Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes

This programme is underpinned by the philosophy that our graduates should be capable of coping with rapidly changing market conditions in Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland and the region, and with the demands of their future professions in land surveying, geo-information technology and utility management and surveying. The Department has close links with professional bodies and invites industry experts to give guest lectures to students whenever appropriate.

 

The aims of the programme are to:

  • provide a land surveying education that meets the requirements of Hong Kong and overseas professional bodies; and
  • equip students with geo-information technology and utility management skills, enabling graduates to work competently and confidently as geographic information systems professionals in disciplines such as transport and logistics, and environmental, socio-economic, commercial and construction surveying; or as utility professionals in a discipline related to the survey, condition diagnosis, maintenance and management of underground facilities.

 

Upon completion of the programme, students are able to:

  • apply appropriate mathematical and computing skills to solve problems and analyse data;
  • comprehend and apply geomatics concepts and theories;
  • master geomatics technologies and apply them appropriately;
  • integrate various geomatics technologies to solve problems in a professional, timely and cost effective manner;
  • carry out and manage geomatics projects;
  • work with and supervise others in accordance with, and abide by, society’s legal, ethical and professional standards; and
  • respond to advancements in geomatics and related technologies, as part of their continuous, lifelong learning.

Curriculum

Curriculum

The programme curriculum enables students to develop all-round abilities ready for professional careers through subjects related to the land/utility surveying and geo-informatics industry and subjects related to languages, ethics and global engagement. Compulsory LSGI subjects are offered every year and in progressive patterns, whereas our 20 LSGI elective subjects are typically offered once every 2 years, to provide students with two chances to choose a particular subject of interest during their 4-year study period. This combination of compulsory and elective subjects equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to comprehend basic and advanced technologies. These include basic surveying, positioning and navigation skills and advanced 3D mapping, modelling, visualisation skills related to the analysis of terrain, infrastructures, buildings, underwater environments, the underground world and even other planets, with emphases changing with time. Our graduates are of the highest calibre and are well equipped to pursue professional careers or further education after their 4 years of study.

This Secondary Major in AI and Data Analytics (AIDA) to BSc (Hons) in Land Surveying and Geo-informatics aims at offering a means to understand and promote the theories and science of smart cities, gathering city-scale data and providing the apparatus to transform this data into knowledge. It capitalizes on emerging developments in Big Data and in interdisciplinary solutions to the world’s urban challenges.

 

Remarks

Students of BSc (Hons) in Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics who opt for the Secondary Major in AIDA shall fulfil the requirements tabulated below:

* Students who opt for the Secondary Major shall take Integrated Capstone Project in place of "LSGI4502 Final Year Project", and are not required to take "LSGI3245 Geospatial Database Management and Design" & "LSGI3321A Remote Sensing". They will also take 4 elective subjects less, i.e. 18 credits of electives rather than 30 credits of electives.

The programme is accredited by The Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors (HKIS), The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), The Land Surveyors Board Malaysia (LSB), and The Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (CICES). Re-accreditation will also be sought from The Hong Kong Institution of Engineering Surveyors (HKIES).

Studying in the Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics (LSGI) enriches my university life and fosters my personal development.

 

As the leading and only department in Hong Kong that offers qualifications and courses in geomatics, LSGI provides outstanding teaching. I was given many opportunities to acquire a wide range of knowledge that interests me, such as traditional surveying and modern cutting-edge technologies. When encountering problems, the professors and teachers there were very friendly and willing to help. They welcome any discussions about our academic or career life. With the support from LSGI, I had a fulfilling life as a student.

 

The department also provides lots of chances to broaden our horizons. During my four years of university life, I have many unforgettable experiences, such as participating the exchange program, survey camps, and student competitions. I met friends from diverse backgrounds and learnt not only in the classroom but beyond. These enlightening opportunities are surely the highlights of my university life and making me a better person.

The Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics (LSGI) offers you one of the best learning experiences in the areas of Land Surveying, Geo-informatics and Utility Management and Surveying disciplines, in aid of full support from the internationally renowned teaching staff.

 

Being educated in the LSGI undergraduate program, you will be provided with comprehensive learning resources related to land surveying, GNSS surveying, spatial data collection and analysis, virtual reality (VR), remote sensing, photogrammetry, and utility surveying (more is waiting for you!). Regarding practical learning, you could also have lots of exposure to the latest surveying technology, such as laser scanning and drone survey.

 

Despite the local study, LSGI also encourages students to nurture international perspectives by organizing different international conferences and overseas exchange programs. I was so fortunate to be nominated to have an overseas exchange to University of Calgary in Canada in the first semester of Year 3. It is one of the most unforgettable and invaluable lifelong experiences for me, as I could immerse myself into another culture and learning environment which broadened my horizon and trained my self-care ability.

 

With close linkage to the industry (both local and international), a clear career path is paved for every LSGI graduate. If you are interested in land surveying or geo-informatics or utility surveying, I strongly advise you to get into this program. Looking forward to seeing you in LSGI.
