Admission to BEng(Hons) in Mechanical Engineering or BEng(Hons) in Product Analysis and Engineering Design

  • Students who want to study in either the BEng(Hons) in Mechanical Engineering programme or the BEng(Hons) in Product Analysis and Engineering Design should apply for admission to the BEng(Hons) Scheme in Mechanical Engineering.

 

Deferred Choice between BEng(Hons) in Mechanical Engineering and BEng(Hons) in Product Analysis and Engineering Design

  • Students who are admitted to the scheme study together during the first two years and then complete their preferred programme normally within the next two years until their graduation. With this arrangement, students are able to make their choice of study after they have obtained a better understanding of the programmes during the first two years.

Aims and Characteristics

The Department of Mechanical Engineering has merged two undergraduate programmes, BEng(Hons) in Mechanical Engineering and BEng(Hons) in Product Analysis and Engineering Design into the BEng(Hons) Scheme in Mechanical Engineering. Students admitted into the scheme will study together during the first two years and then complete their preferred programme (one of the above two programmes) normally within two years. Under this arrangement, students are able to make their choice of study after they have obtained a better understanding of the programmes. There is no quota restriction on students’ choice between the BEng(Hons) in Mechanical Engineering and BEng(Hons) in Product Analysis and Engineering Design.

Programme Aims and Learning Outcomes

We aim to educate professional mechanical engineers who are able to apply up-to-date technology to solve and manage multidisciplinary engineering problems for various engineering/business sectors.

 

Upon completion of study, graduates of the programme are expected to:

  • Have learned to apply scientific principles, carry out engineering analysis and design to solve challenging problems that are typical in mechanical engineering;
  • Be able to use computers as tools to solve engineering problems;
  • Develop the ability to formulate technical problems mathematically and analyse engineering systems;
  • Be equipped with the ability to properly select the most suitable materials and methods that are safe, environmentally and aesthetically acceptable, and economically competitive for systems/products and their design and manufacture;
  • Build up the skills needed to think innovatively and creatively, to communicate effectively both in oral and written forms; and
  • Appreciate the ethical and societal responsibilities of engineers, the importance of lifelong learning, concepts of continuous quality improvement and the continued effect of the globalisation of the design, manufacturing and marketing of technical goods and services.

 

Programme Characteristics

After providing our students with a broad and solid foundation in areas including physics, mathematics, computing, engineering sciences, design and manufacture, they are educated to apply these knowledge and skills to certain disciplines:

  • Aerospace Engineering;
  • Design and Automation; or
  • Environmental and Energy Engineering.

 

BEng(Hons) in Product Analysis and Engineering Design

Programme Aims and Learning Outcomes

This unique interdisciplinary programme aims to enable students to synthesise technology, design and business in the development of high value-added products. It provides graduates with the fundamental knowledge, skills, techniques and global insight needed to develop creative and innovative products that are competitively priced, meet international standards of quality, and can be successfully marketed.  Graduates become product design engineers, project engineers or engineering designers. They are expected to play important roles in switching Hong Kong's industry from comprising original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to original brand manufacturers (OBMs).

 

Upon completion of study, graduates of the programme are expected to:

  • Have the ability to perform product design and development by considering market needs, technology and business constraints;
  • Have the ability to apply scientific, mathematical, engineering and arts knowledge to analyse design problems; and
  • Have the ability to manage product design and development projects.

 

Programme Characteristics

The programme provides comprehensive education and training in design and analysis of successful new products from which graduates are able to synthesise product design, technologies and business to produce successful new products that satisfy market needs.

 

Adopting the learning outcome-oriented, integrative and interest-based teaching and learning approaches, the programme helps students to develop their knowledge in product design and development, marketing and their communication, teamwork, management and self-learning skills. Graduates are able to play leading roles in industries by virtue of their well-balanced education and practical training in product design and development.

 

For both programmes:

  • We use the learning outcome-oriented teaching approach;
  • Students are required to complete Industrial Training and Work Integrated Education; and
  • Students can also opt for summer placements in companies abroad, or in industry in Hong Kong or the Chinese mainland.

Professional Recognition

Both programmes have been granted provisional accreditation by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) in the relevant disciplines.

 

Career Prospects

BEng(Hons) in Mechanical Engineering

Because of their broad and solid knowledge in engineering and the sciences, and their ability to apply their knowledge and skills to tackle complicated multidisciplinary engineering problems, our graduates are able to start their careers as mechanical engineers, design engineers, manufacturing and process engineers, service engineers, consultant engineers or project engineers. They can find excellent employment opportunities in the aviation and aeronautical engineering industries, public utility companies, the building services sector, engineering consultancy firms, the construction industry, the environmental, electronic and manufacturing industries, the information technology sector, government departments and educational institutions.

