Aims and Characteristics

Programme Aims

This programme combines sound scientific principles with engineering applications to help students develop into competent and effective engineering professionals in the areas of integrated circuit design, electronics, telecommunications, computers, embedded systems, and multimedia technologies and programming.

 

Characteristics

This programme emphasises both theory and applications in learning and teaching. The curriculum includes

  • lectures, projects
  • presentations
  • laboratory exercises and various industry placement opportunities.

After completing the fundamental subjects in Years One and Two, students choose their professional development specialism by selecting subjects in four different areas in Years Three and Four. The four areas of specialism are

  • circuits and systems,
  • telecommunication and mobile,
  • information security, and
  • information technology and multimedia.

Students may also engage in overseas exchange scheme and earn recognized credits in a university outside of Hong Kong for one semester during Year Three.

The programme also provides workplace training opportunities for students to gain work experience within and outside Hong Kong through work integrated education (WIE).

Curriculum

Years One and Two: Students study a set of fundamental subjects in electronics, engineering science, programming, information technology, mathematics and communication skills.

Year Three: Students study more advanced and specialized subjects in the areas of telecommunications, computers, data and computer communications, integrated circuits, embedded systems and programming. Students have to complete an integrated project and a multi-disciplinary project over a duration of two semesters.

Year Four: Students can choose from a list of technical elective subjects and complete a final-year design project to strengthen their technical knowledge and skills.

Recognition and Prospects

Professional Recognition

The programme has been granted full accreditation by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE). Graduates of the programme will satisfy the academic requirements for Corporate membership of the HKIE.

Studying at university is like writing a new chapter in your life. It is important that you fill the chapter with meaningful days and prepare for future chapters. The Electronic and Information Engineering programme includes projects that allow you to apply the knowledge you have learned, study tours that broaden your horizons and internship opportunities that give you the chance to develop practical skills. My university chapter comprised valuable experiences and precious moments that have meant so much to me since graduation.

As a new graduate of the Electronic and Information Engineering degree programme, I have gained much useful knowledge, covering areas such as the operating principles of electronic components, data and mobile communication theories and various programming languages. I can now design electronic devices and develop application software.

The programme provides many opportunities for students to engage in group projects, which consolidate the knowledge gained in class. For example, for our Integrated Project we had to construct an automatic robot that could move by tracking a white line and completing assigned tasks.

The EIE Department's excellent facilities include laboratories and computer labs equipped with useful software packages such as MatLab, Visual Studio and Eclipse. The easy and convenient access to these facilities helped us in completing our assignments and projects.
