Aims and Characteristics

Two full-time programmes are offered under this scheme:

  • BSc (Hons) in Logistics Engineering with Management (BSc LEM); and
  • BSc (Hons) in Enterprise Engineering with Management (BSc EEM).



Programme Aims and Learning Outcomes

Managing logistics is an interesting but complex task. It involves the effective management of materials, information and finance in a network of suppliers, manufacturers, distributors and customers.


This programme aims to produce logistics engineers and professionals who are competent in the design, implementation, control and execution of logistics systems and related technologies, and to develop students' ability to manage complex business, logistics and technology systems for increasingly technology-enabled logistics businesses.


Programme Characteristics

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University possesses a broad array of expertise and talent that spans the whole spectrum of logistics. This programme provides comprehensive training in logistics, in areas ranging from logistics systems, facility design, logistics information systems and supply chain management to operations management. It also provides essential general management and business skills that are needed to manage and run modern logistics companies.


In addition to the academic curriculum, Work-Integrated Education (WIE) is incorporated into the programme to ensure that students gain real-life work experience that is relevant to their studies. This serves to enable students to better understand the relevance of their academic studies and to enhance all-round development.


Summer placement opportunities may be provided to students to enable them to gain practical work experience.


Students also have the opportunity to participate in the Student Exchange Programme with universities in countries such as the United States, Canada, Sweden and Finland for one semester.



Programme Aims and Learning Outcomes

Enterprises are organizations, industrial and commercial, that shape the modern economy. This programme aims at providing a body of knowledge, principles and disciplines that are related to the analysis, design, implementation and operation of the critical elements associated with the effective operation of modern enterprises. To be successful in today's highly competitive global business environment, an enterprise should be willing to undertake new ventures and be able to continuously optimize its operations.


This programme aims to turn out a new generation of professionals with the entrepreneurship skills and the capability of integrating and applying engineering, business management and information technology expertise to optimize the operations of modern information based enterprises and the workflows along the business value chains in which they operate.


Graduates from this course are capable of formulating problems, recognizing the areas in an enterprise in which improvements are necessary, and devising and implementing strategies that are aimed at producing solutions for the enhancement of its business efficiencies and effectiveness. They enable the enterprise to deliver quality goods and services that meet or exceed customer demands in today’s modern business environment.


Programme Characteristics

The Curriculum

The programme curriculum is designed to suit students from Arts, Commerce and Science backgrounds. It provides a unique and integrative discipline of studies that aims at preparing graduates who are competent in Enterprise Engineering, Information Technology and Management. The curriculum also contains subjects such as Entrepreneurship and Innovation and Integrative Studies in Enterprise Systems and Management, which are aimed at equipping students with the principles and hands-on experience needed to develop business plans in starting up new businesses. A competition is held each year in the ISE Department for the best business plan, with industrialists invited to join academic staff members on the judging panel.


Teaching Approach and Support Facilities

Our teaching uses a student-centred and problem-based learning approach, and is conducted with the support of the most advanced facilities in the region, including the PolyU Microsoft Enterprise Systems Centre. The Centre has laboratories in Business Automation, Logistics and Simulation, and Knowledge Solutions.


Work-Integrated Education

In addition to the normal curriculum, Work-Integrated Education (WIE) has been incorporated into the programme. The Department also makes every effort to secure industrial summer training placements for students during their studies. These placements enable students to gain practical work experience.


Student Exchange to Overseas Universities

Students also have the opportunity to participate in the Student Exchange Programme with universities in North America, Europe and Asia, including the Chinese mainland. The usual duration of the exchange is one semester.

Recognition and Prospects


Professional Recognition

The programme has been granted provisional accreditation by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) as a professional engineering degree programme recognized by other Washington Accord signatories.


The Washington Accord is an international agreement between bodies responsible for accrediting engineering degree programmes.  Currently, it has 18 signatories, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, Malaysia and New Zealand.


The programme has been granted accreditation by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport in Hong Kong (CILTHK) since 2009.


