semester, and part-time students usually take 2 subjects. There are subjects offered in the daytime and in the evenings.

 

Students who enrol in the MSc in Electronic and Information Engineering programme have the option to select from a wide range of subjects offered under the Postgraduate Scheme in Engineering, and from those offered by other Faculties, including Accounting, Business, Computing, Construction and Environment, Logistics and Management. They can also select combinations of subjects that allow them to graduate with a specialisation award.

 

For the MSc in Electronic and Information Engineering
Students must complete:

  • 7 taught subjects, including at least 4 EIE Core Subjects, and a Dissertation;
    OR
  • 10 taught subjects, including at least 6 EIE Core Subjects.

 

For the MSc in Electronic and Information Engineering
(Multimedia Signal Processing and Communications)

Students must complete:

  • 7 taught subjects, including at least 5 Core Subjects specified for the specialism, and a Dissertation;
    OR
  • 10 taught subjects, including at least 7 Core Subjects specified for the specialism.

Entrance Requirements

You must satisfy the following specific requirements of this programme:

  • An Honours degree in engineering, science or technology, or Chartered Engineer (CEng) status, or an equivalent qualification.

 

Consideration will also be given to candidates without Honours degrees, but who have other relevant qualifications that are supplemented by appropriate work experience.

 

If you are not a native speaker of English, and your Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification is awarded by institutions where the medium of instruction is not English, you are expected to fulfil the University’s minimum English language requirement for admission purpose. Please refer to the "Admission Requirements" section for details.
 

Individual cases will be considered on their own merit. Applicants may be required to attend interviews or tests to further demonstrate their language proficiency.

  • Concurrent Enrolment Scheme with the University of Cincinnati

    • The Faculty of Engineering (FENG) of PolyU and The University of Cincinnati (UC) College of Engineering & Applied Science (CEAS) of the U.S. jointly deliver a concurrent enrolment scheme allowing credit transfers between FENG and CEAS and contributing to the award of a Master of Science (MSc) degree from PolyU and a Master of Engineering (MEng) degree from UC. Under the arrangement, it is possible for students joining this PolyU MSc programme to complete two Master’s degrees within one year, one from PolyU(MSc) and one from UC(MEng). Student Message


My name is JIA Kanghao, and I obtained my MSc degree in Electronic and Information Engineering in 2017. Since graduating, I have been working as an engineer at the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI), responsible for the system design of 5G cellular networks. Throughout my 2 years of study at PolyU, I fulfilled my goals, not only developing detailed great knowledge of signal processing and communication technology, but also gaining valuable research experience through taking the dissertation.

 

During my studies I enrolled in seven courses, most of which were on telecommunications and artificial intelligence. What impressed me most was that each course basically has a mini project. Through accomplishing these projects, you will not only better understand the meaning of those complex formulas and theories, but also gradually learn how to exploit the knowledge to solve practical problems.

 

After the first semester of fundamental knowledge, I was able to choose a dissertation in the field of autonomous driving in the second and third semesters under the supervision of Dr Ivan Ho, who helped me a lot and gave me a lot of valuable advice during my research. In particular, our weekly group meeting enabled us to get inspiration from each other. In some ways, choosing the dissertation was a bit challenging. However, looking back after a year, I can honestly say that it was one of the best decisions that I have made, and it prompted me to make significant progress in developing my research abilities. Overall, I am sure that my study experience at PolyU will become a great asset to my future.


Jia Kanghao



I joined the part-time MSc in Electronic and Information Engineering programme at PolyU after earning my undergraduate degree. At the same time, I spent a year working as an engineer in the industry. Working and studying at the same time was not a comfortable way to live, but I was determined to live outside my comfort zone, which prepared me for the challenges ahead.

 

I enjoyed my two years as an MSc student at PolyU, and found the programme to be meaningful and worthwhile.


During the two years, I gained experience with state-of-the-art technology from different fields and subjects. I also met foreign classmates with different cultural backgrounds, and some experienced industry locals. As a result, my social network expanded. In addition to what I learned from the taught subjects, I worked on a research project. Although I faced numerous challenges, I enjoyed working on the project, as it enhanced my research experience and skill. That will definitely be of benefit to my future PhD studies.


