Aims & Characteristics

Aims and Characteristics

Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes

This programme aims to equip students to become forward-looking, competent occupational therapists who can promote the health and well-being of people in Hong Kong.

A combination of medical, psychological, and social science subjects prepares students to enhance the functional performance of community-dwelling people with disabilities in terms of their self-care, leisure, and work. Students learn how to minimise the effects of disabilities, promote health, and improve the quality of life of clients and their families.

The programme also prepares students to deliver client-centred occupational therapy with a commitment to promoting equal opportunities for all members of the community. Furthermore, it prepares them for helping careers in which they empower clients to manage their disabilities, educate the public about healthy and meaningful living, and pass on their knowledge to new generations of therapists.

Programme Characteristics

This programme adopts an outcome-based learning approach and integrates academic and clinical education. We provide numerous excellent learning resources with up-to-date technological tools, such as web-based teaching and self-learning packages.

We also provide global learning experiences in occupational therapy. Fieldwork placements and academic exchange programmes are available in mainland China and overseas.

Placement Opportunities

Clinical education is an important component of professional training and development and is delivered through clinical placements in various settings in Hong Kong, mainland China, and overseas. Students pursue placements in a range of settings, including hospitals, outpatient clinics, childcare centres, elderly care homes, adult training centres and workshops, and long-stay care homes. Overseas clinical placements have been organised in partnership with various universities, such as Curtin University of Technology (Australia), University of South Australia (Australia), University of Toronto (Canada), McGill University (Canada), Metropolitan University College (Denmark), JAMK University of Applied Sciences (Finland), University of Southern California (US), Nanyang Polytechnic (Singapore), and Chang Gung University (Taiwan). Further overseas placements will be arranged for students in the coming years to broaden their global perspectives.

Student Message

Student Message

The BSc (Hons) in Occupational Therapy (OT) programme contains a variety of psychological, physical, and social sciences subjects to enhance students’ ability to become qualified occupational therapists. In my first year, I learned a variety of subjects, such as OT Theory & Process I and Functional Anatomy, which are specialised subjects in OT. OT Theory & Process I introduces the process and beliefs of OT and teaches students how to apply OT models to analyse different cases to understand the patient’s occupation thoroughly. I liked this subject very much because it helped me understand the history and knowledge of OT. Functional Anatomy gives plentiful information about the human structure, which is vital for palpation in clinical practice.

In addition to the above subjects, other subjects help develop students’ leadership and communication skills, which is essential for an occupational therapist. The school also provides English and Chinese studies for students to improve their language skills in the first year. These subjects are interesting because there are many group projects and games; they also provide an excellent opportunity to make friends.

During my second year of studying BSc (Hons) in Occupational Therapy at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, I improved my knowledge and skills in musculoskeletal rehabilitation through different practice sessions. Through the lessons, I had the opportunity to experience various hands-on activities, such as fabricating splints, tailor-making pressure garments, and learning transfer techniques. The teachers observed and corrected my mistakes, which helped me improve and gain more confidence. Applying theoretical knowledge to actual practice can be challenging, but continuous practice allowed me to hone my skills to be more professional. The practical sessions were very helpful because they better prepared me for my upcoming clinical placement.

After two years of studying occupational therapy, I gained a deeper insight into the essential roles, critical judgments, and professional skills of a competent occupational therapist. Occupational therapy allowed me to understand how I can provide creative, significant, and diverse support to people in different aspects of their lives.
