Aims and Characteristics

Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes

Students become primary eyecare practitioners with expert knowledge of the eye and the visual system. They gain the knowledge and skills that are necessary to diagnose visual problems and offer treatment options, which may be in the form of optical lenses or visual training.

The journey to becoming an eyecare practitioner begins with a strong foundation in basic life sciences, followed by a thorough grounding in the optometric sciences. In the second half of the programme, students acquire clinical skills that enable them to effectively manage a wide variety of visual problems. The five semesters of supervised clinical training in our Optometry Clinic and our satellite clinics on real patients give students many opportunities to learn to care for patients and consolidate their clinical skills and knowledge.

Throughout the programme, students learn about ethical, professional and legal issues in preparation for clinical practice.

Programme Characteristics

Students participate in clinical training in preparation to be optometrists. The training is in two phases, in the Clinical Laboratory and in the Optometry Clinic, examining real patients.

Our Optometry Clinic, which is unique in Hong Kong, provides an excellent environment for clinical training.

Curriculum

  • The programme comprises General University Requirements (GUR) and four main areas of study: basic sciences, optometric sciences, clinical sciences and clinical and professional training.
  • Years One and Two concentrate on the general education and basic sciences to establish a sound base of knowledge.
  • Years Three and Four develop students' optometric clinical techniques for clinical practice.
  • Years Four and Five focus on clinical training (a total of 5 semesters). Students examine patients and gain valuable clinical experience.
  • A research project is conducted in Years Four and Five.

Information on the subjects offered can be obtained at www.polyu.edu.hk/so.

Recognition and Prospects

Professional Recognition

Graduates are eligible for full registration on Part One of the Register of the Optometrists Board of Hong Kong (OP Board). They can also practise optometry in Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia. Our graduates are eligible to sit for the Competency in Optometry Examination (COE) and Assessment of Competence in Ocular Therapeutics (ACOT) hosted by the Optometry Council of Australia and New Zealand.

Career Prospects

Optometrists are the main providers of vision care in the community. Most of our graduates initially enter optometric practice as employees. Many subsequently establish their own practices. Some of them work in government agencies such as the Hospital Authority and the Department of Health.

Apart from optometric practice, there are also opportunities in the optical industry, particularly in the area of professional services. A small number of our graduates pursue postgraduate research studies locally and overseas.

Student Message

As a School of Optometry graduate, let me take this opportunity to welcome you all. Optometrists are primary health care professionals who specialise in providing eye health and vision care services to the public. Our scope of work includes prescriptions for eyeglasses and contact lenses, and the detection and management of vision function disorders and other ocular diseases related to systemic problems such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

The School of Optometry provided me with many opportunities to learn a great deal about the basic sciences and clinical skills related to my profession. During my studies, I also served the community by conducting vision screening services in Hong Kong and in rural areas of the Chinese mainland. In addition, I had the chance to attend an exchange programme at the University of Waterloo in Canada. All of these experiences prepared me well for future challenges.

Lo Wai Jing

As a 2014 graduate, I would like to extend my warmest welcome to all of you. Studying in the Optometry programme was a dream come true for me because I want to make use of my knowledge to improve the quality of life of people. The programme not only equipped me with professional knowledge in the field, but also provided me with ample opportunities to manage patients’ eye-related problems during a placement in the School’s Optometry Clinic. Moreover, I visited Beijing Hospital and Zhongshan Ophthalmic Centre in Guangzhou, seeing different cases in their outpatient clinics and wards, and even observing surgery in operating theatres.

I am currently working as a Resident Optometrist with specialties in contact lens, anterior segment and refractive technology in the School’s Optometry Clinic. I am very glad that I can apply my knowledge in practice, including specialised clinical skills in areas such as orthokeratology and advanced contact lens fitting.

The valuable experience that I gained from my undergraduate studies and current work has definitely broadened my horizons, sharpening my problem-solving, communication and interpersonal skills. Please join us – the optometry profession – to better serve the community!

Lam Ka Wai

Studying at the School of Optometry equipped me with professional knowledge for career development. For example, I gained experience in the investigation, diagnosis and management of vision and eye diseases during clinical training in local and overseas clinics. In addition, taking part in exchanges at the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Centre in the Chinese mainland and at the Queensland University of Technology in Australia broadened my global outlook and strengthened my competitiveness.

Apart from cultivating knowledge and skills, the School nurtures students to become socially responsible through actively engaging in community projects in Hong Kong, rural areas of the Chinese mainland and other developing countries. By participating in different vision screenings, I realised how important the role of an optometrist is – educating the public about the importance of vision and eye care is indispensible.

Optometrists are frontline vision-care providers. If you are passionate, devoted to serving others and willing to face challenges, you are welcome to us as a gatekeeper of vision!
