Aims & Characteristics

Aims and Characteristics

Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes

This programme aims to make full use of the hugely versatile applications in the in-demand disciplines of electrical engineering and civil engineering to broaden the career opportunities for our graduates. Students are expected to acquire a solid understanding of the fundamentals of electrical engineering and civil engineering, and apply the knowledge gained and techniques learned to the relevant areas in transportation systems.

The programme philosophy focuses on the incorporation of up-to-date engineering knowledge into transportation systems to enhance the efficiency, reliability, safety and maintainability of infrastructure and services. Current practices in transportation, the latest technologies in transportation systems and their integration in the provision of engineering solutions for practical problems form the core of the programme.

Programme Characteristics

This programme is unique in Hong Kong, providing students with interdisciplinary knowledge and perspectives with a direct career path into the high growth transportation industry and related sectors.

Engineering practice is an integrated component of the curriculum. Student learning is supplemented by a variety of laboratory, training and project activities. Students also develop good presentation and problem-solving skills through mini-projects and final-year projects. Students are required to take the Work-Integrated Education (WIE) component, which may be in the form of summer training or industrial attachment.

Students can also participate in exchange programmes and spend a semester at an overseas university. Every year, a number of students participate in exchange programmes with institutions including the Cardiff University, the National University of Singapore, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, the Technical University of Munich and Czech Technical University.

Seminars, industrial visits and overseas study tours are also organized to broaden students' horizons.

  • The first year introduces the concepts of engineering, other general studies and language subjects for our students.
  • The second year focuses on the fundamentals of engineering in general, and introduces students to accounting and economics.
  • In the third year of study, essential knowledge of transportation systems, such as system analysis, planning, and technical subjects from various engineering disciplines, is covered.
  • During their final year, students take five Core subjects in transportation systems and one Elective subjects on advanced or specialised topics of transportation. Students may choose individual projects which are relevant to transportation systems engineering.
  • Information on the subjects offered can be obtained at

I have been enthusiastic about public transportation since I was young so I chose Transportation Systems Engineering as the Major of my undergraduate study. The curriculum of this 4-year programme covers railway and highway system infrastructure, and planning transportation systems, among other things.

Apart from attending lectures, we also undertook practical training at the Industrial Centre during summer after the second year of our study. Simulating working environments and problem-based practical exercises were provided, which gave us the opportunity to apply the knowledge and techniques we learnt during lectures, and provided hands-on experience in practical work related to transportation engineering.

The Department also offers study tours and exchange programmes to students. I participated in a study tour to South West Jiaotong University and learnt about high-speed railway development in China.

The Department has excellent facilities and provides exciting opportunities for undergraduate students to be proficient in their future careers in transportation or related fields. It has helped me take a big step forward towards my dream career.

Transportation System Engineering in the Department of Electrical Engineering at PolyU offers students a route into the transportation and electrical engineering industry. This programme mainly covers the planning and management of transportation systems and also provides some basic electrical knowledge in areas such as power transmission and distribution. Both academic and practical training are provided to students in the four-year curriculum. What impressed me the most was the industrial training, which included electrical installation practice and lighting and electrical system design in simulated working environments. This hands-on experience equipped me with the skills and knowledge I needed in my career journey.

The EE department also offers a study tour every year. I participated in the study tour to South West Jiaotong University in Chengdu in 2016. I also had the chance to work at MTR Corporation Limited in 2018 as a summer intern. I worked in the system integration team in the E&M Construction Department on its Shatin Central Link project, and learned about the complex relationships between the elements involved in developing a new railway line.

Life is full of challenges! I enjoyed my fruitful university life studying Transportation Systems Engineering in the Department of Electrical Engineering at PolyU. I learned some modern transportation technologies, calculated a simplified traffic signal timing plan and modelled transport assignment to achieve an efficient transportation system. Besides, I gained a lot of experience of writing programs and improved my problem-solving skills in an elective course, namely Intelligent Transportation Systems – a useful course to build my career.

In addition to always striving for the best academically, I love to get involved in various co-curricular activities. I joined Beijing and Sichuan study tours in summer. This was a valuable chance to extend my horizons to learn about some large transportation projects; for example, we visited a highway construction site in Sichuan. I had a great time with my friends on the trips!

These valuable opportunities provided me with great memories and connections. I think that my internship at HAECO and my final-year project, Visualization and Data Analysis in Hangzhou Bike System, enabled me to pursue a career as a data analyst after graduation.
