Management skills are required by all business professionals. As an area of study, management is concerned with how to get the best out of people and other resources.

This programme provides students with a well-rounded business education and training in general management, along with an opportunity to specialise in human resource management. Students are equipped with a wide range of management skills to give them the potential to develop as business leaders in Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland and the region.

Programme Characteristics

Management is a lively and interesting subject to study. Our programme emphasises the development of both academic and professional knowledge and practical skills in general management and human resource management, including communication and presentation, leadership and teamwork, problem solving and the effective use of information technology.

The programme offers a wide range of subject choices in the fields of general, strategy and human resource management, such as Business Negotiation, Environmental Management for Business, Gender & Organisations, Management Practice Through Real World Projects, Managing Diversity in Organisations, China Business Management, Employee Relations, Employment Law, HRM in China, International HRM, Reward & Performance Management, Staffing & Selection and Training & Development.  Students can choose subjects within the HRM concentration to obtain recognition from professional bodies.

There is a strong emphasis on interactive and student-centred learning methods, including case studies, role playing and simulation exercises. Visits to companies and other organisations are arranged, and practitioners are invited to share their practical experience with students as guest speakers.

All students within the Faculty of Business are encouraged to participate in the Whole Person Development Programme (WPDP), which includes a range of extracurricular activities, such as leadership training camps, peer tutoring, mentorship and exchanges overseas and in the Chinese mainland. Each student is assigned a professional mentor who is an experienced executive or manager in the business world. Mentors provide advice and support for students planning their careers and preparing for their first jobs after graduation.

Subject to availability, BBA students can spend a semester studying at another university overseas or in the Chinese mainland and have the credits counted towards their PolyU degree.

Work-Integrated Education (WIE)
To graduate, every student must complete 100 hours (3 training credits) of WIE. The Department has developed opportunities for students to work in firms either during the summer vacation or as part-timers. Student Message

Looking back, this four-year university journey has been enjoyable and meaningful. The Management programme provided me with the skills and knowledge I needed for professional development, including analytical skills, communication techniques and in-depth knowledge.

PolyU not only emphasises the importance of academic achievement, but also makes lots of effort to encourage and enable students to expand their horizons. During the second semester in Year 3, I took an exchange trip to Sweden, which brought me many marvellous and remarkable experiences. I experienced the Western learning style, interviewed a Swedish entrepreneur and enjoyed intense discussion during class. In my spare time, I went travelling and explored different countries. I visited Iceland and was impressed by its glaciers and the Northern Lights. I enjoyed the sunlight and passion of Barcelona. I miss the wonderful views in Mykonos. I am extremely grateful to PolyU for giving me this chance to step out my comfort zone, and I will never forget this precious experience.

The BBA Management course equipped me both personally and academically. I know that you will not regret choosing it.

Chan Ka Ting, Macody

Time flies, and four years of university life just slipped away. University life is wonderful but difficult. It is full of both challenges and joy. Students grow from ignorance to maturity, experiencing much more than they expected and handling things better than ever.

I remember that while still at high school, I wanted to find a place that would allow me to push my boundaries, broaden my horizon and make new friends. PolyU definitely fulfils all of these needs while providing adequate protection and support for students. As a student of Management in the BBA programme, I had several valuable chances to learn and apply my knowledge, academic and non-academic. The experience of overseas Work-Integrated Education not only gave me the opportunity to explore future career paths, but also deepened my understanding of how businesses work in different cultures. Moreover, PolyU organises countless programmes that allow students to step out their comfort zones. The exchange programme is one of those. These meaningful experiences enhanced my personal growth and development, as they provided me with a supportive environment that allowed me to safely step out of my comfort zone.

Besides the above activities, I went on two overseas volunteer service trips, both student-initiated. This helped me to hone my skills in dealing with people and decision making, giving me the chance to enjoy full autonomy throughout the service projects.

I am truly thankful for the opportunities that given by PolyU to find out who I am and equip myself for the future path, either career path or future life. Even though my university life ended, the positive attitude and conquer base of knowledge will be carried to face the future challenges in life.

