Aims and Characteristics

Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes

This programme aims to make full use of the hugely versatile applications in the in-demand disciplines of electrical engineering and civil engineering to broaden the career opportunities for our graduates. Students are expected to acquire a solid understanding of the fundamentals of electrical engineering and civil engineering, and apply the knowledge gained and techniques learned to the relevant areas in transportation systems.

The programme philosophy focuses on the incorporation of up-to-date engineering knowledge into transportation systems to enhance the efficiency, reliability, safety and maintainability of infrastructure and services. Current practices in transportation, the latest technologies in transportation systems and their integration in the provision of engineering solutions for practical problems form the core of the programme.

Programme Characteristics

This programme is unique in Hong Kong, providing students with interdisciplinary knowledge and perspectives with a direct career path into the high growth transportation industry and related sectors.

Engineering practice is an integrated component of the curriculum. Student learning is supplemented by a variety of laboratory, training and project activities. Students also develop good presentation and problem-solving skills through mini-projects and final-year projects. Students are required to take the Work-Integrated Education (WIE) component, which may be in the form of summer training or industrial attachment.

Students can also participate in exchange programmes and spend a semester in an overseas university. Every year, a number of students participate in exchange programmes with institutions including the Catholic University of America, the National University of Singapore, the Technical University of Denmark, the Technical University of Munich and Czech Technical University.

Seminars, industrial visits and overseas study tours are also organized to broaden students' horizons.

  • The first year introduces students to the concepts of engineering, other general studies and language subjects.
  • The second year focuses on the fundamentals of engineering in general, and introduces students to accounting and economics.
  • In the third year of study, essential knowledge of transportation systems, such as system analysis, planning, and technical subjects from various engineering disciplines, is covered.
  • During their final year, students take five Core Subjects in transportation systems and one Elective Subject on advanced or specialised topics of transportation. Students may choose individual projects that are relevant to transportation systems engineering.
  • Information on the subjects offered can be obtained at

Student Message

I started studying Transportation Systems Engineering at PolyU as I was interested in advanced international transit networks like those in Hong Kong. This programme is unique and interesting, as it covers two broad areas of engineering, aimed at solving transportation problems effectively. I have acquired valuable theoretical and hands-on experiences during lectures and the Industrial Centre training. In addition to engineering subjects, our Department engaged students in other disciplines to hone our skills in mathematics, improve our communicative abilities and expand our horizons. I am delighted to be a student of PolyU, and hope it will lead me to a brighter future! I would certainly recommend studying Transportation Systems Engineering at PolyU!

Azat Alimkhanov

Being an international student studying at PolyU will definitely be part of the most unforgettable memory of my life.  I am from Malaysia and am currently a Year 2 student studying in the BEng in Transportation System Engineering programme. Studying and living in Hong Kong along with meeting and exchanging academic ideas with people from all around the world have enhanced my social competence as a global citizen.

If you join this programme you will find yourself learning more than theoretical knowledge; hands-on practical training is available to connect theoretical knowledge with industry practice. The Department of Electrical Engineering frequently hosts events and site visits for students to prepare them to step into the job industry.  Last year, I joined a departmental site visit to the HK Electric power station on Lamma Island, which broadened my perspective in terms of applying theory.

Apart from study, PolyU offers a wide range of extracurricular activities and interest clubs for students.  Last year, I joined the PolyU Drama Club and had the chance to perform with professional actors.

Last but not least, studying at PolyU allows you to explore a diverse range of learning opportunities outside the classroom!