Chu Kai Fung



I was admitted to the MSc in Electronic and Informaation Engineering programme in 2004, and was immediately frustrated that the medium of instruction was English. However, with the help of classmates and teachers, I finally conquered the language barrier and fell in love with PolyU.

 

The EIE Department also provided me with help and inspiration. When I had questions in the classroom, I could raise my hand and the professor would always be delighted to help. After classes, I could go to professors’ offices, and they were willing to help me with academic and personal issues.

 

After graduating from the programme in 2016, I became a PhD candidate and am now investigating high-level synthesis in approximate computing. It has been my great honour to be a student at PolyU. I am grateful to the University and the EIE Department for their generous and consistent support during my Master’s studies.


XU Siyuan



My time in the Mc and Information Engineering programme was both busy and fruitful. Apart from the language of instruction, the main differences between EIE/PolyU and my mainSc in Electroniland education were that in the EIE programme there were more group projects, more collaboration among students and more continuous assessment – all of which really helped to consolidate my learning.

 

Apart from taking taught subjects, I also chose the dissertation track, and the Department very generously granted me a studentship to support my work. Learning a topic via writing a dissertation is quite different from course-based learning. Rather than simply attending lectures and finishing assignments, a dissertation involves more interaction between you and your supervisor. It also requires you to articulate your ideas clearly, both orally and in written form. Thanks to the patient guidance and encouragement of my supervisor, I was able to produce some good results and present an international conference paper at the end of my MSc study. We also received an invitation from the conference organiser to submit an extended version of the conference paper to a special issue of an international journal.

 

During my time working on my dissertation, I really enjoyed doing research work, and the academic environment in the EIE programme was congenial and vibrant. Therefore, after graduating from the MSc programme, I decided to continue my EIE research as a research assistant and started my PhD study in August 2016.


LIN Weiwei



The MSc in Electronic and Information Engineering programme provides a good opportunity for students with a background in engineering to undertake further postgraduate studies. The programme offers a wide choice of subjects in electronics, telecommunications and multimedia technologies. The dissertation is also a good option for students who want to pursue more research experience.

 

During this programme, I had the opportunity to attend lectures delivered by extremely capable and knowledgeable academics. I have acquired a strong foundation in advanced engineering technologies and practical problem-solving skills through course work, laboratory exercises and mini-projects. The 9-credit dissertation has equipped me with research experience, critical thinking and independent learning ability. I was also delighted to receive a studentship from EIE for taking the dissertation and was honoured to receive the EIE Alumni Scholarship and Type I Scholarship from the Faculty of Engineering.

 

I am satisfied with my study life at PolyU, which turned out to be full of knowledge and challenges. I feel honoured to be an MSc in EIE graduate and I very much treasure this intensive and diverse learning experience.


Pang Xiaomin



Since graduating from the MSc in Electronic and Information Engineering programme, I have joined a start-up company in Beijing, where I am responsible for the research and development of computer vision algorithms.

 

In my first semester at PolyU, I took five subjects in the field of digital signal processing and pattern recognition. The lectures were theoretical and helped me to form a firm basic knowledge structure. The lab sessions also helped me to keep pace with state-of-the-art techniques and products. I found them very useful when I tried to understand and implement complicated algorithms later on in my study and work.

 

In the second and third semesters, I was devoted to my research and writing my dissertation. My supervisor, Dr Daniel Lun, guided me well, always ready to help me solve research problems. Students also held a meeting every week and took turns giving presentations. I could show what I was doing and ask for suggestions, and frequently gained inspiration from other group members. Such an environment of mutual learning helped me progress rapidly. I not only gained professional knowledge from studying at PolyU, but also developed communication skills and gained research experience.


Liu Xinmin, Simon



During my two years of study at the EIE Department, I have gained a lot from the classes and my research work. Through great effort, I earned a 3.9 GPA in the first semester and won the chance to write a thesis with full studentship support in the latter 3 semesters.

 

Study life here is totally different from what I experienced in mainland China: it emphasises understanding rather than just remembering equations. Courses here train a person to think logically and critically, and to solve problems. Research here also tests a student’s creativity and perseverance. After your time at PolyU, you will find yourself more mature, confident and intelligent, and you will be proud of what you have achieved.
