Programme Aims

The programme aims:

(a) to nurture professionals and specialists with professional competence, strategic thinking and lifelong learning capability in biomedical engineering field;

(b) to provide students with modern engineering knowledge and advanced technology tools necessary for biomedical engineering practice;

(c) to enable students with critical thinking and problem-solving skills in biomedical engineering field through a high quality education.

 

Characteristics

The Biomedical Engineering award adopts an interdisciplinary approach to teaching and learning. Students from different disciplines are grouped and guided to work on assigned clinical problems, which ensures that our subjects are clinically relevant and technically practical, fosters team spirit, and equips graduates with the skills necessary to work in multidisciplinary teams.

This taught postgraduate programme is an ideal choice for those who would like to pursue advanced education in biomedical engineering. The programme addresses the growing importance of the development of state of the art medical devices and healthcare technology for affordable healthcare. It is designed for engineers, scientists and health professionals who are interested in the health technology field. We provide students with a broad-based knowledge of advances in biomedical engineering, thus enhancing their ability to develop and apply technology in health and rehabilitation care.

Curriculum

Programme Structure

The programme offers a number of core subjects in Biomedical Engineering, and other subjects of common concern in the health technology and engineering fields. In general, each subject requires one evening class per week over a 13-week semester.

 

Award Requirements

Students should complete 1 Compulsory Subject, 4 Core Subjects, a research-based Dissertation or 3 other Core Subjects, plus 2 Other Subjects. Students are encouraged to select a dissertation topic that is relevant to their professional and personal interests.

 

Students who successfully complete 18 credits but decide not to continue with the course of MSc study may request to be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma (PgD) in Biomedical Engineering if they have successfully completed 1 Compulsory Subject, 4 Core Subjects and 1 Elective Subject.

Entrance Requirements

You must satisfy the following specific requirements of this programme:

  • A Bachelor's degree in engineering or applied sciences; 
    OR
  • A degree in a healthcare discipline or a related field;
    OR
  • An equivalent qualification.

 

Relevant post-qualification experience in health-related services and industries is preferred.

 

If you are not a native speaker of English, and your Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification is awarded by institutions where the medium of instruction is not English, you are expected to fulfil the University’s minimum English language requirement for admission purpose. Student Message


My passion for improving the quality of people’s healthcare drove me to do a Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have completed the MSc BME programme at PolyU. The flexibility of the curriculum has increased and expanded my interest in BME. I was able to select from a pool of interdisciplinary courses related to biomaterials, nanobiotechnology, bioimaging, biomechanics and rehabilitation engineering, based on my background and requirements. I particularly enjoyed the valuable opportunity I had to prepare my thesis on my research project of using nanomaterials for point-of-care DNA detection. Although it was challenging, the support of my supervisor, the lab staff, and my classmates helped me to succeed.

 

I found the programme rewarding not only because of the knowledge I acquired, but also for the skills and confidence gained in problem-solving and evaluating emerging technologies. My experiences have enabled my successful transition to PhD study in BME, and allowed me to progress in developing biomedical solutions for complex health issues. I am pleased to have started my journey here, and I am sure I will appreciate what I have gained for years to come!

My desire to become a biomedical engineer prompted me to join the MSc in Biomedical Engineering programme in PolyU after my undergraduate study. I have not only gained professional knowledge but I have also developed my global outlook and broadened my horizons. The curriculum of the programme involved a wide range of fields and was well designed, providing both basic knowledge in the biomedical engineering field and hands-on practice, which prepared me for my professional future career. During my MSc study, I chose 2D nanomaterial-based biosensing as the topic for my dissertation.

 

I worked together with other research students and staff to investigate many practical problems. Working hard and independently, I solved the problems one by one and developed my interest in nanobiotechnology. Since my graduation from MSc BME, I have continued my research as a research assistant and will soon become a PhD student in the Department of Biomedical Engineering in PolyU. Studying the MSc BME here at PolyU has really changed my life and will change my future!
