Aims and Characteristics

Programme Aims

This programme aims to provide students and produce highly skilled graduates with:

  1. In-depth understanding of aviation engineering including aircraft and aviation systems, aircraft design, certification and airworthiness, airline and airport engineering, plus specialised skills in a chosen elective stream of study;
  2. Competence to handle a wide variety of engineering challenges in a methodological, technical and practical manner as applied to the aviation industry;
  3. Knowledge and skills to efficiently and effectively manage aviation engineering projects; and
  4. Professional aviation communication skills and social responsibility towards the society and the environment.

 

 

Programme Characteristics

The Aviation Engineering programme aims to train students to become aeronautical and aviation engineers with strong skills in and understanding of engineering and with engineering management and social responsibility for the society and the environment. Upon completion of this programme, graduates will be able to pursue a career in aircraft component design and engineering, aircraft maintenance engineering, aviation engineering operations and management and many other areas.

Curriculum

Academic and Training Credits

  • For students with Level 2 or above in HKDSE Physics (or Combined Science with a component in Physics), or equivalent qualifications, the number of credits required for graduation is 124 academic credits and 10 Industrial Centre Practical Training credits.
  • For students without Level 2 or above in HKDSE Physics (or Combined Science with a component in Physics), or equivalent qualifications, an additional 3 credits of Introduction to Physics should be taken.

The 124 academic credits consist of 30 mandatory credits of General University Requirements (GUR) and 94 credits of Discipline-Specific Requirements (DSR).

 

In the first year, students acquire broad knowledge in mathematics and science and learn about their role and responsibilities as an engineer, providing them with a strong foundation to learn aviation engineering dedicated subjects in the years that follow.

 

In the second year, students acquire fundamental knowledge of aircraft and aviation systems and gain hands-on experience in aircraft component manufacturing and maintenance processes.

In the third year, students embark on more advanced subjects such as aircraft design, aviation safety, stability and control, propulsion systems and avionics systems.

 

In the final year (i.e., the fourth year of the normal study pattern), students have the opportunity to apply their skills and knowledge in their final year project and focus their study on a desired elective stream to acquire specialised knowledge.

 

Students can choose to pursue one of the following study streams:

  • Aircraft Maintenance Engineering*
  • Aerial Vehicle Autonomy
  • Aircraft Services Engineering
  • Pilot Ground Theory**

Students who choose Aircraft Maintenance Engineering stream are eligible for attending B1.1, B2 aircraft maintenance trainings (subject to approval).

** Students who choose Pilot Ground Theory stream are eligible for attending an Extra Professional Training (EPT) if selected by airlines (subject to approval).

 

Summer internships, industrial visits, onsite experience sharing and industrial training are arranged to complement classroom teaching and enhance students’ learning and industrial experience in the field of aeronautics and aviation. Industrial training is provided by the PolyU Industrial Centre.

 

The programme covers a wide range of aviation engineering and societal knowledge including

  • Aircraft Flight Mechanics, Dynamics and Stability
  • Aircraft Systems and Avionics
  • Aircraft Design and Structures
  • Aircraft Propulsion Systems
  • Aviation Safety, Reliability, Airworthiness and Compliance
  • Air Transport Operations

 

Work-Integrated Education

To be eligible for graduation, students must complete placement training for at least 2 full weeks in a suitable organization.

Recognition and Prospects

Professional Recognition

This programme will seek professional accreditation from the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE).

 

 

Career Prospects

Graduates will be able to seek employment as professional engineers in aviation engineering fields including aircraft component design, manufacturing and maintenance organizations, in air transportation and logistics organizations, airport engineering operation and civil aviation authorities.

Student Message


I am currently in my second year of study in the BEng(Hons) in the Aviation Engineering programme. Over the past two years, I gained a lot of fundamental knowledge about different areas of engineering such as mechanics, material science, electricals and electronics. These subjects allow me to build up a solid foundation for my further studies in the aviation industry.

 

In addition to the lectures and tutorials, the Department provides me with great opportunities and nurtures me as an aviation professional. Visits to industrial organizations have given me a better understanding of the lecture contents and the pathway to becoming a licensed aircraft engineer. I also joined the Aircraft Engineer Development Scheme offered by The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. Through the scheme, guided tutorials were provided on HKAR-66 AML subjects and students could meet their mentors regularly to learn from their decades of experience in the industry.

 

With the training and opportunities provided by PolyU, my passion for becoming an aircraft engineer has strengthened, and I hope to be part of the industry in the near future.


LAU Nelson Yue



The freshman year of study in the AE programme was a fruitful and invaluable learning experience. I have gained a broad foundation of science and engineering knowledge, and through receiving sufficient training in the Industrial Centre and other workshops, I managed to acquire practical and important skills in operating different machines, apparatus and software. Now, as a more senior student, I am equipped with a deeper understanding of aircraft and the aviation industry. I am eager to enroll in advanced subjects including aerodynamics, aircraft design and aircraft electronics to prepare myself as a professional aviation engineer.

 

This programme also requires students to study management and operations in the aviation industry, and courses such as flight management systems and aviation project management ensure students can grasp the related principles in the aviation industry. I am looking forward to the focused stream in the final year, which is one of the special characteristics of the AE programme; we can then unleash our full potential and develop our own specific areas of interest. Those who are also passionate about the aviation industry will dream of this high-quality learning journey, like I did.

 

 

 


YIU Chi Hao



I am an aviation enthusiast and always want to learn more about aviation and the science behind it. Therefore I chose to study the Aviation Engineering programme, and I do not regret making such a choice. In my first year of study, I dived into the world of engineering, and the non-academic lectures and activities held by the Division and the Engineering Departments broadened my outlook and showed me how amazing engineering is. In the programme, students can gain extensive professional knowledge, and learn about real-life engineering through industrial training. Such a well-rounded programme suits future engineers, pilots or even entrepreneurs.

 

In addition to the regular classes, AE students can also join many aviation-related local and international activities. I personally joined many clubs and programmes, and the most memorable so far was the Aircraft Engineer Development Scheme organized by the Hong Kong Institute of Engineers. Through the event, I gained insights into the MRO industry in Hong Kong. I also completed the HKAR-66 examination and training during my studies, which can enable me to become an aircraft maintenance engineer sooner than regular graduates.

 

As a current AE student and a Non-JUPAS applicant, I strongly recommend this programme to aviation enthusiasts, as the opportunities provided by PolyU and the Division make the 4-year university life extremely enjoyable and exciting.

As one of the first batch of students majoring in Aviation Engineering, I feel really proud of what I have achieved on this journey.

 

Within the well-structured curriculum designed by PolyU, I have had the opportunity to join a different overseas project every semester for the last two years. I have been to Nepal for a civil engineering project, Rwanda for a Service-Learning course, Yunnan for voluntary English teaching and Cambodia and Sri Lanka for student-initiated projects. All these programmes were guided by advisors and helpful staff. Learning good time management enabled me to pursue my interests while striving for high academic performance. I have grown so much in the last two years and I am grateful for the role PolyU has played in my personal development.

 

To contribute to the journeys of others, PolyU invites its students to join its Student Ambassador and Global Student Ambassador Programmes. Students can also find support via the university’s MicroFund, Global Student Project Fund and Student Outbound Learning Fund. Work-Integrated Education is a compulsory component of courses here, which gives graduates a great advantage. The Career and Placement Services helped me find my internship in Spain. The opportunities at PolyU really are endless.

 

As a Malaysian student studying abroad, I have had the chance to meet exchange students from all over the world, and this has inspired me and given me the confidence to travel further than I ever imagined.
