Programme Aims

Learning and teaching are our core activities. We are committed to nurturing our students’ professional competence and supporting their all-round development.

Students complete some General University Requirements core and fundamental business subjects at an early stage. They then choose one of the following awards as their specialism for graduation.


BBA (Hons) in Management

Management skills are required by all business professionals. As an area of study, management is concerned with how to get the best out of people and other resources.

This programme provides students with a well-rounded business education and training in general management, along with the opportunity to specialise in human resource management. Students are equipped with a wide range of management skills to give them the potential to develop as business leaders in Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland and the region. 

BBA (Hons) in Marketing

This programme provides students with a well-rounded business education; competence in the analysis, planning, implementation and control of marketing decisions; analytical ability and research competence; the ability to communicate, interact and intervene in the integrative role that is ascribed to marketing; appreciation of the responsibilities of marketing professionals within broader environmental and international contexts; and literacy in the use of information systems and technology that is relevant to marketing.

All students within the Faculty of Business are encouraged to participate in a range of extracurricular activities, such as leadership training camps, peer tutoring, and mentorship.

If students wish, and subject to availability, they can spend a semester studying at another university overseas or in mainland China, with the credits counted towards their PolyU degree.

Work-Integrated Education (WIE)

To graduate, every student must complete 100 hours (3 training credits) of WIE. The Department offers opportunities for students to work in firms either during the summer vacation or alongside their studies. Summer placements may be available in Hong Kong, in mainland China or overseas. These and other forms of work experience count towards the WIE requirement.


Characteristics of Scheme-based Admission 

Students first follow a common curriculum under the Scheme.

It offers students approximately one year to identify their area(s) of interest and career aspirations, which facilitates their Major programme selection. 

The decision to admit a student to a Major programme will be made by the Department based on the student's choice, overall GPA of Year One study, and individual subject results (i.e., MM2021 Management and Organisation and MM2711 Introduction to Marketing). Students will be asked to indicate their choices of Major programme during Semester 2 of their Year One study for the Department's consideration and approval. 

In the event of oversubscription for any of the programmes, the number of students admitted to that programme will be capped at 60% of the number of students in the respective years. 




All programmes under the Scheme have the following structure:

  • General University Requirements (GUR)
  • Compulsory Core subjects for all programmes under the Scheme
  • Discipline-specific subjects
  • Free Electives

Year 1 covers the University’s Compulsory Core subjects and fundamental business subjects, along with Broadening subjects and Language and Communication Requirements subjects. This wide exposure to business, management, and marketing disciplines helps students to make an informed choice of award (specialism) for graduation.

From Year 2 onwards, students follow the curriculums of their selected Major programmes. They also have the chance to apply their knowledge through a year-long Capstone Project in their final year of study.

The option of Secondary Major in AI and Data Analytics (AIDA) is available to the students admitted to the two programmes under the BBA (Hons) Scheme in Management and Marketing.


The curriculum structure of our programmes with a Secondary Major in AIDA is as follows:

Minimum credit requirements for graduation At least 132 credits At least 132 credits


9 credits of GUR subjects and 12 credits of SMR subjects can be fulfilled by completing the relevant DSR subjects.

Students are also required to complete 3 training credits in Work-Integrated Education (WIE) in order to graduate.


The 87 credits of DSR in Management + AIDA include 81 credits of compulsory subjects and 6 credits of elective subjects, and those in Marketing + AIDA include 84 credits of compulsory subjects and 3 credits of elective subjects.



Students enjoy the same professional recognition as their counterparts in the respective regular full Major.

  • Graduates of the BBA(Hons) in Management are eligible to apply for Associate Membership of the Hong Kong Institute of Human Resource Management (HKIHRM), provided that they have passed, in addition to the Core Subjects, at least any THREE of the specialist subjects under the HRM concentration, including Employee Relations, Employment Law, Human Resource Management in China, International HRM, Reward & Performance Management, Staffing and Selection, and Training and Development.
  1. Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA):
  • Exemption from Entry Level: Operational Level Objective Test papers: E1, P1, F1

Career Prospects

The multidisciplinary nature of these programmes, which foster knowledge and skills in general management, managerial leadership, human resources management, marketing, advertising and digital marketing, maximises the employment opportunities available to graduates. Graduates can take up a wide variety of general management and administrative positions, including those of management trainee, training official, and recruitment official, in various areas, such as customer services, public relations, and consumer affairs and protection.

I would say that my university life prepared me very well for a promising career path with good personal growth. The BBA in Management programme at PolyU gave me not only all-round business knowledge but also a variety of opportunities to explore the real world, such as overseas exchange studies, FB CARES programmes and business competitions.

In terms of academic development, I really appreciate PolyU’s commitment to providing students with opportunities for practical application instead of merely learning from classroom teaching. The structure of the programme is designed to help students to grasp theoretical knowledge in various fields of business management at the first stage and thereafter engage in more practical activities in which they initiate projects to apply and integrate what they have learned to solve real world business-related problems or develop business innovations. Students are also encouraged to apply everything they have learned to serve the community through a specific service-learning course.

