Aims & Characteristics

Aims and Characteristics

Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes

This programme provides in-depth coverage of electrical engineering according to an outcome-based education philosophy. The programme aims to produce engineers who are able to practise their professions in the broad area of electrical engineering which includes, but is not limited to, electrical power systems, energy conversion and utilisation, transportation systems, environmental protection, control, computer and fibre-optic applications.

A modern electrical engineer should possess a broad-based education and adequate specialist knowledge to undertake high-level work in design, planning, supervision and manufacturing. The programme thus places emphasis on the mastery of fundamental principles and application of the latest engineering technology. Of equal importance is the training of leadership, entrepreneurship, and communication skills.

We encourage life-long learning so that graduates can keep abreast of new developments in engineering and technology.

Programme Characteristics

This programme is a major electrical engineering degree programme in Hong Kong that provides unique and up-to-date education in the interesting field of electrical power and energy.

The curriculum is designed to give a balanced treatment of university core requirement, electrical engineering fundamentals, advanced and specialist topics, and non-technical subjects such as economics and management.

Engineering practice is an integrated component of the curriculum. Student learning is supplemented by a variety of laboratory, training and project activities. Students also develop good presentation and problem-solving skills through mini-projects and final-year projects. Students are required to take the Work-Integrated Education (WIE) component, which may be in the form of summer training or industrial attachment.

Students can also participate in exchange programmes and spend a semester at an overseas university. Every year, a number of students participate in exchange programmes with institutions including the Cardiff University, the National University of Singapore, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, the Technical University of Munich and Czech Technical University.

Seminars, industrial visits and overseas study tours are also organized to broaden students' horizons.

  • The Year One curriculum focuses on fundamental students, such as physics, mathematics, languages, information technology and general education.
  • The Year Two curriculum focuses on the fundamentals of engineering science, engineering mathematics, computing, and introductory studies of electrical engineering.
  • In Year Three, students follow a semi-structured study pattern by taking compulsory core subjects in electrical engineering and Elective Subjects. The focus is on consolidating the fundamentals, team work and experimental methods. Besides, discipline-specific language subjects are studied.
  • Students take the advanced Core Subjects and Elective Subjects together with their Final Year Projects. Final Year Projects provide a comprehensive learning experience in engineering technology, problem-solving techniques, communication skills (both written and verbal) and creative thinking. Depending on their career aspirations and specialisation, students can choose from a list of technical and non-technical Electives to complement their knowledge in different areas of electrical engineering.
  • Information on the subjects offered can be obtained at

Student Message

Student Message

I chose to study in PolyU EE not only because of its excellent reputation for groundbreaking innovation, but also because the Department is dedicated to providing high-quality engineering education.

Through attending lectures, I enriched my knowledge of Electrical Engineering. From basic electronics to the power system, and from electric vehicles to fibre optics, I gained insights into various fields in my discipline. This not only broadened my horizon but also enabled me to take advantage of the latest technology and become better equipped for my future career. The teaching staff in PolyU EE are willing to share their precious knowledge and experience with students. They always welcome questions from students.

Various opportunities are offered to consolidate knowledge acquired during lectures and apply theories to solve real-life problems. I joined the Chengdu study tour in Year 3, which gave me rich exposure to new technologies, such as a high-speed railway. I also joined the MATE competition in 2018, which gave me the chance to link the knowledge I had acquired in lectures to real-life applications.

As a fresh graduate in Electrical Engineering, I wish to give my heartfelt thanks to my department for its efforts to nurture new talents in Electrical Engineering.

WU Ka Kit

PolyU’s Department of Electrical Engineering offers one of the best engineering programmes in Hong Kong. The well-structured curriculum and professional technical training equipped me with the skills and knowledge I needed to start my engineering career. During my training, I gained hands-on experience in the well-equipped Industrial Centre at PolyU, including industrial safety training. The subjects offered by the Department of Electrical Engineering often include laboratory sessions, which familiarise students with the equipment and allow us to test out some theories. We were also encouraged by the University to join internship and exchange programmes. This allowed me to gain solid experience in addition to lectures.

It was an awesome journey at PolyU. You can find great friends and supportive faculty members there. The University values all-round development, and so provides students with leadership training and General Education courses. There is a unique programme called Service-Learning, which allowed me to apply my skills and knowledge to serve society. Studying Electrical Engineering at PolyU made me more competitive and valuable. It was a wonderful experience.

WONG Sui Man

I joined the Electrical Engineering programme mainly because I found various related career opportunities and paths in Hong Kong. In this programme, I have acquired fundamental knowledge and hands-on experience. Attending the technical seminars provided by the Department helps me keep pace with the latest developments in the global engineering industry. I am confident that I will become a successful and professional engineer in the future.

Apart from studying, students have opportunities to take part in various activities. I joined a study tour at South West Jiaotong University. During this trip, I made some new friends and encountered new ideas, culture, interests and experiences. This opened my eyes and changed my mindset, ultimately giving me a better understanding of engineering.
