Aims and Characteristics

Programme Aims

To produce graduates with strong mathematical and statistical skills and a thorough understanding of their applications in the world of modern investment and finance analytics. The programme develops students’ abilities in quantitative analysis, data analytics, critical thinking and communication skills, which enables them to develop an outlook and a methodology that are valuable in pursuing careers in business- and finance-related fields.



This programme focuses on the study of modern data analytics needed in the finance industry. Its curriculum covers areas such as big data analytics, business intelligence and customer relationship management, machine learning, algorithmic trading and artificial intelligence. This strengthens students’ data interpretation and analytical skills and supports them in developing careers in the evolving investment and finance industries.


Year One: Students study the General University Requirement (GUR) subjects, common science subjects and foundation mathematics and statistics.

Year Two: Students study Compulsory Subjects in mathematics, statistics and finance.

Years Three and Four: Students study advanced subjects in investment science, finance analytics and computer science, including Elective Subjects.

In the fourth year of study, students complete a Capstone Project in which they tackle a problem or research topic in investment science/applied mathematics/statistics, consolidating the discipline-specific knowledge, concepts and generic skills developed through different stages of the programme.

Career Prospects

The programme is designed to develop students’ skills in quantitative analysis, data analysis, critical thinking and communication, which enable them to pursue careers in business- and finance-related fields such as data analytics, risk management or financial product development and pricing.

In addition to finance-related fields, our programme supports graduates' pursuit of careers in information technology, scientific research, education, marketing and consultancy. Many of our graduates have found jobs in prestigious financial institutions and renowned corporations across the Asia Pacific region.


Professional Recognition

Upon completing the programme, graduates are expected to receive partial exemption from the professional assessment of:

  • the Hong Kong Securities and Investment Institute
  • the Hong Kong Statistical Society (subject to confirmation)
  • the Royal Statistical Society of the UK (subject to confirmation)

During my undergraduate study, I had the life-changing opportunity to undertake a 3-month research internship at the University of Oldenburg, Germany. This kind of research internship is uncommon in Hong Kong, so I’m especially thankful to have had this opportunity. It was a valuable and practical experience for me. My work in the research group was highly relevant to my undergraduate study. The programming and mathematical knowledge that I have gained at PolyU has greatly helped me to construct functions and transform them into programming models. Through my internship in Germany, I gained practical knowledge and skills that are extremely important to my study and future career development. Most importantly, an unexpected finding of my work gave me the chance to publish a scientific paper! My internship experience enhanced my interest in scientific research and totally changed my perception of research work. It also inspired me to pursue further study in Germany. If you like mathematics and want to develop your career in this field, PolyU’s Investment Science programme is tailor-made for you!          

Steven Tang

Integrating mathematics- and finance-related knowledge, the Investment Science programme helped me to develop not only theoretical knowledge and a quantitative skillset, but also practical and interpersonal skills. As a science student, I learned far more than simply how to solve equations. Through participating in group projects and presentations, I was inspired to come up with creative mathematics-/finance-related ideas that were really interesting and exciting. Besides, we were encouraged to explore different statistical tools and software packages, such as SAS, SPSS, R and Minitab. Today, all of these tools and technologies are very useful in my daily work of validating prices of different bonds and equities. At PolyU, I was also trained in statistical inference from the analysis of big data. This programme equipped me to pursue a career in the banking industry.

Jenna Ho

PolyU has provided a good platform for me to enrich myself and develop my potential. By studying Investment Science and joining extra-curricular workshops, I have not only obtained comprehensive knowledge of statistics, mathematics and finance, but also strengthened my technical skills, such as programming. In addition, I have had plenty of opportunities to join academic contests such as the Mathematical Contest in Modeling, which have further enhanced my research ability and broadened my horizons. My service-learning in summer 2015 concerning ecotourism in rural and developing regions showed me the importance of serving the community using the knowledge I had gained. One year later, I participated in an internship programme organised by PolyU in Shanghai, which gave me initial exposure to financial technology. In summer 2017, I successfully completed a technical exchange programme in Germany, which gave me valuable project experience regarding data mining and machine learning. Thanks to PolyU and the Department of Applied Mathematics, I have explored many possibilities, which will benefit my future career development.

With my passion for business and mathematics, studying Investment Science was an inevitable choice for me. This programme helped me build a good foundation in mathematics, statistics and finance. To prepare students for the world of work, the Department holds workshops on different kinds of statistical software, such as SAS and SPSS. It also offers students many great internship opportunities. During my studies at AMA, I received training in the Census and Statistics Department and at Kwong Wah Hospital as a research assistant. This experience enhanced my skills in interpreting data, performing concise analysis and giving constructive suggestions to my seniors. Thanks to professors’ and instructors’ generous assistance and support to alleviate my worries over academic studies and future career path, I become more enthusiastic about statistics. Afterwards, I completed a Master's degree in Statistics and Finance in the UK. I am truly honored and grateful to have received a distinction. I am now working in the investment department of Chinese Estates Holdings Limited. I am mainly responsible for integrating and analysing different kinds of financial data; recording CEOs' and companies' security and bond trading and reporting to the Board of Directors. AMA gave me valuable, career-enhancing knowledge and practical skills, ensuring my smooth adaption to the fast-paced and stressful job environment of the financial industry. Enrolling in the Investment Science programme is definitely a stepping-stone to success!

The Department of Applied Mathematics has given me a special university experience. In the third year of my undergraduate studies, I participated in a student exchange programme and spent a semester studying at Yonsei University in South Korea. During this period, I made friends with different cultural backgrounds. Overall, I have had many opportunities to exchange ideas and broaden my perspective on various global issues with international students. Studying BSc(Hons) in Investment Science at PolyU was a great choice for me. This programme not only equipped me with mathematical, financial and statistical skills, but also enhanced my logical thinking, problem solving and communication skills. I am a graduate of the BSc(Hons) in Investment Science programme. I am thankful for having met inspirational lecturers and supportive tutors during my studies. Through discussion of relevant topics, such as regression modelling and probabilistic modelling, I gained a deeper understanding of how to apply these concepts and theories in my daily life. To understand recent developments in different economic and financial systems, I took up an internship at ICBC in Shanghai in my second year of study. The internship further widened my horizons as an investment science student. In sum, I gained far more statistical knowledge from this programme than I had expected. Back when I planned my programme choices, I first prioritised areas of interest for my undergraduate study. I had long been interested in statistics and mathematics, and wanted to study related disciplines for my degree. I also wanted to apply knowledge and skills acquired at the university to my future career. With these criteria in mind, I knew that the BSc(Hons) in Investment Science offered by the Department of Applied Mathematics of PolyU would be the perfect choice. At first, I mainly studied the basic theories of mathematics, statistics and finance. Later, I learned how to apply my knowledge in the real world in the investment and finance industries. Being well equipped with knowledge and having received various training during my course, I obtained many internship opportunities in the finance, statistics and market research industries during my studies. Through my internships, I met people from different industries, which helped broaden my horizons. They also cultivated my analytical, organisational and communication skills. This programme has well prepared me for a wonderful future.
