Aims & Characteristics
Programme Aims
We provide advanced study opportunities for electrical engineers who work in the power and electricity utilisation industries, electrical product manufacturing industries, government organisations and contracting and consulting companies. Our students gain an in-depth knowledge of state-of-the-art advances in modern electrical science and technology such as power systems, the industrial utilisation of electrical energy, power electronics, railway systems and drive control, automation and optoelectronics.
Characteristics
The multidisciplinary nature of this programme encourages students to develop broad outlooks and allows them to take subjects in related technical fields, such as communications or computers, marketing, management or information sciences. The programme also allows students to take a combination of subjects that lead to specialisation options in Electrical Power Systems#, Power Electronics and Drives or Railway Systems*.
# HK Electric Institute assists in teaching some of the designated subjects.
* MTR Academy assists in teaching some of the designated subjects.
Recognition & Prospects
Two levels of awards, namely Master of Science Degree (MSc) and Postgraduate Diploma (PgD) are offered to students successfully after completing the required content of the respective awards. The awards can be in any one of the following areas (specialisms):
- Electrical Engineering
- Electrical Engineering (Electrical Power Systems)
- Electrical Engineering (Power Electronics and Drives)
- Electrical Engineering (Railway Systems)
Graduates of this programme have in-depth knowledge of advances in electrical engineering and are able to undertake advanced technical and managerial work in Electrical Engineering and other related Engineering fields.
Curriculum
Programme Structure
After enrolling in the MSc in Electrical Engineering programme, students can select from a wide range of subjects offered under the Postgraduate Scheme in Engineering, including core engineering subjects and subjects offered by other disciplines, such as accounting, computing, construction and the environment, and logistics. Students can also select a combination of subjects that will allow them to graduate with a Specialism Award. In general, each subject is taught through one evening class a week over a 13-week semester. Full-time students normally take three to five subjects per semester. Part-time students normally take one or two subjects per semester. Each taught subject corresponds to three credits, and the dissertation corresponds to nine credits.
For the MSc in Electrical Engineering
Students must complete:
- 7 taught subjects, including at least 4 Core Subjects, and a Dissertation;
OR - 10 taught subjects, including at least 6 Core Subjects.
For the MSc in Electrical Engineering (Electrical Power Systems)/MSc in Electrical Engineering (Power Electronics and Drives)/MSc in Electrical Engineering (Railway Systems)
Students must complete:
- 7 taught subjects, including at least 4 Core Subjects for the respective specialism, and a Dissertation pertaining to the respective specialism;
OR - 10 taught subjects, including at least 8 Core Subjects, with at least 6 corresponding to the respective specialism.
Note - Most of the subjects are offered on a 2-year rolling base. Students may not be able to take 6 Core Subjects in the specified specialism in a single year.
Core Areas of Study
This is a brief summary of the core areas of study. Students will be provided with detailed information on the subjects for selection upon registration.
- Power System Technology, Analysis, Operation & Planning
- Electrical Traction & Drives
- Railway System Design, Operation & Maintenance
- Control & Computing
- Power Electronics & Drives
- Optoelectronics
Information on the subjects offered can be obtained at https://www.polyu.edu.hk/feng/05002.
Entrance Requirements
You must satisfy the following specific requirements of this programme:
- A Bachelor's degree with Honours in engineering, science or technology, or qualifications that satisfy the academic requirements for Corporate Membership of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE), or the equivalent.
Consideration will also be given to candidates without Honours degrees who have other relevant qualifications supplemented by appropriate work experience.
If you are not a native speaker of English, and your Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification is awarded by institutions where the medium of instruction is not English, you are expected to fulfil the University’s minimum English language requirement for admission purpose. Please refer to the "Admission Requirements" section for details.
