Aims & Characteristics

Aims and Characteristics

Programme Aims

Learning and teaching are our core activities. We are committed to nurturing our students’ professional competence and supporting their all-round development.

Students complete some General University Requirements core and fundamental business subjects at an early stage. They then choose one of the following awards as their specialism for graduation.

BBA (Hons) in Management

Management skills are required by all business professionals. As an area of study, management is concerned with how to get the best out of people and other resources.

This programme provides students with a well-rounded business education and training in general management, along with the opportunity to specialise in human resource management. Students are equipped with a wide range of management skills to give them the potential to develop as business leaders in Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland and the region.

BBA (Hons) in Marketing

This programme provides students with a well-rounded business education; competence in the analysis, planning, implementation and control of marketing decisions; analytical ability and research competence; the ability to communicate, interact and intervene in the integrative role that is ascribed to marketing; appreciation of the responsibilities of marketing professionals within broader environmental and international contexts; and literacy in the use of information systems and technology that is relevant to marketing.

All students within the Faculty of Business are encouraged to participate in a range of extracurricular activities, such as leadership training camps, peer tutoring, and mentorship.

If students wish, and subject to availability, they can spend a semester studying at another university overseas or in mainland China, with the credits counted towards their PolyU degree.

Work-Integrated Education (WIE)

To graduate, every student must complete 100 hours (3 training credits) of WIE. The Department offers opportunities for students to work in firms either during the summer vacation or alongside their studies. Summer placements may be available in Hong Kong, in mainland China or overseas. These and other forms of work experience count towards the WIE requirement.

Characteristics of Scheme-based Admission

Students first follow a common curriculum under the Scheme.

It offers students approximately one year to identify their area(s) of interest and career aspirations, which facilitates their Major programme selection.

The decision to admit a student to a Major programme will be made by the Department based on the student’s choice, overall GPA of Year One study, and individual subject results (i.e., MM2021 Management and Organisation and MM2711 Introduction to Marketing). Students will be asked to indicate their choices of Major programme during Semester 2 of their Year One study for the Department’s consideration and approval.

In the event of oversubscription for any of the programmes, the number of students admitted to that programme will be capped at 60% of the number of students in the respective years.

Student Message

Student Message

My 4 years at PolyU were a memorable and rewarding experience, during which I learned, adapted and developed. Before gaining admission to the PolyU BBA programme, I had no specific interests or career goals. However, the curriculum of the Business Management programme allowed me to gain an in-depth knowledge of business organisations and the global marketplace. PolyU also encourages practical learning experiences in the workplace by giving students opportunities to acquire internships and hands-on experience and to apply theories learned and case studies in real-life business settings in preparation for our future career development. PolyU provides an extensive and all-round curriculum that allows students to utilise their academic knowledge for both their personal and their career development.

I admire PolyU for embracing cultural diversity and for its dedication to providing students with a global outlook and international exposure. I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to participate in the Work-Integrated Education programme, taking up an internship in a diamond-focused jewellery company in New York City. This work experience allowed me to realise my passion, and it also acted as a turning point in my career development, leading me to pursue different career pathways suited to my interests.

All of these years of study at PolyU helped me to shape directions and set goals for my future career. PolyU emphasises not only academic performance but also the importance of equipping students with a comprehensive skillset and experiences.

Life is full of uncertainty and things often do not turn out as we plan or expect. However, when life gives you lemons, you should use them to make lemonade. Graduating from the PolyU BBA programme was far from the end of my learning process. Seizing every opportunity to learn and become a well-rounded individual with the right attitude is undoubtedly the key to achieving success. I learned this during my 4 years at PolyU.

Yue Hei To, Odelia

The chance to study at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University was invaluable. The programme gave me opportunities to connect with different people from all around the world and broaden my international insights. Studying in Finland was a memorable experience, helping me to get along with foreign students. Please do not be discouraged by the cost of such experiences, because the University supports and encourages us to explore the world through various scholarships.

Loads of extra-curricular activities are available to foster our social well-being. I served as a society committee member. These activities not only develop students’ communication skills and critical thinking but also prepares them for future careers. I urge each of you to seize the chance to take part in such activities; you will at least make new friends. I truly appreciate the commitment of our university to providing a variety of activities to support students’ personal growth.

