Aims and Characteristics

Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes

This programme nurtures students to be forward-looking competent occupational therapists who can promote health and well-being of people in Hong Kong.

A combination of medical, psychological and social science subjects prepares students to enhance functional performance in the self-care, leisure and work of community-dwelling people with disabilities. Students learn how to minimise disabilities, promote health and improve quality of life of clients and their families.

The programme prepares students to deliver client-centred occupational therapy and to be committed to promote equal opportunities in all members in the community. It also prepares them for lifelong helping careers in which they will empower clients to manage their disabilities, educate the public about healthy and meaningful living and pass down their knowledge to the new generations of therapists.

Programme Characteristics

This programme adopts an outcome-based learning approach and integrates academic and clinical education. We provide numerous excellent learning resources with up-to-date technology, such as web-based teaching and self-learning packages.

We also provide global learning experiences in occupational therapy. Fieldwork placements and academic exchange programmes are available in the Chinese mainland and overseas.

Placement Opportunities

Clinical education is an important component of professional training and development. It is delivered through clinical placement in various settings in Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland and overseas. Students have attachments in a range of settings including hospitals, outpatient clinics, childcare centres, elderly care homes, adult training centres and workshops, or long stay care homes. Overseas clinical placements have been organised in partnership with overseas universities including Curtin University of Technology (Australia), the University of South Australia (Australia), the University of Toronto (Canada), McGill University (Canada), Metropolitan University College (Denmark), JAMK University of Applied Sciences (Finland), the University of Southern California (USA), Nanyang Polytechnic (Singapore) and Chang Gung University (Taiwan).  Further overseas placements will be arranged for students in the coming years to broaden their global perspectives.

Student Message

The Occupational Therapy (OT) programme provided me with the opportunity to acquire professional knowledge and skills from both lectures and clinical education. The programme improved my critical thinking and fostered my personal growth through various experiences and challenges.

The most impressive message I took away is that as OT professionals, we need to equip ourselves well to deliver quality services to clients. As a fresh graduate who knows that I will meet more challenges in the work environment, I will keep learning and remain confident. I look forward to becoming a well-rounded OT in the future.
