Student Message

The Bachelor of Engineering in Air Transport Engineering Programme gives students the chance to understand the concepts underlying the operation of the aviation industry. Students can become familiar with the industry's operation before they take up roles in the industry. Besides, the programme allows students to develop their expertise in different aviation streams and acquire specialised knowledge in the respective fields. These aviation streams are job-oriented, equipping students with the knowledge they will need in the workplace. Furthermore, this programme is a unique experience for students who want to try to navigate an aircraft in a flight simulator.

This programme gave me a more in-depth understanding of aircraft structure and maintenance, airport and airline operations and aviation law. This knowledge enabled me to carefully monitor aircraft equipment when boarding and disembarking. Studying aviation law helped me understand the reasons behind the complicated procedures involved in taking a flight. Most importantly, the programme provides opportunities for students to work in the aviation industry.

OR King Hei

While studying ATE, I received lots of love and support from academic and administrative staff. The programme leader and staff listened to our opinions and did their utmost to help us. To enhance our studies, we could work in computer labs and discussion rooms. Every learner was supported by a designated academic advisor. My academic advisor gave me a helping hand from time to time; he was willing to give me advice and talk in depth with me whenever I felt frustrated with my studies.

Not only did we gain knowledge, but our all-round development was supported through lots of opportunities, such as local and oversea internships, scholarships and competitions. I was honored to be nominated for and to receive the HKIE Logistic and Transportation Division’s Best Student Paper Awards 2018 for my final year project, and to receive a scholarship named the Reaching Out Award from the HKSAR government for my overseas internship experience. These experiences were invaluable.

WONG Kwok Ting

Studying Air Transport Engineering for two years deepened my knowledge of aircraft. The subjects in this programme do not focus solely on aircraft; they also provide knowledge of other aspects of the aviation industry, giving me a great opportunity to learn what being an engineer involves.

The lessons, projects and training taught me much about the structure of aircraft and flying principles and laws. I wish to take this opportunity to thank my professors, their teaching assistants and my classmates for their support and guidance.

As well as aiding our academic development, PolyU and the Division encourage students to apply their knowledge in practice. Every student has to complete a two-week Work-integrated Education (WIE) initiative before graduation. I was fortunate enough to undertake an overseas internship, which was organized by IAESTE and the Division. The work experience I gained, friends I made and opportunity I had to travel around Poland during my internship were unforgettable. I am sure that when I look back ten years later, this experience will be one of the most precious moments of my life.

CHU Wai Lam

As a graduate of the BEng in Air Transport Engineering programme, I am honoured to share with you my experience of studying ATE.

Over the last year, my classmate and I spent lots of time on our final year project. As the topic was industry-related, the project fulfilled the Work-integrated Education requirement of the course. With the professional supervision of an industrial advisor and academic advisor, we completed our project successfully, and we received an excellent grade. This success made our effort worthwhile.

When I look back on my two-year academic journey, I realise that the program gave me a lot of knowledge both in and outside the classroom. Our passionate professors were willing to listen to the problems we faced during our studies, and the Division sought to continuously improve our learning experience, including the facilities, laboratory activities and programme curriculum. I enjoyed studying ATE very much.

CHEUNG Ho Ming

The PolyU BEng (Hons) in Air Transport Engineering has equipped me well for a career in the aviation industry. The programme focuses not only on aircraft engineering theories but also on aviation operations, including airworthiness, human factors and aviation logistics. Besides, the training at the Industrial Centre gave me hands-on skills in fibre composite fabrication, sheet metal-working and machining, which are all manufacturing methods widely used in aeronautical engineering.

Moreover, my summer internship at China Aircraft Services Limited (CASL) gave me solid work experience in a maintenance and repair organization. During the internship, I assisted the engineers in performing maintenance and repair work in the hangar. I also obtained the skills needed to read and interpret aircraft maintenance manual and logbooks, which will be very useful for my future career in the aircraft maintenance engineering field. Overall, this internship experience was extremely rewarding.

Apart from that, many talk sessions and aviation firm visits are organized by the Department, which offer students insights into the latest developments in the industry. In addition, the government has set up the Hong Kong Aviation Scholarship Scheme for students enrolled in aviation-related programmes. I am honoured to be one of the awardees. The scholarship has not only provided me with the financial support I need to focus on learning, but also given me the motivation to develop my career in the aviation industry.

LIM Cheong Sik Nathanael

I have a keen interest in and curiosity about aircraft operation and structure. After completing the Higher Diploma in Aircraft Engineering, I decided to enrol in the Air Transport Engineering (ATE) programme at PolyU. ATE provides comprehensive teaching for students. The professors are friendly and proficient at teaching. We learn and have fun in every lesson. In addition to teaching aircraft-related subjects such as aircraft power systems, aerodynamics and electronic systems, the ATE curriculum covers other useful topics, such as airport operations and even pilot ground theory. Through summer internships, we can apply what we have learned in aircraft maintenance companies like HAECO or CASL, which is very helpful for our future work.

Although studying this subject is not easy. I can manage my performance with encouragement and help from my classmates and support from my professors. My knowledge is enhanced, which makes me confident about completing this programme and pursuing a career in the aviation industry in the future. Therefore, if you are interested in the aviation industry or aircraft, the ATE programme is a good choice for you.