Career Prospects

Graduates typically become management trainees, logistics engineers, distribution analysts/officers, logistics analysts, logistics officers in government offices, business executives/analysts, system analysts/designers or young entrepreneurs. Moreover, a wide range of job opportunities suitable for our graduates are available in industry, business, services and the government sector. Most graduates rise up to managerial positions after some years of work experience.



Professional Recognition

The programme is dual accredited by the Chartered Management Institute. Students will automatically receive a second professional qualification upon successful completion of the programme.

Like business and management studies, Enterprise Engineering with Management provides graduates with the generic principles and know-how that can be applied to enterprises and organizations in various sectors. A wide range of job opportunities suitable for our graduates are available in industry, business, services and the government sector. Student Message

Over three years, I explored a great deal of the logistics field and learned about how it works. This programme equipped me with knowledge about managing the process of planning, implementing and controlling efficient and effective logistics workflows, with a view to both saving costs and conforming to customer requirements. To investigate the field in depth, I was required to learn subjects like production logistics and logistics facility design. To respond to the increasingly technology-enabled logistics world, subjects such as mobile technologies for logistics systems were also offered. In all, this programme helped me to develop the ability to manage complex business systems and become more competitive.

Lois Chan

In the BSc(Hons) in Logistics Engineering and Management programme I have acquired management skills such as forecasting techniques and methods in facility design, and learned about the role of niche technologies such as radio frequency identification in streamlining the logistics flow. I have also developed technical skills through using logistics software, which will be very useful in my future career. Another feature of my studies was the time I spent on exchange in Finland to broaden my horizons. This year I joined the summer placement programme to learn about the operations of a company and how to apply theories to a modern logistics business. The BSc(Hons) in Logistics Engineering and Management should be your choice if you want to pursue a career in logistics.

The BSc(Hons) in Enterprise Engineering with Management programme provided me with a diverse study environment in my time at university. It not only equipped me with academic knowledge but encouraged my personal growth. Most importantly, the course cultivated my business-engineering persona and the subjects and projects helped me develop a structured mindset.


In 2015, our group entered the Business Plan Competition, which required us to propose a new business opportunity with a detailed plan. Our group was the first runner up. My FYP was in cooperation with the Hong Kong Fire Services Department, and aimed to develop informative and interactive e-learning courseware for them. This gave me the experience necessary to apply my learned skills to a real-life situation.  I also participated in study tours to Korea and Beijing. I was involved in voluntary service as a student helper on information day and at a large-scale international seminar.


Our rapidly changing environment presents us with new challenges every day. We not only gain in-depth knowledge from books, but I also realized that being a good team player is important, and that we must work flexibly. In my present career in the finance and marketing industry, I am able to work with people from all walks of life and handle different projects. This is similar to what I faced at university – working with people from different backgrounds, managing jobs in an analytically minded manner and being a fast learner.

Chong Shu Fong

The BSc(Hons) in Enterprise Engineering with Management programme has offered me practical experience and numerous opportunities at the university, and has broadened my horizons.


In addition to providing me with comprehensive information related to enterprise engineering and business management, the programme offered me opportunities to participate in different events, including a study tour to Taiwan, an exchange programme in Finland and several competitions such as HKEPC 2017. From these I was able to further consolidate and apply my professional knowledge and skills learnt. Thus, I am able to demonstrate a global outlook and an understanding of enterprise management, which can facilitate my organizational decision-making and problem-solving in the future.


The enriched programme undoubtedly helped me gain advantages in the highly competitive job market. As a management trainee in DHL Global Forwarding (Hong Kong) Limited, I have applied the professional knowledge learnt in the programme, such as project management and strategic management, and this has helped me to deal with various challenges and management issues with confidence. I now know I can always further improve my performance and obtain better outcomes.


Last, I am glad to be a graduate of the programme, as it gave me an all-round education, and the development opportunities allowed me to grow as a professional enterprise engineer.
