  • Without being subject to further assessment, students are allowed to enrol on a major of Building Sciences and Engineering with/without the specialism of Building Services Engineering depending on the student’s choices of elective subjects.
  • The options of Secondary Major in Innovation and Entrepreneurship and AI and Data Analytics are available to the students of BEng(Hons) in Building Sciences and Engineering. Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes

We nurture graduates with the technical and academic competence needed to excel in building sciences and engineering/building services engineering.

 

This programme meets the demand for locally trained building/building services engineers with expertise in the fields of consultancy, contracting, building management, and research and development.

 

Our graduates also have a broad range of personal skills, such as the ability to communicate effectively, think critically, learn independently, and address new problems innovatively.

 

Programme Characteristics

Students learn the art and science of providing safe, healthy, and energy-efficient built environments with minimal adverse environmental impacts. They also have the chance to tackle intellectual challenges that prepare them to become future managers in the industry.

 

Students have the opportunity to work in teams, lead small projects, work independently and interact with highly qualified and professional staff. They also have access to a variety of design software and laboratory facilities for the latest building sciences and engineering applications, such as artificial intelligence and big data for smart buildings. 

 

Local and offshore summer placement opportunities are offered.

 

Students who join the Student Exchange Programme can study at universities in the United States, Europe, Australia, Russia, Southeast Asia, or the Chinese mainland for a semester.

 

Students are regularly awarded scholarships by professional bodies and major organisations in Hong Kong.

Curriculum

Curriculum

  • Students begin by learning the fundamentals of indoor built environments, building information modelling and programming, data science, architecture and buildings, thermal science, fluid and electrical engineering, and mathematics.
  • In Year 3, students apply their foundational knowledge to the design and operation of major building service engineering systems.
  • In the final year, students opt for electives from a pool addressing the latest developments and technology in the fields of building sciences and engineering, and undertake a major project.

Secondary Major Details

(i) The option of Secondary Major* in Innovation and Entrepreneurship (IE) is available to the students of BEng(Hons) in Building Sciences and Engineering.

Features

BEng (Hons) in Building Sciences and Engineering plus Innovation and Entrepreneurship (IE) offers an interdisciplinary and integrated programme to nurture graduates with the mindset and skillset needed for building sciences and engineering/building services engineering and innovation and entrepreneurship. Through this flexible programme structure and cross-disciplinary design, students are equipped with knowledge and techniques critical to building sciences and engineering/building services engineering and the analysing, planning, and implementing of financially-viable and technically-feasible innovation and entrepreneurship. Students are also provided with hands-on experience in innovative and entrepreneurial activities. Upon completion of the programme, students will be well-positioned to play a vital role in both building services engineering industry and the innovation and technology industry in Hong Kong, the Greater Bay Area and beyond.

(ii) The option of Secondary Major* in AI and Data Analytics (AIDA) is available to the students of BEng(Hons) in Building Sciences and Engineering.

Features

BEng (Hons) in Building Sciences and Engineering plus AI and Data Analytics (AIDA) is an interdisciplinary and integrated programme to equip students with a strong foundation in building sciences engineering/building services engineering, computer science, statistics and mathematics, so as to nurture them to have technical and academic competence needed to excel in building sciences and engineering/building services engineering and make use of AIDA techniques to solve contemporary problems in a discipline of building sciences engineering/building services engineering.  It will incorporate a block of AIDA subjects (such as programming, mathematics, statistics, big data, AI and machine learning) into the study of BEng (Hons) in Building Sciences and Engineering focusing on building sciences engineering/building services engineering. Students will complete their study equipped with technical skills related to AI and Data Analytics, coupled with the domain knowledge from a block of subjects chosen from BEng (Hons) in Building Sciences and Engineering, in addition to the GUR subjects. An Integrated Capstone Project (ICP) will also be included, with the aim of developing the capabilities of a student in analysing and solving complex and potential real-life problems, as well as training them in skills related to systematic development and documentation of a significant piece of work.

AMA1611 Data Analytics Fundamentals and Integrated Capstone Project can be double counting.  Students taking the secondary major in AIDA will take Integrated Capstone Project in lieu of Capstone Research Project. Professional Recognition

The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) has granted full accreditation to the BEng (Hons) in Building Services Engineering.  The accredited BEng (Hons) in Building Services Engineering programme will be renamed the BEng (Hons) in Building Sciences and Engineering from 2022/23. The Department has informed the HKIE of the change in the programme name.  Academic programmes in the building services discipline that are accredited by the HKIE are reciprocally recognised by the UK's Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE).

 

Career Prospects

Graduates have good career prospects in the building construction and real estate sectors.

 

The rapid construction of new and state-of-the-art buildings in Hong Kong provides numerous attractive local employment opportunities. As the programme is widely recognised, these opportunities also extend to the Chinese mainland and overseas.

 

Graduates often begin their careers as trainee engineers in government departments, consulting firms, contracting companies, property management companies, or utility companies.

 

First Class Honours graduates may consider research an attractive alternative, especially because building development in Hong Kong embraces advanced technology.

Building services engineering is exceptionally important to the sustainable development of the construction industry. As cities around the globe become more densely populated, the demand for high-rise buildings with good building performance is increasing dramatically. I enjoy studying BSE at PolyU because I value the holistic teaching approach the course adopts. The professors are responsive and welcoming in helping students to acquire and accumulate professional knowledge. As well as providing academic knowledge, the programme incorporates industrial training and hands-on work experience in building companies, which are crucial to becoming a practical and pragmatic engineer. I believe that the knowledge and experience obtained here will help me to become a professional problem solver who is able to cope with challenges and obstacles in the construction industry and meet the demands of the rapidly changing global market.
