Aims and Characteristics

Programme Aims

This programme is designed to respond to the increasing demand for local environmental and occupational safety and health legislation on the work environments of organisations and to the demand for graduates who have the skills necessary to work in these focused professional areas. This application-oriented programme aims to provide additional full-time training opportunities to allow Higher Diploma/Associate Degree graduates to gain a full degree qualification and to equip graduates with skills that they can further develop in careers as professionals in the areas of environmental and occupational safety and health.

Characteristics

This programme is the only undergraduate degree programme in safety and health for the construction industry offered by a local university. The programme content can be broadly divided into two areas: environmental protection and occupational safety and health. These interrelated areas are given equal weighting so that graduates are equipped with sufficient knowledge to tackle both environmental and occupational health and safety problems and to develop and implement appropriate systems or preventive measures. The programme is hosted by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, with the support of the Industrial Centre and other units in the University. PolyU has extensive experience in the teaching and research in the areas of environmental and occupational health and safety.

Curriculum

This is a two-year full-time programme. In the first year, in addition to the Core Subjects, students are equipped with adequate mathematical training, particularly in applied statistics, to support their study of other subject areas. In the environmental protection area, students in the first year are exposed to fundamental knowledge in physics, chemistry and biology (including ecology), which forms the essential foundation for later works (in the second year) in more advanced areas, such as waste management and air and noise pollution control and management. The integration and application of these topics are covered in the subject Environmental Management Systems.

For the occupational safety and health side, the first year covers the fundamental knowledge and skills of safety technology, human health and environment, construction safety, occupational health and hygiene, and the second year covers more advanced, integrated studies in accident prevention and analysis, risk management and safety management and audit. The Final Year Project requires students to exercise their independent thinking and learning skills and provides them with an opportunity to individually tackle an environmental and occupational safety and health problem.