Apart from my academic studies, I gained whole-person development through participation in various extra-curricular activities. Whether as a peer mentor, student helper, event organizer or group leader, I learned to be a real leader capable of coordinating with people from diverse backgrounds. These activities unleashed my leadership potential while developing my interpersonal skills, which is the key to success in my future career development.

One of my most remarkable experiences was a one-semester exchange study to Tsinghua University’s School of Economics and Management during my penultimate year of study. This exchange experience enabled me to step out my comfort zone to explore the outside world independently while expanding my personal network with outstanding students all over the world. Even more importantly, I experienced the unique academic atmosphere of one of the top universities worldwide. These experiences not only broadened my global horizons, but also helped me to better understand myself.  

In sum, through studying the BBA in Management programme, I was well equipped with a solid foundation of business knowledge, a global horizon, self-motivation, a positive attitude towards challenges and the desire to contribute to the community through my business acumen.

Looking back on my time here as a Marketing student, I believe that everything starts with a dream.

PolyU offers a variety of opportunities for students to develop a global perspective and gain real-world business experience. I was selected to be one of the student ambassadors for the International Research Society at the Public Management Conference and the 7th PRME Asia Forum. I was also lucky enough to be appointed as one of the Google student helpers involved in organizing the Empowering Young Entrepreneurs Programme Gala Event.

Marketing is a diverse industry to work in. Ranging from advertising and promotion to brand management, there are various jobs you can take and companies you can work for. Thanks to the recommendations of the Faculty of Business and Department of Management and Marketing, I was able to work for a sizeable organization, namely Microsoft, as the Microsoft Student Partner and Marketing Intern. Working for one of the world’s largest technology companies was amazing. I had the chance to plan and execute large-scale marketing campaigns and was offered freedom in creating promotional materials. This is undoubtedly the most incredible internship experience I have ever had.

I proudly present myself as a Management student from PolyU.

The courses in this Bachelor's programme have given me great flexibility to own my learning. With the guidance and experience sharing of various teachers and practitioners via the Department, Faculty and University, I decided on my own stream in management, choosing corresponding courses. I am grateful to be taught by world-class instructors. I have learned about important topics in the field of organisational management. The Department and Faculty actively involved students in connecting and exchanging their ideas with practitioners. This grants me invaluable learning opportunities to understand the context of the workplace. Through my academic and workplace learning, I have become well equipped to compare, analyse and obtain insights. It has been rewarding to conduct research in the business field.

My experience in MM has been great so far, as it provides numerous opportunities to reach out to the world. Demonstrating substantial self-discipline, I was able to travel to Hangzhou China, Singapore and Greece for internships. Proactively spurring my whole-person development, I was able to join programmes that helped me to develop a global vision through exposure to different cultures and communities. This added a lot of value to my learning at MM. It taught me to own my learning, my career and my life.

Having the chance to study at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University was invaluable. This programme gave me opportunities to connect with different people from all around the world and broaden my international insight. Studying in Finland was a memorable experience, helping me to get along with foreign students. Please do not be discouraged by the expense associated with such experiences, because the University supports and encourages us to explore the world through various scholarships.

Loads of extra-curricular activities are available to foster our social well-being. I participated as a society committee member. This not only develops students' communication skills and critical thinking, but also prepares them for future careers in management. I urge each of you to seize the chance to join those activities; you will at least make new friends. I truly appreciate the vision of our university in providing a variety of activities to support students’ personal growth.

Last but not least, I am thankful to all our beloved teaching fellows, as they are always there when we need support for our work. There are also many supporting facilities, such as classrooms and discussion areas, as well as technical assistance. After I graduate this year, I will miss my enriching university life at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

My four years at PolyU offered a memorable and rewarding experience of learning, adapting and developing. Before gaining admission to the PolyU BBA programme, I grew without any key interests or specific career goals. However, the curriculum of the Business Management programme allowed me to gain an in-depth knowledge of business organisations and the global marketplace. PolyU also encourages practical learning experiences in workplaces by giving students opportunities to acquire internships and hands-on experience and to apply theories learned and case studies in real-life business settings in preparation for our future career development. PolyU provides an extensive and all-round curriculum that allows students to utilise their academic knowledge for both their personal and their career development.

I admire PolyU for embracing cultural diversity and for its dedication to providing students with a global outlook and international exposure. I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to participate in the Work-Integrated-Education (WIE) programme, taking up an internship in a diamond-focused jewellery company in New York City. This work experience allowed me to realise my passion, and it also acted as a turning point in my career development, leading me to pursue different career pathways suited to my passion and interests.

All of these years of study at PolyU helped me to shape directions and set goals for my future career. PolyU emphasises not only the academic aspect but also the importance of equipping students with a comprehensive skill set and experiences. 

Life is full of uncertainty and things often do not turn out as we planned or expected. However, when life gives you lemons, use them to make lemonade. Graduating from the PolyU BBA programme not only represented the completion of my learning process. Seizing every opportunity to learn and become a well-rounded individual with the right attitude is undoubtedly the key to achieving success. I learned this during the past four years.
