Aims and Characteristics

Programme Aims

This challenging programme aims to develop all-round and flexible graduates with fundamental knowledge and practical skills in the inter-disciplinary professions of land management, real estate development and construction project management.  The Programme underpins surveying studies with the disciplines of economics and finance, law, management and technology and cultivates a global mindset with international studies in the real estate and construction markets in China and overseas.

Students are well prepared to enter the professions of building surveying, general practice surveying (real estate), planning and development, property and facility management and quantity surveying (construction economics) with full potential to take leading and strategic roles in the profession and business of land, property and construction.

Characteristics

This is a professional degree programme with a global and practical perspective. Students learn about economics, law, finance and investment, management and technology in the construction and real estate context. Problem identification, problem solving and decision making form the focus of the programme.

There is close contact with the industry through guest lectures, companies and site visits. Students undertake group and individual practical projects throughout their studies. We also have a mentorship scheme in which students are matched with employers and senior members of the professions to gain practical insights into professional practice.

We operate a study exchange programme to provide students with opportunities of studying abroad for one academic semester: our partner  universities include Loughborough University (UK), the Queensland University of Technology (Australia), the University of Florida (USA) and the Georgia Institute of Technology (USA) etc.

We also operate Work-Integrated Education in collaboration with the University to help students in gaining placements.

Curriculum

  • This is a broad interdisciplinary course that aims to provide a liberal education for students aspiring to become knowledge workers in the real estate and construction professions in particular.

  • In the first year, typical students mostly begin with General Education Subjects to fulfil university and faculty requirements. They are introduced to basic knowledge and contemporary issues relating to the broad discipline of Construction and Environment.

  • In the second year, students take subjects designed to develop their professional knowledge and problem-solving skills to undertake property development, and construction and project management, and to work with the dynamics of the industry. Students study foundation subjects in economics, finance and investment, law, management, technology and professional practice.

  • More advanced subjects in the third and fourth years will further prepare students to develop their professional competence in the surveying profession.

  • Further Elective Subjects are offered in the fourth year to help students enter one of the surveying specialisms: Building Surveying, General Practice Surveying, Planning and Development, Property and Facility Management and  Quantity Surveying,

  • Information on the subjects offered can be obtained here.

Student Message

As a Higher Diploma student who was promoted to the Bachelor’s degree programme, I am grateful to have had the opportunity to acquire professional knowledge and practical training during my time at BRE. Over three years, I have gained comprehensive knowledge of the legal, economic, managerial and technological aspects of the real estate development and construction field, and practical skills that have helped me to tackle different tasks in the workplace when undertaking an internship through the Work-Integrated Education programme. I am also very thankful to have been offered invaluable opportunities, such as being an exchange student in Finland and participating in a joint-school summer course in Shanghai that broadened my horizons. Now that I am a final year surveying student I am preparing myself to be a competent graduate. I believe that both the Higher Diploma and undergraduate programmes at BRE are essential for students interested in pursuing professional and practical study in the challenging construction industry.

Lam Lam

Studying in the Higher Diploma programme in Building Technology and Management and the Bachelor of Science in Surveying programme at PolyU was invaluable to me. I was provided with useful knowledge and practical experience, which will be beneficial in my career as a general practice surveyor. For instance, I was able to participate in a summer workshop in which a real construction project was simulated for our class to acquire hands-on experience and enhance teamwork. I was also granted an opportunity to join an exchange programme to study at Tongji University in Shanghai for a semester, and the Work-Integrated-Education scheme allowed me to work as a summer intern with the Lands Department, obtaining experience in areas such as preparing rent reviews and drafting conditions for lease renewals.

Apart from study, I took part in extracurricular activities organized by the dance and film societies. As a sub-committee member of the Social Services Group, I not only had the opportunity to meet new friends and learn from others, but was also able to help the needy.

My university life at BRE was highly fruitful and the programmes I studied in have equipped me well with practical knowledge and experience for my future career.

Studying at BRE is a road to success. Three years ago, I was admitted to the Higher Diploma in Building Technology and Management (Surveying), a two-year programme offered by BRE. Thanks to the excellent programme structure and brilliant teaching, I acquired professional knowledge and developed my interest in surveying. BRE not only concentrates on students’ academic performance but also emphasises their personal development. Study tours and exchange opportunities definitely broaden our horizons. The Department also endeavours to strengthen the bonds between students and the industry, which helps us to gain clearer visions of our future careers. In particular, the Mentoring Programme connects students with mentors and Work-Integrated Education allows us to gain practical work experience in the industry.

Through the promotional path and credit transfer system available in the Department, I have moved onto BSc(Hons) Surveying (Year Two). I have no regrets about choosing to study surveying at BRE. Having set a clear goal to become a quantity surveyor, I believe that the skills I have learned at BRE will be helpful for my future professional development.

PolyU teaches its students the skills needed to apply theory to workplace situations, providing them with valuable practical experience as an integral part of many courses. For instance, in my programme, all students receive professional training under the guidance of engineers and tutors, which ensures that every student is equipped with the essential skills for becoming a professional surveyor.

I have benefitted from participating in various local and overseas internships during my studies. These experiences have broadened my vision of the surveying industry, allowing me to cultivate significant insights and forge a career path.

PolyU encourages its students to pursue extra-curricular interests, including activities in the arts and music. As one of the cellists with the PolyU Orchestra, I have played in numerous concerts, including a performance in Shenzhen and an exchange programme concert with the University of Stuttgart. PolyU provides ample opportunities for students to develop and explore themselves.