Last but not least, I am thankful to all our beloved teachers, as they were always there when we needed support. There are also many supporting facilities, such as classrooms and discussion areas, as well as technical assistance. After I graduate this year, I will miss my enriching university life at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Chong Wai Ki, Vicky

Time has  passed so quickly; I can’t believe that my life as a university student is about to be over. Looking back, studying at PolyU has been the best time of my life, during which I have made many friends and gained new perspectives.

This world is so much more than what you see in the classroom. PolyU emphasises and invests in all-round development. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in business competitions and Work-Integrated Education. Of all of my internship experiences, the most memorable was speaking at the GSMA Mobile World Congress Shanghai 2018, one of the world’s largest mobile and communications industries. I once had limited understanding of such advanced network technologies, but I gained in-depth industry knowledge first hand from professionals at China Unicom and elsewhere. My internships and volunteer experiences greatly broadened my horizons and developed my leadership skills.

To conclude, my life at PolyU has been fruitful and enriching. I truly believe that the BBA in Management programme improves academic knowledge, nurtures personal skills and enhances future career development. Although I may face many uncertainties and obstacles on my career journey, I will never stop striving.

Chan Pui Sze, Patricia

I proudly present myself as a Management student at PolyU.

The courses in this Bachelor’s programme give me the flexibility I need to “own” my learning. With the guidance and experience sharing of various teachers and practitioners via the Department, Faculty and University, I decided on my own stream in management and chose corresponding courses. I am grateful to be taught by world-class instructors. I have learned about important topics in the field of organisational management. The Department and Faculty encourage and enable students to connect and exchange their ideas with practitioners. This has given me invaluable opportunities to understand the context of the workplace. Through my academic and workplace learning, I have become well equipped to compare, analyse and obtain new insights. It has been rewarding to conduct research in the business field.

My experience at MM has been great so far. I have had numerous opportunities to explore the world. I gained independence and self-reliance by travelling to Hangzhou China, Singapore, and Greece for internships. Proactively spurring my whole-person development, I have joined programmes that have helped me to develop a global vision through exposure to different cultures and communities. This has added a lot of value to my learning at MM. It has taught me to own my learning, my future career and my life.

Ng Ka Yan, Yannie

Looking back, this 4-year university journey has been enjoyable and meaningful. The Management programme has provided me with the skills and knowledge I need for professional development, including analytical and communication skills.

PolyU not only emphasises the importance of academic achievement but also makes lots of effort to encourage and enable students to expand their horizons. During the second semester in Year 3, I took an exchange trip to Sweden, which gave me many remarkable insights. I experienced the Western learning style, interviewed a Swedish entrepreneur, and enjoyed intense discussion during class. In my spare time, I went travelling and explored other countries. I visited Iceland and was impressed by its glaciers and the Northern Lights. I enjoyed the warm weather and passion of Barcelona. I still miss the wonderful views in Mykonos. I am extremely grateful to PolyU for giving me this chance to step out of my comfort zone. I will never forget this experience.

The BBA Management course has equipped me to succeed both personally and academically. I know that you will not regret choosing it.

Chan Ka Ting, Macody

Time flies, and 4 years have just slipped away. University life is wonderful but difficult. It is full of both challenges and joy. Students mature both intellectually and personally, experiencing much more than they expected and learning how to tackle new challenges.

I remember that while still at high school, I wanted to find a university that would allow me to push my boundaries, broaden my horizons, and make new friends. PolyU definitely fulfils all of these needs, while also providing adequate protection and support for students. While studying Management in the BBA programme, I had several valuable chances to learn and apply my knowledge, both academic and non-academic. My overseas Work-Integrated Education experience not only gave me the opportunity to explore future career paths but also deepened my understanding of how businesses work in different cultures. Moreover, PolyU organises countless programmes that allow students to try new things. Exchange trips are one example. These meaningful experiences enhanced my personal growth and development, as they provided me with a supportive environment that allowed me to safely step out of my comfort zone.

Besides the above activities, I went on two overseas volunteer service trips, both student-initiated. This helped me to hone my skills in dealing with people and decision making. I enjoyed full autonomy throughout the service projects.

I am truly thankful for the opportunities PolyU has given me to find out who I am and equip myself for the future, both professionally and personally. Although my university life has ended, the positive attitude and solid base of knowledge I have gained at PolyU will help me face future challenges in life.

Kwong Ka Ki

Looking back on my studies at PolyU, I am so grateful to have been a student in the BBA Management programme. This programme provided me with opportunities to explore and understand the business environment. Besides, it developed my critical thinking skills and innovativeness via various projects, case studies, and discussions. With abundant learning resources and the guidance of supportive professors, I gained both practical and academic skills, making me more competitive in the workplace.

