Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes

This programme aims to produce graduates with the professional knowledge and skills needed by a professional technologist in the field of electronic and information engineering. Graduates of the programme are ready to either advance to a higher level of study or pursue careers in relevant fields.

  • Object-oriented Design and Programming
  • Data and Computer Communications
  • Microcontroller Systems and Interface

 

Programme Characteristics

Students gain a solid foundation in computer programming, data communications, database systems and electronic circuit analysis.

 

Graduates may be considered for admission to degree programmes in Hong Kong, including programmes offered by the Department, with credit transfers.

Career Prospects

The curriculum is designed to train technologists to meet the needs of the electronic and information engineering industry in both the manufacturing and service sectors. The local manufacturing industry requires incorporated engineers in the areas of design, research and development, testing and quality control. The industry's service sector mainly consists of service providers in the field of telecommunications and in the sales of electronic and information products such as computers and electronic equipment. These service providers require trained technical personnel for maintenance, customer service, field applications, technical support and marketing.

  • Year One: covers Foundation Subjects in electronic and information engineering and general subjects, including Mathematics, Physics and English.
  • Year Two: students receive more training in the core technical subjects. They can specialise in certain areas of study by choosing from Elective Subjects.

During my two years of study in the Higher Diploma in Electronic and Information Engineering programme, I completed many practical projects in addition to gaining knowledge and learning theories. I also had the chance to attend laboratory sessions, receive Industrial Centre training and conduct an integrated project. As part of a group, I was involved in scheduling, budgeting, designing and producing listening aids. After finishing the project, our supervisor allowed us to borrow professional acoustic measuring equipment to test the aids. This practical experience will be of great help for my future career. University life provides invaluable learning and practical experiences that will prepare you to face the many challenges in life after graduation.

Studying in the PolyU Higher Diploma in Electronic and Information Engineering (EIE) programme feels similar to being a degree student. For instance, we can join societies as members or committee members, and we are eligible for almost any scholarship and overseas study opportunities provided by the EIE Department and PolyU. During Year 1 of my study, I went to Japan for a study tour with 19 other EIE students for 7 days. Interacting with the locals was a valuable experience, and it was funded completely by the Department, which was a big factor at that time, as I would not have been able to afford it myself. The subjects we study are also similar to those studied by degree students; they are informative and challenging at the same time. I learned a lot of techniques and theories in PolyU's various labs and during the lectures offered by the EIE Department.
