Aims and Characteristics

Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes

Medical laboratory science is an important scientific discipline in the healthcare sector. Medical laboratory scientists perform laboratory analysis of clinical samples, which aids in disease diagnosis, treatment and risk assessment and the investigation of underlying disease mechanisms.

This programme equips graduates with the knowledge, techniques, reasoning skills and professional attitudes needed to become qualified medical laboratory scientists.

Programme Characteristics

This is the first full-time government-funded undergraduate programme in medical laboratory science in Hong Kong.

The programme curriculum comprises university-based education and medical laboratory science-specific subjects, which are integrated with clinical training. Students undertake clinical attachments in medical laboratories in Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University aims to nurture students’ global perspectives, providing students with opportunities to engage in overseas exchange activities and undertake clinical attachments in overseas hospital laboratories.

Curriculum

This is a four-year full-time programme leading to a registrable qualification required to perform diagnostic tests in clinical laboratories in Hong Kong. Graduates can work in the four major discipline areas of medical laboratory science (cellular pathology, clinical chemistry, haematology and medical microbiology).

The programme has the following main content:

  • Year 1 includes compulsory university subjects such as Freshman Seminars for Health Science and fundamental language subjects, along with Foundation Subjects in medical laboratory science, such as Human Physiology, Human Anatomy, General Chemistry, Laboratory Techniques & Safety and Clinical Laboratory Instrumentation. The core disciplines of medical laboratory science are introduced in the 1-credit subject Exploring Medical Laboratory Science.
  • Year 2 includes more Foundation Subjects in medical laboratory science, such as Immunology, Human Biochemistry, Biostatistics and Pathophysiology. The core medical laboratory science disciplines are further introduced in the 4-credit subject Introduction to Medical Laboratory Science in the first semester. One of the four core disciplines - Clinical Chemistry - is introduced in the second semester.
  • Year 3 focuses on the remaining three core medical laboratory science disciplines: Cellular Pathology, Haematology and Medical Microbiology. The year also covers other core subjects, including Introduction to Clinical Research, Molecular Biology in Medicine and Medical Virology.
  • Year 4 extends to applied subjects such as Human Genetics, Molecular Diagnosis of Human Disease, and Legal and Ethical Issues in Healthcare, and one Elective Subject from a range of other cross-disciplinary health-related subject areas. The core medical laboratory science disciplines are further enhanced through the integrative subject of Current Topics in Laboratory Medicine. There is also a 9-credit laboratory-based research project in the final year.

Students undertake a 12-week clinical attachment during the programme. The first part takes place during the summer period between Years 2 and 3 (three weeks' training in Clinical Chemistry). The second part takes place during the summer period between Years 3 and 4 (nine weeks in total, including three weeks' training in each of Cellular Pathology, Haematology and Medical Microbiology).

In addition to lectures, tutorials, case studies and seminars, this programme provides a substantial number of laboratory-based practical classes.

Information on the subjects offered can be obtained at www.polyu.edu.hk/hti/en/study/programmes/bachelor-degree/bsc-hons-in-medical-laboratory-science-55408.html.

Recognition and Prospects

Professional Recognition

Graduates are eligible for registration (Part II) with the Medical Laboratory Technologists (MLT) Board of Hong Kong. Registration is legally required to practise as a medical laboratory technician/technologist in local medical laboratories.

Graduates are also eligible (i) for Licentiate Membership of the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS, UK), and (ii) to sit the Certificate Examination of the American Society for Clinical Pathology International (MT, ASCPi).

Career Prospects

A wide range of career opportunities are open to graduates of this programme, including careers in medical laboratories in both the public and private sectors (e.g. hospitals and clinics), the medical biotechnology sector and the environmental science, agriculture and food testing industries. Graduates can also choose to pursue academic/research careers through further study at Master or PhD level.

Student Message

By carrying out various laboratory tests of patient samples, such as blood and body fluids, medical laboratory technologists support doctors' efforts to diagnose and treat patients. Hence, medical laboratory technologists play a vital role in the healthcare profession.

The BSc(Hons) in Medical Laboratory Science programme offered by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University is a great stepping stone for those who aim to become medical laboratory technologists in the future. A team of very encouraging elite professors equips students with in-depth knowledge and skills. Apart from lectures and practical classes, the programme gives students placement opportunities in local and overseas hospitals. I feel profoundly grateful to have been part of this family for the last four years. The experiences I have enjoyed and the assistance and encouraging advice I have received from fellow students and teachers have made me into a better person well prepared to overcome the challenges ahead. I am looking forward to making a contribution to society in the future as a qualified medical laboratory technologist.
