Aims and Characteristics

Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes

This challenging programme aims to develop well-rounded and flexible graduates with fundamental knowledge and practical skills in the inter-disciplinary professions of land management, real estate development and construction project management. The programme underpins surveying studies with courses in economics and finance, law, management and technology and cultivates a global mindset through international studies in the real estate and construction markets in the Chinese mainland and overseas.

Students are well prepared to enter the professions of building surveying, general practice surveying (real estate), planning and development, property and facility management and quantity surveying (construction economics), with the full potential to take leading and strategic roles in the profession and business of land, property and construction.

Programme Characteristics

This is a professional degree programme with a global and practical perspective. Students learn about economics, law, finance and investment, management and technology in the construction and real estate context. Problem identification, problem solving and decision making are the focal areas.

There is close contact with the industry through guest lectures and company and site visits. Students undertake group and individual practical projects throughout their studies. We also have a mentorship scheme in which students are matched with employers and senior members of the profession to gain practical insights into professional practice.

We operate a study exchange programme to enable students to study abroad for one academic semester at Loughborough University (UK), the Queensland University of Technology (Australia), the University of Florida (USA) or the Georgia Institute of Technology (USA) .

We also operate Work-Integrated Education in collaboration with the University to help students find placements.

  • This is a broad interdisciplinary course that aims to provide a liberal education for students aspiring to become knowledge workers in the real estate and construction professions in particular.
  • In the first year, students usually begin with General Education subjects to fulfil the University and faculty requirements. They are introduced to basic knowledge and contemporary issues relating to the broad discipline of Construction and Environment.
  • In the second year, students take subjects designed to develop their professional knowledge and problem-solving skills to undertake property development and construction and project management, and to work with the dynamics of the industry. Students study Foundation Subjects in economics, finance and investment, law, management, technology and professional practice.
  • More advanced subjects in the third and fourth years further prepare students to develop their professional competence in the surveying profession.
  • Further Elective Subjects are offered in the fourth year to help students enter one of the surveying specialisms: Building Surveying, General Practice Surveying, Planning and Development, Property and Facility Management, or Quantity Surveying.

Student Message

As a Higher Diploma student promoted to the Bachelor’s degree programme, I am grateful to have had the opportunity to acquire professional knowledge and practical training during my time at BRE. Over three years, I have gained comprehensive knowledge of the legal, economic, managerial and technological aspects of the real estate development and construction field, and practical skills that helped me to tackle various tasks in the workplace during my internship through the Work-Integrated Education programme. I am also very thankful to have been offered invaluable opportunities that have broadened my horizons, such as being an exchange student in Finland and participating in a joint-school summer course in Shanghai. Now that I am a final year surveying student, I am preparing to be a competent graduate. I believe that both the Higher Diploma and undergraduate programmes at BRE are essential for students interested in pursuing professional and practical studies in the challenging construction industry.

Lam Lam

Studying in the Higher Diploma programme in Building Technology and Management and the Bachelor of Science in Surveying programme at PolyU was invaluable to me. I obtained knowledge and practical experience that will help advance my career as a general practice surveyor. For instance, I participated in a summer workshop in which a real construction project was simulated to enable our class to acquire hands-on experience and enhance teamwork. I was also granted the opportunity to join an exchange programme to study at Tongji University in Shanghai for a semester, and the Work-Integrated Education scheme allowed me to work as a summer intern with the Lands Department, obtaining experience in areas such as preparing rent reviews and drafting conditions for lease renewals.

Apart from my studies, I took part in extracurricular activities organized by the dance and film societies. As a sub-committee member of the Social Services Group, I not only had the opportunity to meet new friends and learn from others, but was also able to help those in need.

My university life at BRE was immensely fruitful and the programmes I studied equipped me well with practical knowledge and experience for my future career.

Wong Chu Ho, Jakco

Studying at BRE is a road to success. Three years ago, I was admitted to the Higher Diploma in Building Technology and Management (Surveying), a two-year programme offered by BRE. Thanks to the excellent programme structure and brilliant teaching, I acquired professional knowledge and developed my interest in surveying. BRE emphasises not only students’ academic performance but also their personal development. Study tours and exchange opportunities definitely broaden our horizons. The Department also endeavours to strengthen the bonds between students and the industry, which helps students to gain clearer visions of their future careers. In particular, the Mentoring Programme connects students with mentors and Work-Integrated Education allows us to gain practical work experience in the industry.

Through the promotional path and credit transfer system offered by the Department, I have moved to the BSc(Hons) Surveying (Year Two) programme. I have no regrets about choosing to study Surveying at BRE. Having set a clear goal to become a quantity surveyor, I believe that the skills I have learned at BRE will be helpful for my future professional development.

Wong Wai Ming

Studying for a BSc(Hons) in Surveying at PolyU was great fun and an intellectual challenge. Now, working as part of a professional cost planning team and facing a substantial volume of designs waiting to be translated into various cost plans with tight deadlines, I very much appreciate what the Department of Building and Real Estate (BRE) offered me. Taught by highly experienced and approachable academic staff, at BRE I gained not only a wide range of professional construction knowledge and global and business awareness, but also practical skills such as critical analysis, presentation and communication skills. These skills are equally useful in my work. The Mentorship Scheme also laid a solid foundation for me to build a strong industry network, which has proven invaluable to my career since graduation. The decision to spend my undergraduate years at BRE was the wisest I have ever made.

Lee Yeuk Ying, Krystal

Following graduation, I joined the Swire Group as a Management Trainee seconded to Swire Properties. After a year with Pacific Place retail leasing, my current role in Development and Valuation involves analysing various investment opportunities in land and buildings. My job is challenging and I am grateful that the training I received from BRE equipped me well. Thanks to the BRE Mentorship Scheme, I had the chance to receive professional training from my mentor from Year One. At that time, my mentor organized an in-house training series on useful real estate topics in the property industry. This greatly inspired me, and later I started my own study group with friends and explored property sector performance in equity markets.

Work-Integrated Education at BRE provided a perfect link between unpolished students like us and leading institutions in the industry. I treasure the experience I gained as part of the DTZ valuation team, where my colleague drove me to inspect hundreds of village houses.

BRE is where I learned about my passion and strengths. Various resources available in the library strengthened my technical knowledge and I am particularly thankful to the lecturers and tutors who were helpful in answering my questions. Their effort paved the way for me to succeed in the property industry.

Ma Cheng, Chris

Studying at BRE sharpened my edge in a competitive market. My time at PolyU helped establish a solid foundation for my career and widened my global horizons through the student exchange programme. The knowledge and experience I gained during my three years of study, and the networks I built, will always be helpful to my career.

Mui Kai Yin, Marcus
