Aims & Characteristics

Aims and Characteristics

Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes

The programme aims to provide students with a sound education in electrical engineering. The programme is designed to produce engineering technologists/technicians who can practise electrical engineering with competence in Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland and the neighbouring regions. The programme emphasises foundational knowledge and its applications, practical skills, problem-solving ability and team spirit.

Programme Characteristics

This programme paves the way for graduates to further study for a professional qualification. It aims to provide a route of articulation to degree programmes. Graduates can obtain up to two years of exemption from study of a four-year Honours degree programme in a similar discipline.

Recognition & Prospects

Career Prospects

Electrical engineers are required in many large industries, with demand far exceeding supply. They often work in the following areas:

  • Electric power generation
  • Intelligent buildings
  • Electric mass transportation
  • Electric and hybrid vehicles
  • Control and automation
  • Electric apparatus development
  • Environmental control
  • Renewable energy
  • Product manufacturing
  • Building services
  • Energy auditing
  • Highway lighting and control
  • Utility companies (e.g. airports, gas, water, telecommunications)

Graduates can readily access relevant challenging and rewarding careers. They are particularly welcomed by employers because of their outstanding theoretical backgrounds and application-oriented experiences.

  • Students study all essential elements of electrical engineering, supported by physics, mathematics, electronics, computing, mechanical engineering, Chinese and English.
  • Year One covers a diverse range of Foundation Subjects, such as Physics, Mathematics, Languages, Computing and Electronics. Year One teaching extends to the summer.
  • Year Two covers essential technical subjects in electrical engineering. Students also undertake a Group Project during this year.
  • More information on the subjects and progression pattern can be found at

Student Message

In the HKDSE, I only scored level 2 in English. As a result, I failed to gain admission to a degree programme. I chose to study the Higher Diploma in Electrical Engineering after serious consideration. Before the start of the semester, I worried whether I could catch up with the pace of learning in the programme. Luckily, I met many helpful professors who supported me in overcoming my problems.  When I encountered difficulties, they were willing to answer my questions and gave me detailed explanations.

The programme features many lab sessions that help me to understand how theories can put into practice. I have also learned how to analyse and build a circuit. The professional training in the Industrial Centre has also provided me with the opportunity to apply theories in practice. Joining this programme was certainly my right choice.

If you are not sure about something, ask. That is what I did and that is what all students should do. The lecturers in the Department of Electrical Engineering not only give lectures but also answer students’ questions in detail. I have learned a lot from my lecturers.

PolyU offers many resources for students. Students' mental well-being is always the university’s priority. PolyU has the ability and experience to support you throughout your journey, from starting university life as a freshman to planning your career in your final year of study - as long as you have the courage to ask.

That's why I encourage you all to ask, because if you do, PolyU will equip you with the mental fortitude and knowledge to pave a route to your future.

LI Max

Over my two years of study at PolyU, I experienced a memorable time on campus. The subject of Electrical Engineering covers a great range of topics, such as computer systems, electrical services and power electronics. Apart from studying physics, mathematics and subjects related to electrical engineering, we took language and communication courses and received practical training in the Industrial Centre. With the support and encouragement of professors and tutors, I was equipped to become an engineer.

There are many laboratories in the Department of Electrical Engineering. With the latest tools and devices, students can revise and practise what they have learned in the laboratories. In sum, PolyU provides the best environments and most knowledgeable teachers, allowing students to explore every possibility. I hope you will become one of us.