Looking back on my studies at PolyU, I am so grateful to be a student in the BBA Management programme. This programme provides me with opportunities to explore and understand the business environment. Besides, it develops my critical thinking skills as well as innovation via various projects, case studies and discussions. With abundant learning resources and the guidance of supportive professors, I have gained both practical and academic skills, making me more competitive in the workplace.

LI Pik Yee, Kimmy

My four years at PolyU have been a marvellous experience.

PolyU is more than just an institute where you learn and practise your skills; it is an incubator of personal growth, a platform that facilitates personal connections and a channel to the wider world.

During my studies at PolyU, I was invited to participate in international forums such as the USLS in Vietnam and the Boao Forum for Asia in China. Students are encouraged to step up and improve ourselves by participating in exchanges, study tours and other activities outside Hong Kong. I visited developing countries such as Cambodia and Myanmar and became aware of the needs of others. I also travelled through more developed places like Singapore and Taiwan to experience their unique cultures and values. The University offers many eye-opening opportunities that challenge you to see the world from another perspective.

The high-quality and up-to-date content of the courses further connected me with modern organizational practices. My WIE experiences in Shanghai started me on my career path in the field of management.

My time here has been fruitful and worthwhile, and I am now well prepared for the future.

My four years at Hong Kong Polytechnic University have flown by. I found my time here to be enriching and colourful. Inspired by the motto “To learn and to apply, for the benefit of mankind”, students gain not only theoretical and practical knowledge, but also the determination “to enrich ourselves and to broaden our horizons”. PolyU encourages students to participate in a variety of academic, career and community areas, and offers extensive opportunities and resources such as scholarships and sponsorships for the Overseas Exchange Programme, Work-Integrated Education and “Service-Learning”.

I participated in both local and overseas internships. These fruitful experiences enabled me to gain work experience, broadened my international exposure and helped me figure out my future career path. It was also my honour to be an executive committee member of the Faculty of Business Students’ Association. This invaluable opportunity helped to enhance my networking skills and leadership potential. My university life as a Management student will, I am sure, remain one of my most precious memories, and will be invaluable to my future development.

The BBA in Management programme offered me an excellent foundation and abundant opportunities to learn and develop. The faculty and the University as a whole devote extensive resources to students' academic and non-academic development.

Looking back over the last four years of studying and living at PolyU, I can see how exploring the academic areas I was interested in led to good results, and I now have clearer expectations of my future career based on studying different subjects. My involvement in student and departmental associations also gave me fruitful experiences of university life.

In addition to opportunities to study diverse subjects, PolyU gave me various options and support that contributed to my personal and career development. I received two overseas internship opportunities in Australia and Ireland through the Career and Placement Service Office. I was able to apply the knowledge and theories I had acquired from my university studies in the internships. In addition, I gained invaluable insights into the global workplace and daily life in foreign countries.

If you wish to become a well-rounded person with sound business knowledge, PolyU and the BBA in Management programme are good choices for you.

Tropical rainforests have high levels of biodiversity, as a wide variety of species can grow in such an ecosystem. We are like the animals and plants in the tropical rainforest of PolyU.

For plants and trees to grow healthily, the soil must be very fertile to provide enough nutrients and support. Indeed, PolyU and the Faculty of Business provide us with the most desirable foundation for growth. Access to many business competitions are provided, and support and practical coaching are always available. Entering these competitions not only gives me more exposure to the world of business, but also helps me develop a global outlook.

The Faculty of Business also nurtures and promotes diversity by allowing us to develop autonomously. The BBA programme offers great flexibility in study paths. In each semester, I allowed myself a couple of days off, and took advantage of the free time to join more business competitions and extra-curricular activities at school. Outside the university, I joined hiking clubs and volunteer groups in my free time; being a hike leader gave me the opportunity to practise and apply the leadership and communication skills I had learned in school.

Without the nourishing foundation and autonomy offered by PolyU, I would have had a rather simple and boring university life. All my classmates have developed their own strengths and directions throughout these four years, yet we all share one thing in common – we are well equipped and more than ready to enter the commercial world!