LI Pik Yee, Kimmy

My four years at PolyU have been a marvellous experience.

PolyU is more than just an institute where you learn and practise your skills; it is an incubator of personal growth, a platform that facilitates personal connections, and a channel to the wider world.

During my studies at PolyU, I was invited to participate in international forums such as the USLS in Vietnam and the Boao Forum for Asia in China. Students are encouraged to step up and improve themselves by participating in exchanges, study tours and other activities outside Hong Kong. I visited developing countries such as Cambodia and Myanmar and became more aware of the needs of others. I also travelled through more developed places such as Singapore and Taiwan to experience their unique cultures and values. The University offers many eye-opening opportunities that challenge students to see the world from new perspectives.

The high-quality and up-to-date content of the courses further connected me with modern organisational practices. My WIE experiences in Shanghai set me on my career path in the field of management.

My time here has been fruitful and worthwhile, and I am now well prepared for the future.

Wu Wai Lok

My four years at Hong Kong Polytechnic University flew by. I found my time here to be enriching and colourful. Inspired by the motto “To learn and to apply, for the benefit of mankind”, students gain not only theoretical and practical knowledge but also the determination “to enrich ourselves and to broaden our horizons”. PolyU encourages students to participate in a variety of academic, career and community activities and offers extensive opportunities and resources, such as scholarships and sponsorship for the Overseas Exchange programme, Work-Integrated Education and Service-Learning.

I participated in both local and overseas internships. These fruitful experiences enabled me to gain work experience, broadened my international exposure and helped me figure out my future career path. It was also my honour to serve as an executive committee member for the Faculty of Business Students’ Association. This invaluable opportunity helped to enhance my networking skills and leadership potential. My university life as a Management student will, I am sure, remain one of my most precious memories, and will be invaluable to my future development.

Yeung Mei Shan

The BBA in Management programme gave me an excellent foundation and abundant opportunities to learn and develop. The Faculty and the University as a whole invest extensive resources in supporting students’ academic and non-academic development.

Looking back over the last 4 years of studying and living at PolyU, I can see how exploring the academic areas I was interested in led to good results. I now have clearer expectations of my future career, based on studying different subjects. Joining student and departmental associations also gave me fruitful new experiences during my university life.

In addition to opportunities to study diverse subjects, PolyU gave me various options and support that contributed to my personal and career development. I undertook two overseas internships, in Australia and Ireland, through the Career and Placement Service Office. I was able to apply the knowledge and theories I had acquired at university during these internships. In addition, I gained invaluable insights into the global workplace and daily life in foreign countries.

If you wish to become a well-rounded person with sound business knowledge, PolyU and the BBA in Management programme are good choices for you.

Wong Wing Lam

For plants and trees to grow healthily, the soil must be fertile, providing  nutrients and support. PolyU and the Faculty of Business provide students with just such a foundation for growth. For example, I had the chance to enter numerous business competitions, and support and practical coaching are always available. Entering competitions not only gave me more exposure to the world of business but also helped me develop a global outlook.

Tropical rainforests have high levels of biodiversity, as a wide variety of species can grow in such an ecosystem. We are like the animals and plants in the tropical rainforest of PolyU. The Faculty of Business nurtures and promotes diversity by allowing us to develop autonomously. The BBA programme offers great flexibility in terms of study paths. Each semester, I allowed myself a couple of days off, and I took advantage of this free time to enter more business competitions and take part in extra-curricular activities. Outside the university, I joined hiking clubs and volunteer groups in my free time; being a hike leader gave me the opportunity to apply the leadership and communication skills I had gained at PolyU.

Without the nourishing foundation and autonomy offered by PolyU, I would have had a rather simple and boring university life. All of my classmates developed their own strengths and pursued their own directions in the last 4 years, but we all have one thing in common – we are well equipped and more than ready to enter the commercial world!

Chu Ho Yin Kevin

PolyU provides a unique learning experience that empowers students to realise their full potential. Support from faculty, the Work-Integrated Education programme, and the well structured curriculum equipped me with exceptional theoretical knowledge and practical skills. While working as a consultant at Ernst & Young, I was able to apply the knowledge and skills I had gained at PolyU in real life to accomplish various management projects.

Another memorable experience was participating in the Service-Learning programme. Working with Heep Hong Society to serve students with special educational needs taught me the importance of being a good citizen who empathises with others.