 

BEng(Hons) in Product Analysis and Engineering Design

Graduates of the BEng PAED have excellent opportunities to start their careers in the product design and development, engineering consultancy, environmental engineering and manufacturing sectors. Because of their ability to integrate engineering with product design and their experience in performing design projects, our graduates are competent to work as design engineers or project coordinators. The programme provides graduates with very good foundations in mechanical engineering and it applications, and product and system design. Thus, our graduates are able to start their careers as mechanical engineers.

 

In addition to serving the community and industry as engineers, developing their own businesses is also a possible career for our graduates.  Making use of their knowledge in business, marketing and product innovation, some graduates start their own businesses in the design and development of new products.

Curriculum

The first year of the scheme adopts the common first year curriculum used by most programmes in the Engineering Faculty. It includes fundamentals in physics, mathematics and information-technology. In addition, enhancements in languages and General Education are also provided.

 

The scheme curriculum in the second year is common for both programmes. In addition to fundamentals in materials engineering, engineering mechanics, electricity and electronics, computing, and engineering design, enhancements in mathematics, languages and general education are provided. In addition to studying the same academic subjects, students will undertake the same industrial training programmes during the first two years.

 

BEng(Hons) in Mechanical Engineering

The third and fourth years provide core knowledge in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, materials, design and manufacture, dynamics and control and advanced mathematics, and in-depth studies in communication and mechanical engineering disciplines. Students can choose Elective Subjects in the following technical streams:

  • Aerospace Engineering;
  • Design and Automation; and
  • Environmental and Energy Engineering.

 

In the fourth year, students are required to complete a final year Capstone Project.

 

BEng(Hons) in Product Analysis and Engineering Design

The third and fourth years provide core knowledge in thermo-fluid mechanics, dynamics and control, mechatronics, materials and design, industrial and engineering design, and in-depth studies in communication and design techniques.

 

In the fourth year, students are required to complete the final year Capstone Design Project, which may involve industrial sponsorship and production of prototype.

Have you ever thought about how faucets bring you water or how air conditioners generate cool or warm air? Without adequate knowledge, how can we design and build different facilities and equipment?

 

Welcome to the PolyU Department of Mechanical Engineering. During my studies over the past few years, I have had the same goal as other schoolmates – to strive for a higher GPA. Yes! This is an effective way to show how well you have learnt and how well prepared you are for your future. I have interpreted GPA as “Gathered, Patient and Aggressive”.

 

Gathered

Some people prefer working alone because they may feel that others could obstruct their learning progress. However, I believe your schoolmates can be your support and motivation to keep you moving forward. Through discussions and cooperation, you will discover the fun of studying with your peers and develop a deeper understanding of the programme.

 

Patient

As a university student, you delve into different concepts and explore as much as you can. Do not feel disappointed when you encounter problems. Instead, I encourage you to patiently focus on the things you have never before come across. Believe it or not, eventually you will solve the problems, and you will be able to grasp the main concepts and expand your knowledge.

 

Aggressive

Instructors and teachers are your learning partners. Be an aggressive student! Ask your instructors whenever questions come into your mind. They are always happy to guide you in the right direction.

 

You will be proud of yourself once you are equipped with the professional skills and knowledge of your university studies.

Mechanical Engineer, ASM Technology Hong Kong Limited

 

The PolyU BEng (Hons) in Product Analysis and Engineering Design programme has equipped me well for my career development in design engineering. The programme focuses not only on engineering basics and theories, but also on the practical skills for decision-making and problem-solving in all stages of product development and design engineering projects.

 

I joined ASM Technology Hong Kong Limited after graduation as a mechanical engineer.  Currently, my job involves the engineering design of semiconductor processing equipment. The BEng (Hons) in Product Analysis and Engineering Design programme has provided me with engineering knowledge from different fields, and the skills to integrate real projects. What I have learnt closely matches the current needs of my job. The programme offers courses on mechatronics, mechanics of materials, design for manufacturing, etc., which are all important for me in handling engineering design and coaches me for future career development.

 

The Department of Mechanical Engineering has also provided me with many opportunities to gain hands-on experience in engineering projects. The projects cover different product development stages, including market research, engineering design and analysis, and prototype making. The practical experience I have attained during my undergraduate study enables me to be a quick learner in my current position and to apply my technical knowledge effectively.

 

The PolyU BEng (Hons) in Product Analysis and Engineering Design programme has shown me the path to a bright professional future. I am glad to have taken up this life-changing experience.
