For students who do not have Level 2 or above in HKDSE Physics / Combined Science with Physics or equivalent, 3 additional credits of Introduction to Physics are required.

Aims and Characteristics

Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes

Biomedical engineering is recognised around the world as one of the fastest growing areas of innovation. It covers a wide spectrum of applications such as sensors and instrumentation systems that are used by health professionals in their diagnostic, therapeutic, and rehabilitative practices; implants that are placed in patients for their health maintenance; prostheses, orthoses, and assistive devices that are used by people with special needs to facilitate their daily activities; and healthcare products and exercise equipment for general health promotion.

 

This developing global field requires professionals who understand both the health issues that motivate these technologies and the engineering solutions that they offer. It needs individuals with a solid foundation in both health sciences and engineering technology.

 

Our BSc(Hons) programme in Biomedical Engineering programme prepares students for such a challenging career. They have opportunities to take subjects in both life sciences and engineering, and to integrate these concepts in interdisciplinary applications to improve human health.

 

Programme Characteristics

Biomedical engineering is a discipline that advances knowledge in engineering, biology, and medicine, and improves human health through cross-disciplinary activities that integrate engineering sciences with biomedical sciences and clinical practice. Biomedical engineers develop medical devices and technologies that solve medical and health-related problems.

 

Biomedical engineering is on a spectacular fast-track development path around the world. It encompasses both engineering principles and human life science with the aim of advancing and developing knowledge in bioinstrumentation, biomaterials, medical devices and bioinformatics for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease, for patient rehabilitation and to improve health. As the geriatric population in Hong Kong and around the world will increase steadily in the coming decades, there will be a high level of demand for biomedical engineers. In 2004, the HKSAR government officially established a Medical Device Control Office under the Department of Health (www.mdco.gov.hk) to raise public awareness about the safe use of medical devices and enable traders to familiarise themselves with future mandatory requirements.

 

In addition to building on foundation knowledge through classes on campus, students also obtain at least 280 hours of action learning through industrial attachment for BME stream student internship and 560 hours for BME with P&O stream student clinical attachment. These attachments offer good opportunities for students to put what they have learned into practice and accumulate work experience for their future careers. Attachments take place in hospitals and industries, and some of our students can have overseas placements in Australia, Canada, the Chinese mainland, Singapore, South Africa, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Curriculum

  • The programme includes both academic studies and practical training in biomedical engineering.
  • Year 1 subjects such as Mathematics and Physics provide students with foundation knowledge in engineering technology.
  • Year 2 subjects further establish students' foundation knowledge in related engineering areas such as bioelectronics, biomechanics and computer programming, and establish students' foundation knowledge in health science areas such as anatomy and physiology. The programme has two streams: Biomedical Engineering (BME) and Biomedical Engineering with Prosthetics and Orthotics (BME with P&O). Each student can select one stream according to their interests and strengths. Indication of stream will be requested at the end of Year 2.
  • Year 3 subjects further strengthen students' knowledge of biomedical engineering, give them the opportunity to combine biomedical and engineering aspects such as in laboratory and design, and develop their ability in critical inquiry and thinking. One unique feature of our programme is that students take the subject Biomedical Engineering Research and Design Studies for four consecutive semesters in Year 2 and Year 3, which gives them the opportunity to integrate biomedical science with engineering. Students can start to take BME and P&O Electives on different topics according to their streams.
  • Year 4 includes advanced and applied biomedical engineering subjects and a Capstone Project. Students further take BME & P&O Electives according to their concentrations.
  • Biomedical engineering industrial internship/clinical attachments are arranged during the summer semester to broaden students' experience in the field.

Recognition and Prospects

Professional Recognition

The programme has been granted provisional accreditation by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE).

 

Students who complete the prosthetics or orthotics subjects offered in the programme are eligible to sit for the certification examination of the Hong Kong Society of Certified Prosthetist-Orthotists (HKSCPO). This programme has been accredited by the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO) as a Category I professional programme.

 

Career Prospects

Professional Engineering Practice

  • Working in medical device industrial settings, hospitals, the government, medical device regulatory firms, or other biomedical institutions, graduates apply their knowledge in biomedical engineering. This includes engineering research and development, engineering design and product development, regulatory and business aspects of engineering, such as sales, marketing, and technical management.

 

Professional Clinical Practice

  • Graduates work in hospitals and healthcare sectors, including prosthetists and orthotists, clinical and rehabilitation engineers and hospital scientific officers, and in healthcare product customer services.

 

Basic and Applied Research in Engineering, Biology, or Medicine

  • Graduates can conduct basic and applied research at universities, hospitals and in the industry in the area of biomedical engineering.
