BEng (Hons) Scheme in Civil Engineering and Sustainable Development

This brand new BEng (Hons) Scheme in Civil Engineering and Sustainable Development is designed to provide students with a high-quality interdisciplinary education in the areas of civil engineering, structural and fire safety engineering, and environmental engineering. Students have a unique opportunity to study a common curriculum for the first year so that they know how to select their major (out of four programmes) at the end of Year 1. The programmes will bring interesting and practical learning experiences to students, and offer them a range of highly in-demand skills for career development.   Graduates are eligible to join Scheme A training of The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers in the Civil, Structural, Geotechnical, Fire, Environmental and Logistics & Transportation Engineering disciplines.  

 

BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering

This professional programme is designed to provide students with a broad-based and high-quality interdisciplinary education in the areas of environmental, geotechnical, hydraulic, structural and transportation engineering as well as construction management. It aims to nurture well-rounded civil engineering graduates who are ready to work on projects with complex commercial, social, legal and political components.

This programme aims at educating students to be competent engineers who can design, maintain and retrofit both new and existing buildings, by providing technical knowledge of structural engineering and both active and passive fire protection technologies.

BEng (Hons) in Environmental Engineering and Sustainable Development

This programme is the first of its kind offered by Hong Kong institutions; it emphasises environmental engineering, sustainable development, and occupational safety and health.

 

In addition to environmental engineering, this programme covers water and waste management, circular economics, energy sustainability, and urban development. Graduates of this programme will be able to devise practical solutions to environmental and safety problems and contribute to policy formulation that will lead to sustainable development.

  • Comprehensive civil engineering subjects are taught in the third and the fourth years, covering practical knowledge of environmental, geotechnical, hydraulic, structural and transportation engineering.
  • In the final year, students are required to work on an Individual Project and a Design Project.  Students are also allowed to choose elective subjects based on their interests.

 

BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering (Structural and Fire Safety Engineering)

  • The comprehensive core subjects of structural and fire disciplines are taught throughout the programme.
  • In the final year, students are required to work on an Individual Project and a Design Project.

 

BEng (Hons) in Environmental Engineering and Sustainable Development

  • Comprehensive environmental, sustainable development, and occupational safety and health subjects are taught.
  • Students are also allowed to choose elective subjects based on their interests, such as Logistics and Transportation.

This programme is designed to provide students with not only the fundamental knowledge in civil and transportation engineering, but also knowledge in data analytics and computing. It aims to educate a new generation of civil engineering students with contemporary skills including attributes such as fast learners, creative thinkers, problem-solvers, and active collaborators in the smart mobility industry.

  • Only students with a Cumulative GPA of 2.70 or above may be considered for enrollment to the Secondary Major.
  • Students who wish to withdraw from the Secondary Major must obtain approval from the Department before the end of the add/drop period of the last semester of study.
  • For students who have successfully withdrawn from the Secondary Major, the student's major will be changed to BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering. The graduation may be delayed.

 

Professional Recognition

Full accreditation of the programme by The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) will be sought. Graduates of this programme may then be qualified for Scheme A training of HKIE in the following disciplines.

Student Message


Four years ago, I stepped onto this campus as an immature and insecure freshman. Right now, I am ready to enter society confidently as a civil engineer with a dream and a detailed life plan. Four years is not a long period of one’s life, but it was long enough for me to develop into a competent engineer.

 

The University and the Department offered me multiple chances to better myself, both in my studies and in daily life. The primary professional training includes comprehensive and in-depth civil engineering related courses, practical training modules, a design project and a research project. Apart from them, an 8-week internship programme, which can be taken either in Hong Kong, mainland China or overseas, enables us to practise design principles and put our ambitious ideas into real projects. All those valuable chances helped my all-round development, and endowed me with a passion and genuine love for civil engineering technology and construction. I have also gained multi-cultural exposure through a one semester academic exchange programme at Purdue University in the USA and have developed precious friendships within and outside of the University. The only way to understand a culture is by living there and interacting with residents. Thanks to my University, I had a chance to expose myself to a multi-cultural environment and embrace dynamic changes. I am proud to say that I am a member of FCE, and that I am a part of PolyU.

 

The Chairman of PolyU Council, Mr. Chan Tze-ching, once talked about university education. He mentioned that an educated person knows everything about something and knows something about everything. PolyU not only gives me a chance to gain an insight into civil engineering design, research and innovation, more importantly it provides a platform to develop myself in various ways, both in business and negotiation skills, and gives me insight into social development trends. Studying does not end at the moment of graduation. PolyU teaches me to be a lifelong learner, always curious for new knowledge, and eager for continuous development.

Civil engineering is an exciting and challenging career. The profession is becoming more critical as the need for sustainable development and environmental responsibility increases. As a civil engineering undergraduate at PolyU, I have been given many chances to practise what I have learned in class. The course is designed to provide students with a broad-based and high-quality education in the areas of structural, environmental, transportation, hydraulic and geotechnical engineering, in addition to construction management. Extra components of the course include eight weeks of practical training in the technologically advanced Industrial Centre. Between the second and third years, students undertake an eight-week industry placement, based in companies either in Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland or overseas. This training taught me something about the real world of civil engineering. I also had the opportunity to study abroad for a semester through a subsidized exchange programme with Leeds University. This broadened my horizons to the extent that I learned that professional civil engineers need more than local experience and fundamental engineering knowledge to be fully effective in their careers. Confidence, the ability to take the initiative and the capacity to communicate on all levels are necessary for professional success. I am glad that I studied at PolyU because the broad social and academic experience I gained has enhanced my competitive skills and deepened my interest in the wider issues of civil engineering, all of which will be advantages in furthering my career.
