Aims and Characteristics

Programme Aims

This programme aims to provide students and produce highly skilled graduates with:

  1. In-depth knowledge in air transport engineering and operations including aircraft maintenance, airline and airport operations, and regulatory bodies;
  2. Competence to handle a wide variety of engineering challenges in a methodological, technical and practical manner as applied to the aviation industry;
  3. Knowledge and skills to efficiently and effectively manage aviation engineering projects;
  4. Professional aviation communication skill and social responsibility towards the society and the environment.

 

Characteristics

The BEng(Hons) in Air Transport Engineering (ATE) is a top-up degree programme providing fundamental aviation knowledge for HD & AD graduates and to prepare students for professional or licensed aircraft engineer certification and aviation operation management.  Aviation is a multi-disciplinary industry.  For this reason, wherever appropriate, subjects are co-taught by PolyU academics and industry professionals to give students the best possible learning experience and first-hand information related to the aviation industry.

Curriculum

Students are required to complete a minimum of 66 or more academic credits to satisfy the graduation requirements.

  • Out of these 66 credits, 9 credits of General University Requirements (GUR) and 57 credits of Discipline-Specific Requirements (DSR).
  • Plus we have incorporated additional 4 Industrial Centre (IC) training credits in this programme.

 

In the first year of this programme, students will receive fundamental knowledge of aircraft engineering principles and aviation operations.  In the summer, students will have the opportunity to undertake internship programme, which may be offered by industrial partners.

 

In the final year (i.e. the second year of the normal study period), specific knowledge such as airport project management, airworthiness and flight mechanics and control systems will be delivered to students while students are required to select four subjects from a pool of electives from the following streams:

  1. Aircraft Maintenance Engineering*
  2. Aviation Service Engineering
  3. Pilot Ground Theory**

* Students who choose Aircraft Maintenance Engineering stream are eligible for attending B1.1, B2 aircraft maintenance training (subject to approval).

** Students who choose Pilot Ground Theory stream are eligible for attending an Extra Professional Training (EPT) if selected by airlines (subject to approval).

Elective subjects will provide students with professional expert knowledge in a specialised area of aviation. Furthermore, students will have the opportunity to apply their acquired skills and knowledge in their final year project.

 

Summer internships, industrial visits, onsite experience sharing and industrial training are arranged to complement classroom teaching, enhance students’ learning and industrial experience in the field of aeronautics and aviation.  Industrial training will be provided by the PolyU Industrial Centre.

 

Note: Students not meeting the equivalent standard of the Undergraduate Degree Language Communication Requirements (LCR) based on their previous studies in AD/HD programmes and their academic performance will be required to take additional credits (6 in English and 3 in Chinese) on top of the programme's normal credit requirements.

 

Work-Integrated Education

To be eligible for graduation, a student must complete placement training for at least 2 full weeks in a suitable organisation.

Recognition and Prospects

Professional Recognition

This programme has been granted provisional accreditation from the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE).

 

Career Prospects

Graduates will be able to seek employment as professional engineers in aviation engineering fields including aircraft component design, manufacturing and maintenance organisations, in air transportation and logistics organisations, airport engineering operation, and civil aviation authorities.

Entrance Requirements

  • An Associate Degree or a Higher Diploma in a related engineering discipline.
  • In addition to academic results, preference will be given to excellent performance during the interview.

記得小時候乘搭飛機,我經常問我身旁的爸爸:為什麼一架飛機能夠浮在空中,載我們到目的地呢?我在大學主修民航工程後就能找到答案了。原來,飛機能飛上天空是因為伯努利定律、飛機的翼剖面設計等等的原因。除此以外,我修畢課程後,我才發現原來民航工程這個詞語所包含的不單單只是一個工程科目,它還包括:物流、飛機適行、飛機調度、飛行所牽涉的人為因素等等。

除了課本上的知識以外,課程亦為學生提供實踐的機會,在工業中心有應用書本理論的機會,鞏固我們的知識基礎。除了日常課堂以外,我的畢業專題亦為我提供一個難得的機會,讓我對新型飛機物料進行研究。本人在修讀課程期間能對航空業有全面的認識,為我將來投身航空業發展有充足的準備。

香港理工大學及其他機構不但在課程上提供支援,香港政府亦設立了香港航空獎學金來鼓勵修讀民航工程的學生。本人有幸能成為其中一位得獎者。這個獎學金不但為我提供經濟援助外,還對於我對航空業的熱誠作出肯定,此外,我亦獲得由大學所頒發的卓越學生獎。這個獎項鼓勵我付出比其他人更大的努力及為我的學業成績表現作出肯定。


KWAN Ho Man



在修讀理大的民航工程學(ATE)課程後,我有機會接觸到與民航工程相關的基本知識。該課程的科目主要包括航空運作及飛機系統兩大方面的範疇。學生可根據自己的興趣及志向選擇相關選修科 (elective),從而裝備自己。為了提高我對飛機系統的認識,我選擇了航電系統(avionics systems)作為我其中一門的選修科。

 

值得一提的是,香港航空業界,包括香港民航處(HKCAD)、香港國際機場(HKIA)、中國飛機服務有限公司(CASL)等,會向ATE提供一些專題(projects)作為學生畢業專題(Capstone Project)的題目。而我有幸可以負責處理民航處一個關於安全績效指標(Safety Performance Indicators)的專題,這讓我能提早接觸香港航空業機構實際上正在處理的一些專題及問題。

 

總括而言,修讀ATE課程是一個有效途徑讓學生可以接觸及認識與民航工程相關的知識,並為有志投身航行業的學生打好基礎。


CHENG Hiu Man



在修讀民航工程學之前,我對飛機的興趣只是一般。但自從我在課程中學習到飛機的構造和原理後,我對飛機的認識和興趣大大提升,更會主動尋找有關飛機的資料。

 

這個課程的內容很廣泛,除了教我認識飛機的構造外,還讓我學習飛行營運和人為因素的知識。透過認識世界飛行組織及其定立的規則,我明白到飛機飛行為何能這麼安全。此外,課程的工業訓練更給予我親身體驗的機會,讓我模擬製造飛機的機翼,從中我不但可以得知製造過程需注意的地方,還可學習到不同工具的使用方法。

 

修讀民航工程學的同學無論學歷、背景或興趣都各有不同,但這些不同卻無礙我們學習,反而給予我們學習上的優勢。當有同學在學習上遇到不明白的地方,大家都會以自己所學所知互相分享和討論,幫助同學解答疑問,而在這過程中,彼此的知識更可能因此而得以增進。

在理大修讀民航工程學課程之前,我在其他專上學院已讀完有關飛機工程的高級文憑。這相關的經驗令到我這一年在理大的學習表現事半功倍。理大民航工程學課程有別於我曾修讀的高級文憑課程,後者着眼於飛機維修方面,而前者則讓我們能夠從更寬更廣的角度學習航空相關的知識,例如,課程有航空公司的營運、物料採購等科目,這使我們畢業後的出路更廣。

 

於兩年内修畢銜接學位從來不是易事。縱然我曾修讀相關的高級文憑,在學習上依然有吃力的時候。幸好同學之間能夠互相幫助,課堂上遇到的困難最終都可以一一解決。
