Prorgamme Aims and Learning Outcomes
Industrial and systems engineering is concerned with the design, improvement and installation of integrated systems of people, materials, information, physical science, and social science. This programme teaches students fundamental engineering concepts, information technology, design, management, communication skills, and the principles and methods of engineering analysis and design. It provides an understanding of the complex problems of modern industrial and business operations.
Programme Characteristics
This programme is a subset of the 4-year BEng(Hons) in Industrial and Systems Engineering programme, and shares the characteristics and subjects relating to information systems, human factors and integrated product and process design. Graduates can apply for the department’s degree programmes with credit transfers.
Career Prospects
In Hong Kong and around the world, a new generation of engineers is needed to meet the new era of digital technology. Graduates can typically find work as industrial engineers, systems engineers, project engineers, product development engineers, manufacturing engineers, logistics engineers, marketing engineers, and costing engineers.
Industrial and systems engineers are needed not only for production of goods and services, but also in transportation, hospitals, banks, IT companies and government departments.

In Year One, the Higher Diploma in Industrial and Systems Engineering is comprehensive, with broad-based engineering areas including information technology, mathematics and statistics, university physics, a freshman seminar for engineering and practical workshop training. These subjects help us to familiarise ourselves with engineering while preparing us for the specialised subjects in Year Two.
Moreover, whenever we have any difficulties, the lecturers and professors are eager to help us and provide feedback on our work. In addition, students can comment on the curriculum in the student-staff consultative meetings.  | The first year of the Higher Diploma in Industrial and Systems Engineering programme has equipped me with a basic knowledge of engineering, especially in the aspects of physics, mathematics and IT. Moreover, the training provided by the Industrial Centre has given me insight into the industrial world, allowing me to use various software packages to create 3D images and learn mechatronic systems. Apart from academic study, the department also frequently offers a variety of activities such as dinner gatherings, hiking and visiting local enterprises.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank my professors, who are always willing to help students solve their problems. PolyU is a good place to build your social network.
