Aims and Characteristics

Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes

This programme aims to make full use of the hugely versatile applications in the in-demand disciplines of electrical engineering and civil engineering to broaden the career opportunities for our graduates. Students are expected to acquire a solid understanding of the fundamentals of electrical engineering and civil engineering, and apply the knowledge gained and techniques learned to the relevant areas in transportation systems.


The programme philosophy focuses on the incorporation of up-to-date engineering knowledge into transportation systems to enhance the efficiency, reliability, safety and maintainability of infrastructure and services. Current practices in transportation, the latest technologies in transportation systems and their integration in the provision of engineering solutions for practical problems form the core of the programme.

This programme is unique in Hong Kong, providing students with interdisciplinary knowledge and perspectives with a direct career path into the high growth transportation industry and related sectors.

The programme has been granted provisional accreditation by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE).


Career Prospects

Graduates are expected to receive attractive offers from various government departments, public and private transportation service providers, civil, electrical and transportation engineering consultancies, and construction companies. They are well equipped to work in Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland and overseas.


  • The first year introduces the concepts of engineering, other general studies and language subjects for our students.
  • The second year focuses on the fundamentals of engineering in general, and introduces students to accounting and economics.
  • In the third year of study, essential knowledge of transportation systems, such as system analysis, planning, and technical subjects from various engineering disciplines, is covered.
  • During their final year, students take 4 Core subjects in transportation systems and two Elective subjects on advanced or specialised topics of transportation. Students may choose individual projects which are relevant to transportation systems engineering.

Student Message

I have been enthusiastic about public transportation since I was young so I chose Transportation Systems Engineering as the Major of my undergraduate study. The curriculum of this 4-year programme covers railway and highway system infrastructure, and planning transportation systems, among other things.


Apart from attending lectures, we also undertook practical training at the Industrial Centre during summer after the second year of our study. Simulating working environments and problem-based practical exercises were provided, which gave us the opportunity to apply the knowledge and techniques we learnt during lectures, and provided hands-on experience in practical work related to transportation engineering.


The Department also offers study tours and exchange programmes to students. I participated in a study tour to South West Jiaotong University and learnt about high-speed railway development in China.


The Department has excellent facilities and provides exciting opportunities for undergraduate students to be proficient in their future careers in transportation or related fields. It has helped me take a big step forward towards my dream career.

I was admitted to the Transportation Systems Engineering programme three years ago, and it has changed my life. The Department encourages students to gain insight from an international perspective. Therefore, I participated in an international summer programme in China and undertook an internship in Australia. Yet, such a comprehensive, structured programme not only focuses on the field of transportation but also outlines some basic principles of electricity, which qualified me as a volunteer for setting up solar systems for villagers in Africa.


The Faculty of Engineering also encourages students to join international academic activities. I joined an exchange programme and studied in Europe for one semester. There is no doubt that this was the best way to develop international friendships and it really enriched my life experience.

The BEng(Hons) in Transportation Systems Engineering programme is certainly one of the best choices for those who want to devote themselves to careers in the high-growth transportation sector. It is equipping me with comprehensive and up-to-date skills in the areas of electrical engineering, transportation, civil engineering, electronics, engineering economics and management, to name only a few. It also offers great placement opportunities that allow students to experience real-life work environments in the industry. All teaching staff in the Department possess professional skills and care for the all-round development of their students.


I have built a powerful network since beginning my studies through meeting students from different disciplines such as mechanical, industrial systems and electronic engineering, and computing, when attending service-learning classes and the Freshmen Seminar.
