Programme Aims
This programme provides an excellent opportunity for students who would like to pursue an education in the building engineering and construction management profession. The advancing building construction industry in Hong Kong and neighbouring regions requires graduates who possess highly specialised skills in technology, management and communication. Students also face intellectual challenges that promote self-development and enhance problem-solving skills. Our well-trained graduates are in great demand as professional building engineers and construction managers because they can easily adapt to the changing needs of the construction industry and have developed the expertise that is necessary to plan, coordinate, supervise and control the complex process of building projects.
Characteristics
Students are required to take 121 credits and 2 training credits in the 4 year full-time undergraduate programme. For students with an Associate Degree/Higher Diploma in building engineering and technology (or the equivalent), 69 credits and 2 training credits are required to top up for graduation.
Site visits and guest lectures are arranged throughout the year.
Practical training (Work-Integrated Education) is required during the summer term.
We have a mentorship scheme in which students are matched with a local employer to gain insights into professional practice.
Our Student Exchange Programme with Loughborough University (UK), the Queensland University of Technology (Australia), the Georgia Institute of Technology (USA), the University of Florida (USA) and others, provides opportunities to study abroad.
Students are admitted to the Senior Year of the 4-year degree programme, and they must complete all of the following subjects to fulfil the credit requirement for graduation. Credit transfers are given based on the student's academic results in HD or AD studies.
Core Subjects
Project Management & Procurement, Maintenance Technology & Management, Measurement, Documentation & Estimating, etc.
Elective Subjects
BEM students are required to choose 2 Elective Subjects.
General University Requirement Subjects
Students are required to take the General University Requirement subjects - 6 credits of Cluster-Area Requirements (CAR) and 3 credits of Service Learning Subject (SL).
Capstone Project
Students are required to undertake a 6 credit Capstone Project.
Work-Integrated Education
The Work-Integrated Education (WIE) placement lasts for a minimum duration of four weeks full time (equivalent to 22 full days) or 176 hours part time. The Department has developed opportunities for students to work in firms or through IC training during the summer in Hong Kong. These, and other forms of work experience, can count towards the WIE requirement.
Language Communication Requirements
Students not meeting the equivalent standard of the Undergraduate Degree Language Communication Requirements (LCR) based on their previous academic performance in AD/HD programmes will be required to take additional credits on top of the programme's normal credit requirements.
Professional Recognition
Professional accreditation has been granted from the following institutions:
The Hong Kong Institute of Engineers (HKIE)
The Chartered Institute of Building in the UK (CIOB) and
The Hong Kong Institute of Construction Managers (HKICM)
Career Prospects
Following appropriate training in industry, graduates will become building engineers or construction managers. The continuing growth of Hong Kong's building and infrastructure development offers opportunities for challenging and rewarding careers. Our graduates usually take up positions with construction companies or real estate development companies.
Students can further their studies, for example, by entering our MSc in Project Management or MSc in Construction and Real Estate programmes.
