Programme Aims, Learning Outcomes and Characteristics

BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering and Sustainable Development

The BEng (Hons) programme provides a well-structured top-quality interdisciplinary education that is a balanced combination of state-of-the-art knowledge and the highly in-demand skills that underpin modern civil engineering practice.

The Year 1 common curriculum offers a broad fundamental education that integrates subjects from across civil and environmental engineering disciplines. This enables students to make a genuinely informed choice about the major in which to specialise from their second year of study.

Graduates are eligible to join Scheme A training of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers in Civil, Structural, Geotechnical, Fire, Environmental, or Logistics & Transportation Engineering, in accordance with their chosen major (civil engineering, structural and fire safety engineering, and environmental engineering).

BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering

This programme aims to nurture well-rounded civil engineering graduates who are conversant in all areas of environmental, geotechnical, hydraulic, structural and transportation engineering and in construction management. Graduates will be able to plan, design, construct, and manage interdisciplinary civil engineering projects incorporating complex commercial, environmental, social and legal considerations.

BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering (Structural and Fire Safety Engineering)

This is a unique programme that combines the essential elements of structural engineering, civil engineering, and fire safety engineering to address the emerging challenges of structural safety and fire safety in high-rise structures and densely populated cities. Graduates are equipped with fundamental knowledge and practical skills in structural engineering and active and passive fire-protection technologies, and assume key roles in designing, maintaining, and retrofitting new and existing buildings.

BEng (Hons) in Environmental Engineering and Sustainable Development

This is a unique programme that integrates elements of environmental engineering, sustainable development, and occupational safety and health. This enables graduates to devise practical solutions to environmental and safety problems in the areas of water and waste management, circular economies, energy sustainability, and urban development, and to contribute to policy formulation that will lead to sustainable development.

Attractive features

  • A 4-year (1 common year + 3 years of a selected major) full-time comprehensive programme.
  • Opportunities to join exchange programmes for one or two semesters at universities with international reputations.
  • Practical training modules in the technologically advanced Industrial Centre of the University.
  • Summer placements in Hong Kong, Mainland China or overseas.
  • A global learning experience for each student.
  • Scholarships are available for students demonstrating excellent academic performance.

Student Message

Student Message

Four years ago, I stepped onto this campus as an immature and insecure freshman. Now, I am ready to confidently enter society as a civil engineer with a dream and a detailed life plan. Four years is not a long period of one’s life, but it was long enough for me to develop into a competent engineer.

The University and the Department enabled me to better myself in multiple areas in my studies and in my daily life. Our primary professional training included comprehensive and in-depth civil engineering courses, practical training modules, a design project and a research project. In addition, an 8-week internship programme, which could be taken either in Hong Kong, mainland China or overseas, enabled us to practise design principles and incorporate our ambitious ideas into real projects. All of these opportunities contributed to my all-round development and endowed me with a passion and genuine love for civil engineering technology and construction. I also gained multi-cultural exposure through a one-semester academic exchange programme at Purdue University in the USA. The only way to truly understand the culture of an area is to live there and interact with residents, and I was able immerse myself in a multi-cultural environment at Purdue and enjoy many unique experiences and make new friends. I have also developed great friendships within and outside PolyU. I am proud to say that I am a member of the FCE and that I am a part of PolyU.

In speaking about university education, the Chairman of PolyU Council, Mr. Chan Tze-ching, once mentioned that an educated person knows everything about something and knows something about everything. PolyU has given me this kind of education, as in addition to providing me with an excellent education in civil engineering design, research and innovation, it has enabled me to develop business and negotiation skills and given me insights into social development trends. Moreover, I now recognise that learning does not end at the moment of graduation; PolyU has taught me to be a lifelong learner, always curious for new knowledge, and eager for continuous development.

Jason Sun

Civil engineering is an exciting and challenging career, and is becoming increasingly critical for society as the need for sustainable development and environmental responsibility grows. As a civil engineering undergraduate at PolyU, I have been given many chances to practise what I have learned in class. The course is designed to provide students with a broad-based and high-quality education in structural, environmental, transportation, hydraulic and geotechnical engineering, in addition to construction management. Extra components of the course include 8 weeks of practical training in the technologically advanced Industrial Centre and an 8-week industry placement in a company in Hong Kong, on the Chinese mainland or overseas between the second and third year. This training taught me about the real world of civil engineering. I also had the opportunity to study abroad for a semester through a subsidised exchange programme with Leeds University (UK). This broadened my horizons and showed me that professional civil engineers need more than local experience and fundamental engineering knowledge to be fully effective in their careers. For professional success, civil engineers need confidence, the ability to take the initiative and the capacity to communicate on all levels. I am glad that I studied at PolyU because the broad social and academic experience I have gained has enhanced my competitive skills and deepened my interest in the wider issues of civil engineering, all of which will help me to advance my career and contribute to society.
