Aims & Characteristics

Programme Aims

Designed for professionals in geographic information systems (GIS), surveying or related fields, this programme equips students with the theoretical understanding and practical skills required to specialise in GIS or land and engineering surveying.

Characteristics

Our multidisciplinary programme for experienced professionals advances students' knowledge in their chosen specialist areas and expands their general perspectives on geomatics.

Recognition & Prospects

The MSc programme has been accredited by:

  • The Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors (HKIS);
  • The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS);
  • The Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (ICES); and
  • The Hong Kong Institution of Engineering Surveyors (HKIES).

(Subject to regular re-accreditation)

Curriculum

Programme Structure

Students can choose from a wide range of subjects that are offered under the Postgraduate Scheme in Construction and Environment, each generally requiring one evening class per week over a 13-week semester.

For the MSc
Students must complete 7 subjects, including at least 4 Core Subjects, and a Dissertation that is pertinent to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or Surveying. The Dissertation is optional. Alternatively, students can choose a Geomatics Project and one more Core Subject in either GIS or Surveying, depending on their stream.

For the PgD
Students must complete 7 subjects, including at least 4 Core Subjects.

Core Areas of Study

The following is a brief summary of the core areas of study. Students will be provided with detailed information on the subjects for selection upon registration.

Student Message

Geomatics is becoming an increasingly important trend. I aimed to equip myself with the necessary knowledge and technical skills to perform geo-informatics analysis, and thus applied for the MSc in Geomatics, which is a comprehensive programme covering a wide range of subjects, such as remote sensing, photogrammetry, cartographic, geo-informatics and programming. I learned much more from the theoretical lectures and practical lab sessions than I had expected.

For me, the most challenging task was completing the research project. I had to solve a real-life problem by applying practical skills and theories learned from classes within a highly constricted timeframe. Nevertheless, it was a memorable experience; the guidance and encouragement of my supervisor not only helped me to complete the task but also inspired me to find data sources and appropriate methodologies to resolve future difficulties. The process developed my genuine interest in geomatics.

I am thankful for and fortunate enough to receive constant encouragement, support and guidance from all professors and staff members in the Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics. I would highly recommend the programme to anyone who is interested in geomatics.
