Meeting the University's General Entrance Requirements

Applicants must meet the University's General Entrance Requirements before they will be further considered for admission.

Selection Criteria

Applicants' academic and non-academic achievements, other relevant information that has been provided and, where applicable, interview / test performance, will be used to determine whether applicants can make the final admission shortlist. Applicants can refer to the respective programme entries for information on interview / test requirements. If an interview / a test is given, applicants are required to attend the interview / test according to the date and time stipulated as it is difficult for such to be re-arranged. Failing to do so may result in their applications not being further considered. Owing to the keen competition, particularly for programmes with a large number of applicants, applicants' programme choice(s) may also be taken into consideration in the selection process.

Admission Score Calculation

Degree Programmes:

Individual Broad Disciplines (BDs) / programmes will select either 5 or 6 HKDSE subjects for calculation of admission scores starting from the 2017-18 admissions exercise. Admission score calculation mechanisms adopted by programmes looking for 5 subjects will either be “Any Best 5 Subjects” or "Chinese & English Languages + Any Best 3 Subjects" while those looking for 6 subjects will either be "Any Best 6 Subjects" or "4 Core + Best 2 Elective Subjects”. After all, individual BDs / programmes will adopt only one of the mechanisms mentioned for calculating the admission score for initial prioritization of applicants.

Examples illustrating different score calculation mechanisms:

5 Subjects:

(i) Any Best 5 Subjects

The "best" 5 HKDSE subjects (after subject weightings have been applied) will be taken into account.

+     For the purpose of calculating the admission scores, HKDSE level attainments will be converted to level points where Level 5**=7, 5*=6, 5=5, 4=4,

        3=3, 2=2, 1=1 and Unclassified = 0.

^     All relevant subjects will be given a weighting in the calculation of admission scores. You may refer to the respective programme entries for a list

of subjects with the highest weighting. For degree programmes, Core subject as specified in the University General Entrance Requirements will

be given a weighting of at least 7 whilst preferred subjects will be given a weighting of 10. For Higher Diploma programmes, Chinese Language

and English Language will be given a weighting of at least 7 whilst preferred subjects will be given a weighting of 10. All other subjects (including

relevant Applied Learning subjects) will be given a weighting of at least 5.

Handling of Extended Modules of Mathematics

Degree Programmes:

Extended Modules of Mathematics will be treated as a single subject in calculating the admission scores.

Higher Diploma Programmes:

Students not having the level requirement for the other subject for meeting the general entrance requirement may be specially considered if they have attained Level 2 or above in one of the Extended Modules of Mathematics.

For programmes which have specified the Extended Modules of Mathematics (i.e. M1 or M2) as subjects with the highest weighting (please refer to "Entrance Requirements & Subject Weightings" under the respective programme entries at Study@PolyU), if the weighted subject score of M1 or M2 is higher than that of the "last best weighted subject" under "Chinese & English Languages + Any Best 3 Subjects", the "last best weighted subject", and M1 or M2 will each carry 50% weight in the admission score calculation.

Example (1)
Student A takes M1, in addition to taking 4 core + 3 electives. He applies for a programme which has specified the Extended Modules of Mathematics as one of the subjects with the highest weighting, and adopts “Chinese & English Langages + Any Best 3 Subjects” as the admission score calculation mechanism. The admission score of Student A will hence be calculated in the following manner:-

English Language 3   (3) X 7 = 21   --   21 Yes

Core 4 2   (2) X 7 = 14   --   14 No

Subject 1 3   (3) X 10# = 30   -- = 30 Yes (2nd Best)
Subject 2 4   (4) X 7 = 28 X 0.5 = 14 Yes (3rd Best) (see Note below)
Subject 3 5   (5) X 5 = 25   -- = 25 No
M1/M2 5* (6) X 10# = 60 X 0.5 = 30 Yes (see Note below)

Admission Score = 170

Note
Since the weighted score of M1 (i.e. 60) for Student A is higher than the weighted score of his 3rd "Best Elective" (i.e. 28), 0.5 of the weighted score for each of the 3rd "Best Subject" (i.e. 14) and M1 (i.e. 30) will be taken into account in the calculation of Student A's admission score.

Example (2)
Student B also takes M1, in addition to taking 4 core + 3 electives. Since the weighted score of M1 for Student B is not higher than that of the last best weighted elective (i.e. Subject 2 in this example), M1 is not taken into account when calculating the admission score.

+     For the purpose of calculating the admission scores, HKDSE level attainments will be converted to level points where Level 5**=7, 5*=6, 5=5, 4=4, 3=3, 2=2,

with the highest weighting. Chinese Language and English Language will be given a weighting of at least 7 whilst preferred subjects will be given a weighting

of 10. All other subjects (including relevant Applied Learning subjects) will be given a weighting of at least 5.

 #     Preferred subject of the programme concerned.

Handling of Applied Learning (ApL) Subjects

Individual Broad Disciplines (BDs) / degree programmes may consider one relevant Applied Learning (ApL) subject in admission consideration. For Higher Diploma (HD) programmes, a maximum of two ApL subjects will be accepted. An "Attained with Distinction" level in relevant ApL subjects will be taken as Level 3 in admission consideration for degree and HD programmes while "Attained" will be taken as Level 2 for consideration for HD programmes only.

Handling of Alternative Chinese Qualifications

Since Chinese Language is a core subject in HKDSE, all S6 students sitting for HKDSE are expected to either take the examination of Chinese Language or, where appropriate, the alternative Chinese Language. PolyU adopts a standardized arrangement for handling applicants’ alternative Chinese qualifications i.e. applicants endorsed by schools for meeting EDB’s specified conditions and having achieved the required grade [i.e. Grade E or above in GCE(A-Level) / GCE(AS-Level) OR Grade C or above in IGCSE / GCSE / GCE(O-Level) Chinese Language subject or Applied Learning Chinese [ApL(C)] at Attained level or above] will be regarded as obtaining a Level 3 in HKDSE Chinese for meeting our entrance requirements for Degree and Higher Diploma programmes, and for calculation of the related admission scores. These cases will also be highlighted to departments concerned for their attention and suitable consideration.

Admission Scores Calculation for Repeaters

PolyU does not penalize applicants for subsequent attempts in the same public examination and considers the best grades in all public examination attempts. Similar subjects will, however, be considered once in calculating the admission scores.

The following forbidden subject groups as specified by the HKEAA will be considered as similar subjects:

  1. Extended Modules M1; Extended Modules M2
  2. Biology; Integrated Science; Combined Science (Bio + Chem); Combined Science (Bio + Phy)
  3. Chemistry; Integrated Science; Combined Science (Bio + Chem); Combined Science (Chem + Phy)
  4. Physics; Integrated Science; Combined Science (Bio + Phy); Combined Science (Chem + Phy)
  5. Business, Accounting and Financial Studies; Business, Accounting and Financial Studies (Accounting); Business, Accounting and Financial Studies (Business Mgt)
  6. Technology and Living (Food Science and Technology); Technology and Living (Fashion, Clothing and Textiles)
