Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes

This programme aims to produce qualified professionals who provide physiotherapy services to promote the health of clients and meet the healthcare needs of society. Graduates possess the knowledge, skills and professional attitudes required for the reliable, ethical and effective practice of physiotherapy. As lifelong learners and active consumers of the professional and scientific literature, graduates are able to develop the profession through continuing education and/or participating in investigative and evaluative projects. Their sense of social and professional responsibility is further reflected in their efforts to educate clients, the public and the next generation of therapists.

 

Programme Characteristics

The curriculum is forward looking with a strong scientific base. Clinical- and university-based education are integrated, using the latest teaching and learning resources.

 

Placement Opportunities

The Department aims to train students with global perspectives, and actively encourages students to seize opportunities to experience life overseas. The Department fully supports the principle of student exchange for clinical placements with overseas institutes. There are opportunities for Year Three/Four students to undertake five-week clinical placements at overseas universities. In previous years, placements have been organised at the following universities: the University of Kentucky (USA), the University of Illinois in Chicago (USA), Curtin University of Technology (Australia), Queens University (Canada), the University of Toronto (Canada), Metropolitan University College (Denmark), Lahti University of Applied Sciences (Finland), National Taiwan University (Taiwan), Haute École de Santé Vaud (HESAV) (Switzerland), University of Kansas Medical Center (USA), Karolinska Institutet (Sweden), Srinakharinwirot University (Thailand) and the University of Alberta (Canada).

Graduates are eligible to register with the Physiotherapists Board of Hong Kong.

 

Career Prospects

Our graduates have a high rate of employment, with a wide range of options - from acute care hospitals, special schools and homes for the elderly to community settings and private practice.

 

Physiotherapists can specialise, take up managerial positions or be involved in clinical education and research. Opportunities for higher degree studies such as in MSc, MPhil or PhD programmes are also available.

 

Graduates fulfil the normal entry requirements for the position of Physiotherapist II for the Hospital Authority, private organisations (private hospitals, private clinics, nursing homes and homes for the elderly), the Department of Health, the Education Bureau (special schools, early education and training centres), subvented non-government organisations and the Social Welfare Department (community centres, sheltered workshops and special childcare centres).

Curriculum

This is a four-year full-time programme that involves university-based study and clinical education. The programme is comprised of four main groups of subjects: basic sciences, professional studies, clinical education and the University Core Curriculum. Clinical education is provided in the form of clinical placements at hospitals, rehabilitation centres, special schools and institutions for the elderly. Students can also choose to take a Minor programme or free Electives according to their needs, aspirations and abilities.  Information on the subjects offered can be obtained at www.rs.polyu.edu.hk.

There is no compulsory subject requirement. Preferred subject(s) with the highest weighting for admission score calculation include(s):

  • Chinese Language

Other Information

  • Preference is given to applicants who are able to communicate effectively in Chinese (i.e. spoken Cantonese) and English.
  • Applicants with good results in science subjects (Biology and/or Physics) are preferred.
  • Applicants should be fit within the normal range in fulfiling the physical requirements of physiotherapy practice.

Student Message


It is my privilege to study in the Physiotherapy Department at PolyU. During my first year at university, I was granted the chance to work at two of the busiest acute hospitals in Hong Kong. This hands-on experience in a healthcare setting so early in the course was all I could have asked for.  

 

PolyU values its students as much as a mother values her own child. Not only does PolyU support students from all backgrounds, but it also treasures its students’ non-academic talents. I joined PolyU through the Outstanding Sportsmen Recommendation Scheme. I am and will always be grateful to be a part of the PolyU sports team and I am proud to represent PolyU in tertiary championships.

 

My university life experience has been more fruitful than I ever expected – meeting and learning with inter-professional students, not to mention befriending international students who share their cultures with us. This past year at PolyU was unforgettable. My remaining years on this beautiful campus are certain to be remarkable as well as life-changing.


Kwok Cho Yiu, Jessica



My experience at PolyU has exceeded my expectations. PolyU is a time-honoured institution, nurturing competent physiotherapists. Apart from acquiring knowledge through textbooks and research, students have plenty of exposure to the real-life workings of their industry. For example, attachments for Year 4 students and bedside teaching and placements give students valuable insights and enable them to hone their practical skills. Last summer, I had my first placements at two local hospitals, where I gained much hands-on experience and improved my clinical reasoning skills. Then, by bringing these experiences back into the classroom, I found I had a better understanding of my future profession, which  enhanced my attitude to learning.

 

I have also developed personally through the opportunities afforded by PolyU. Over the last two years, I have made friends from all over the world by taking part in schemes that put me in close contact with exchange students, such as the Peer Mentor programme, BBQs and fairs, and the International Summer School. My encounters in advisory roles have enriched my university life.


Lam Chi Hao, Leo



After finishing my sophomore year in physiotherapy, I am certain that I have chosen the best programme for developing my career. During my first two years of study, I experienced how this four-year programme of BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy can cultivate competent physiotherapists, both intellectually and practically.

 

Intellectually, the lectures, seminars and tutorials serve to equip students with a theoretical understanding of physiotherapy, and students are required to form robust logical inferences based on the information provided. They can always clarify any doubts by consulting members of the faculty, and from this gain broad clinical knowledge under professional guidance.

 

Practically, the teaching laboratories and clinical experiences are the highlights of the programme. Students are granted access to clinical patients under the supervision of Senior Physiotherapists and are closely involved in their rehabilitation, thus experiencing scenarios that are as close to real life as possible. This clinical involvement enabled us to apply theories to practice and also illustrated how rehabilitation professionals can help patients holistically.

 

The combination of theoretical learning and clinical application will equip us with clinical competence and appropriate attitudes when serving patients. I have made a wise decision in taking JS 3636, so please join us in 2019!


Leung Chun Him, Dominic



The BSc(Hons) in Physiotherapy at PolyU has provided me with an extremely supportive environment in which to study anatomy, diagnosis and treatment modalities relevant to the rehabilitation field and becoming a compentent physiotherapist. The Department's genuine commitment to high-quality healthcare education has played an integral role in my progression towards becoming a real physiotherapist.

 

The professors and faculty involved in this programme come from highly diverse professional backgrounds, enabling them to share their real-life experiences during lectures as well as incorporating real-world cases into the curriculum. There is no doubt that studying physiotherapy is very challenging and demands full dedication, but I truly enjoy every bit of the struggle and stress.

 

One of the most memorable and enjoyable parts of this programme for me is the practical curriculum. The course JS 3636 integrates in-class lectures with practical learning through field visits and clinical placements, where real-life situations are demonstrated to provide students withhands-on training. This is a comprehensive programme that can equip you with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. If you are interested in the rehabilitation field, this is the right place for you!


Mannix Anderson Lam



If a student takes four years to evolve into a physiotherapist, teachers are the indispensable catalysts in this transformation. Physiotherapy is a science that not only includes theories and research, but also involves practical skills. Our teachers help us to learn practical skills through physical demonstration and verbal guidance. They possess both theoretical and practical experience. Their unceasing willingness to help and generosity guide us to develop a sense of responsibility and commitment to serving the community.

 

Although the course schedule is tight and the learning process is sometimes difficult, I will never forget the rapport and support from my teachers and classmates. They all walk with us during our journey. I will always remember a familiar phrase that both teachers and students say in class - ‘Harder! Harder! Harder!’
