Aims and Characteristics

Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes

The programme aims to train senior technicians for the building engineering and construction management professions. Students are also equipped with the necessary foundation knowledge to pursue further professional education in building engineering and construction management.

Programme Characteristics

The programme has been designed to equip students with the technical skills and knowledge in the construction and real estate industry at paraprofessional level. To cater for the latest development in the industry, elements on Building Information Modelling (BIM) have been emphasised, and incorporated into a number of subjects and project work to prepare our graduates to take the lead in the professional and business environment of the construction and real estate industry. The programme also includes academic elements that foster students’ abilities to pursue further study and lifelong learning after graduation.

Recognition and Prospects

Professional Recognition

The programme is accredited and recognised by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) as meeting the academic requirements as Associate Memberships subject to recognised related working experience and passing the assessment interview hosted by the HKIE.

Career Prospects

Numerous job opportunities are available in the building engineering profession. Graduates typically seek employment related to building engineering, construction and project management, quantity surveying, building surveying or property management. Graduates awarded a “Credit” or above classification may be admitted to relevant undergraduate programmes (top-up programme).

Curriculum

Curriculum

Year One: Students will take a number of General University Requirement (GUR) subjects including languages and general education. Subjects related to core professional knowledge will be included in the curriculum in Semester 2. Subjects on safety workshop practice, construction drawing preparation and information management are included.

Year Two: The curriculum includes subjects that encompass the core skills for paraprofessionals in building engineering and management practices, including construction and maintenance technology, building services, site surveying, project supervision and contract administration. Students are also required to complete a final year project, requiring them to integrate knowledge from different fields of study. BIM applications are emphasised in the final year project.

Between Years One and Two, students are required to complete a “3 training-credit” summer training programme, organised in association with the Industrial Centre (IC) of the University. This is comprised of elements on engineering design, drawing preparing (with BIM), cost planning and control, and project management and execution.

Student Message

During my two years of study at BRE I gained precious knowledge about building technologies, management and economics, which will help me to face future challenges. The HD in Building Technology and Management (Engineering) programme aims not only to introduce students to numerous theories but also to emphasise practice and help students develop a solid foundation in construction by providing industrial training. In addition, the programme’s curriculum is frequently reviewed by professors who have close connections with the construction industry.

The Department expends many teaching resources on its students, and the academic staff are willing to offer continuous support whenever difficulties are encountered.  Their guidance enhanced my critical thinking and enriched my understanding of the industry. I strongly believe that it is a wise decision to study at BRE.
