Aims and Characteristics

Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes

This programme aims to produce qualified professionals who provide physiotherapy services to promote the health of clients and meet the healthcare needs of society. Graduates possess the knowledge, skills and professional attitudes required for the reliable, ethical and effective practice of physiotherapy. As lifelong learners and active consumers of the professional and scientific literature, graduates are able to fulfil their responsibility for developing the profession through continuing education and/or participating in investigative and evaluative projects. Their sense of social and professional responsibility is further evident in their efforts to educate clients, the public and the next generation of therapists.

Programme Characteristics

The curriculum is forward looking with a strong scientific base. Clinical education and university-based education are integrated, using the latest teaching and learning resources.

Placement Opportunities

The Department aims to train students with global perspectives, and actively encourages students to seize opportunities to experience life overseas. The Department fully supports the principle of student exchange for clinical placements with overseas institutes. There are opportunities for Year 3/4 students to undertake five-week clinical placements at overseas universities. In previous years, placements have been organized at the following universities: the University of Kentucky (US), the University of Illinois at Chicago (US), Curtin University of Technology (Australia), Queens University (Canada), the University of Toronto (Canada), Metropolitan University College (Denmark), Lahti University of Applied Sciences (Finland), National Taiwan University (Taiwan), Haute École de Santé Vaud (HESAV) (Switzerland), University of Kansas Medical Center (USA), Karolinska Institutet (Sweden), Srinakharinwirot University (Thailand) and the University of Alberta (Canada).

Curriculum

This is a four-year full-time programme that involves university-based study and clinical education. The programme comprises four main groups of subjects: basic sciences, professional studies, clinical education and the University Core Curriculum. Clinical education takes the form of clinical placements in hospitals, rehabilitation centres, special schools and institutions for the elderly. Students can also choose to take a Minor programme or free Electives according to their needs, aspirations and abilities. Information on the subjects offered can be obtained at www.rs.polyu.edu.hk.

Student Message

During my first year of study in the Physiotherapy programme at PolyU, I was amazed by the professional attitude of the tutors and the abundance of facilities, which encouraged me to learn actively and enthusiastically. The professors not only impart their professional knowledge, but also nurture students’ ability to communicate with patients and future colleagues, as well as their professionalism as physiotherapists. Perhaps most surprisingly, the programme gave me plenty of opportunities to apply the theories that we were taught in classroom in practice. I found it easy to assimilate into the local students’ circle, as most of them were friendly and willing to offer help. With the aid of peers and tutors, I experienced a delightful freshman year in 2016/17 and my subsequent years at PolyU were even more joyful and enriching.

Studying in the Physiotherapy programme at PolyU has given me the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of rehabilitation. As a non-local student, I am lucky to have local friends whom I can always hang out with in Hong Kong, and experience the amazing culture of the city. The Year 1 courses are extremely interesting and are essential for building up the fundamental concepts before learning more complex skills and techniques for rehabilitation. The professors here are extremely enthusiastic about sharing their extensive knowledge with us, broadening our understanding and views. They encourage us to study with friends, so we can exchange views and inspire each other. This has enabled me to develop critical thinking skills. The many group projects and presentations are both challenging and fascinating, as they give us the opportunity to work with students at different universities and of different nationalities. I have made friends, learned to work in a team efficiently and strengthened my communication skills. To conclude, I feel very comfortable and happy studying at PolyU.

After finishing my second year of the BSc(Hons) in Physiotherapy programme, I am confident that I have made the best choice for my future career. The programme has provided me with the theoretical and practical knowledge I will need to become a competent physiotherapist.

Lectures, seminars and tutorials equip us with the fundamental theories of physiotherapy and train us to properly infer from the information given. This equips us with the fundamental skills to interact with real future patients. When encountering academic difficulties, I always receive great assistance and support from the professors and teaching faculty.

One of the highlights of this programme is clinical education, which gives students the opportunity to connect with patients in the hospital under the guidance of clinical educators. This enables us to put the theories we have learned into practice.

This course has not only strengthened my academic foundation and equipped me with the skills needed in my future career as a physiotherapist, but also enabled me to cultivate the proper attitude while treating patients through guided real-life experiences. For these reasons and more, I have never regretted choosing this course as it has improved my career opportunities. I urge you to apply to join us in 2020!
