  • Students admitted into the Scheme study a common curriculum for the first year.

  • Admission to programme 4 is on a competitive basis. Students are subject to further assessment, i.e. students’ own choice and the overall GPA of Year 1.

  • To recognise the outstanding academic performance of HKDSE students, the Department will grant entry scholarship to eligible HKDSE students admitted to the programmes via JUPAS. BEng (Hons) Scheme in Civil Engineering and Sustainable Development

This brand new BEng (Hons) Scheme in Civil Engineering and Sustainable Development is designed to provide students with a high-quality interdisciplinary education in the areas of civil engineering, structural and fire safety engineering, and environmental engineering. Students have a unique opportunity to study a common curriculum for the first year so that they know how to select their major (out of four programmes) at the end of Year 1. The programmes will bring interesting and practical learning experiences to students, and offer them a range of highly in-demand skills for career development.   Graduates are eligible to join Scheme A training of The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers in the Civil, Structural, Geotechnical, Fire, Environmental and Logistics & Transportation Engineering disciplines.  

 

BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering

This professional programme is designed to provide students with a broad-based and high-quality interdisciplinary education in the areas of environmental, geotechnical, hydraulic, structural and transportation engineering as well as construction management. It aims to nurture well-rounded civil engineering graduates who are ready to work on projects with complex commercial, social, legal and political components.

This programme aims at educating students to be competent engineers who can design, maintain and retrofit both new and existing buildings, by providing technical knowledge of structural engineering and both active and passive fire protection technologies.

This programme is the first of its kind offered by Hong Kong institutions; it emphasises environmental engineering, sustainable development, and occupational safety and health.

 

In addition to environmental engineering, this programme covers water and waste management, circular economics, energy sustainability, and urban development. Graduates of this programme will be able to devise practical solutions to environmental and safety problems and contribute to policy formulation that will lead to sustainable development.

  • Comprehensive civil engineering subjects are taught in the third and the fourth years, covering practical knowledge of environmental, geotechnical, hydraulic, structural and transportation engineering.
  • In the final year, students are required to work on an Individual Project and a Design Project.  Students are also allowed to choose elective subjects based on their interests.

 

BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering (Structural and Fire Safety Engineering)

  • The comprehensive core subjects of structural and fire disciplines are taught throughout the programme.
  • In the final year, students are required to work on an Individual Project and a Design Project.

  • For students who have successfully withdrawn from the Secondary Major, the student's major will be changed to BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering. The graduation may be delayed.

It seems like yesterday when I first stepped onto this campus and wandered around admiring the buildings paved with their signature red bricks. Cliché as it may sound, I was deeply fascinated by the charisma of civil engineering, which magically shapes the world with blooming infrastructure, from skyscrapers piercing the clouds to tunnels creeping underground. I was so blessed to receive numerous opportunities to explore my interests and uncover my potential. The chance to study in the UK for one semester was invaluable. I appreciated its unique indigenous history, humanity and constructions. Also, I learnt from well-established figures in the construction sector through the mentorship programme and came to realize the essential attributes of a leader and the significance of possessing these qualities. These experiences broadened my horizons and ignited my passion for geotechnical engineering, in particular the dynamics of soil behaviours and their substantial contribution to daily life.

 

I celebrated my graduation in 2020 and embarked on a new journey in GEO. Since then, I had been rotated to different sections, from the Planning Division to the Standard & Testing Division. Currently, I am working on a site as an assistant residential engineer. I am beyond grateful for the opportunities and unfailing support of PolyU in the preceding years. I hope to continue supporting this community with my professionalism and passing on the spirit of our alma mater - “to learn and to apply, for the benefit of mankind”, as we secure public safety and promote quality of life.


Ip Ching Tung



In my third year of study, I was given a chance to be an exchange student at Imperial College London, one of our prestigious counterparts in the UK. It was definitely one of the most fascinating and fruitful experiences of my life.

 

Life in London differs in many ways from that in Hong Kong, and I started afresh over there with no friends and family around. So, the first two things I learned were to be independent and to be quick to adapt. I also acquired a global mindset. I was in a class of around 90 students from 22 countries and my interactions with them were striking. When I talked with them, I learned about different cultures and got to know the state of the construction industry in different countries, which made me realise that there are so many opportunities worldwide.

 

I ended my journey there with a week working on a construction project. It was a group project that started with design and engineering drawings before we went on site and ended with us actually building the structure ourselves. It enhanced my practical knowledge of civil engineering.

 

That was my exchange experience. I hope you have such an opportunity during your studies, and I am sure it will be an experience you will enjoy.

Four years ago, I stepped onto this campus as an immature and insecure freshman. Right now, I am ready to enter society confidently as a civil engineer with a dream and a detailed life plan. Four years is not a long period of one’s life, but it was long enough for me to develop into a competent engineer.

 

The University and the Department provided me with multiple chances to better myself, both in my studies and in daily life. The professional training includes comprehensive and in-depth civil engineering courses, practical training modules, a design project and a research project. In addition, an 8-week internship programme, which can be taken either in Hong Kong, Mainland China or overseas, enabled us to practise design principles and put our ambitious ideas into real projects. All of those valuable experiences helped my all-round development and endowed me with a passion and genuine love for civil engineering technology and construction. I also gained multicultural exposure through a one-semester academic exchange programme at Purdue University in the USA, where I developed precious friendships within and outside of the University. The only way to understand a culture is by living there and interacting with residents. Thanks to my University, I had a chance to expose myself to a multicultural environment and embrace dynamic changes. I am proud to say that I am a member of FCE, and that I am a part of PolyU.

 

The Chairman of PolyU Council, Mr Chan Tze-ching, once talked about university education. He mentioned that an educated person knows everything about something and knows something about everything. PolyU gave me a chance to gain an insight into civil engineering design, research and innovation, but more importantly, it provided a platform to develop myself in various ways, in both business and negotiation skills, and gain insights into social development trends. Studying doesn’t end at the moment of graduation. PolyU has taught me to be a lifelong learner, always curious for new knowledge and eager for continuous development.

My first year at PolyU has nearly finished. It has been a very challenging time, but also exciting, interesting and meaningful. My civil engineering courses highlighted the diversity of the discipline, covering environmental, geotechnical, hydraulics, structural and transportation engineering. One course, Construction for Better Living, was enjoyably interactive. For instance, in addition to regular lectures and tutorials, we had a site visit to Disneyland. On the trip, we saw classroom knowledge applied to the built environment and some of the ways in which our chosen discipline contributed to real life.

 

My class timetable as a university student was more flexible and wider than I anticipated. It was designed to enable me to explore interests other than engineering. For example, as part of the Cluster Area Requirement, I took Human Nature, Globalisation, Cultures and World Views and Science and Technology, which encouraged me to think critically and comprehensively.

 

I also attended the IC Training offered by the Industrial Centre in mid-August 2013. With a focus on engineering safety, the training was another essential and challenging addition to my efforts to become an engineer.