Studying at PolyU was a life-changing experience that armed me with vital skills and prepared me to overcome unanticipated future challenges.

Wong Tsz Yan

“To learn and to apply, for the benefit of mankind” is the motto of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. PolyU encourages students to learn and explore new ideas and different avenues and to tackle challenges head on. In my 4 years at PolyU, I gained a deeper understanding of its motto.

During this time, I became more independent and gained a greater sense of responsibility for my learning. I won a place on the Dean’s List for my outstanding academic performance. The excellent lecturers and study environment at PolyU helped me to learn faster and better.

In addition, student exchange and internship opportunities trained me to become a competent team player in the workplace. During my internship at Shanghai Advertising Ltd., I was able to apply what I had learned and advance my communication skills in the workplace. This was also a valuable opportunity for me to work in mainland China.

Chan Wai Man

Studying Management at PolyU has been a fruitful journey for me. During these 4 years, I have had many opportunities to equip myself with technical knowledge and gain international exposure through different programmes organised by PolyU.

PolyU invests a lot of resources to support students’ personal development and broaden their horizons. To fulfil the Work-Integrated Education requirement, I participated in two overseas internships, in China and Ireland. I had the chance to work with business professionals, giving me a taste of working in the real business world. I also studied in Prague, Czech Republic as an exchange student, allowing me to develop a global mindset by meeting people from different parts of the world. I even competed in several business competitions and was selected to join a study tour in the UK, where we took courses at local universities and visited the London Stock Exchange. These experiences were memorable and special.

PolyU and FB have supported my learning and exploration for 4 years. I believe that the Management programme nurtures well-rounded graduates.

Wong Ka Yee Stephanie

Ip Wing Lam

PolyU has given me many valuable opportunities to become a well-rounded individual. If I had to describe my university life in just three words, I would choose the words “eye-opening”, “enjoyable” and “memorable”.

My academic studies have equipped me with the theoretical knowledge and skills needed to excel in the workplace. My practical skills have also been enhanced through the Work-Integrated Education programme. My internship experiences gave me a closer look at various industries, helping me to determine the most suitable career path.

Academic and job-related knowledge aside, PolyU provides an array of extracurricular activities and programmes to nurture students’ whole-person development. My soft skills have been strengthened by participating in international exchange and Service-Learning activities and joining student societies.

My overseas exchange trip allowed me to step out of my comfort zone, develop a global outlook, and cultivate a strong cultural awareness. This was definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience, which added even more colour to my vibrant university life. Besides, PolyU’s Service-Learning programme enhanced my sense of civic responsibility and societal engagement. I am grateful for these opportunities to demonstrate my passion for helping people in need and to develop and exhibit service leadership. In my pursuit of excellence and personal development, I have also joined various student societies, such as Aiesec. Being a member of Aiesec has given me opportunities to unleash my leadership potential and gain hands-on event-management experience through organising school workshops, camps, and talks to promote cultural diversity and leadership.

My graduation marks not only the end of my 4-year university life at PolyU but also the beginning of a brand new chapter in my life. I am grateful for all of the opportunities that PolyU has given me during this 4-year journey, which has made me a more well-rounded individual. With the solid foundation and skills I have acquired at PolyU, I am well prepared to embrace the challenges ahead. I will never stop seeking opportunities for self-improvement and growth.

Lo Tsz Ching Christy

My time at PolyU provided me with a wide range of experiences. I was given the chance to explore different countries, engage with business professionals, develop an international business mindset, and improve my public speaking skills.

I was selected to attend the HK-US Business Council Roundtable Conference in Seattle with Professor Alexander Wai (Vice-President of PolyU). I also spent a semester as an exchange student at Aston University in Birmingham, UK. I was also given the opportunity to organise several events for students in the Department of Management and Marketing, through which I learned to appreciate the planning and teamwork necessary for success. I also worked as a marketing assistant intern at Sing Tao News Corporation.

I studied hard and was awarded three scholarships, which motivated me to aim even higher. Drawing on my own experience, I was able to provide support and guidance for other students on their education journeys.

Ho Ming Ho

My 4 years at PolyU were well spent at PolyU. Not only did I receive a holistic education, but I was also lucky enough to explore the world. These experiences broadened my horizons.

An exchange trip to Georgia State University in the US allowed me to interact with people from different countries. I had both exhilarating and frustrating experiences while living abroad, but all of these moments made me more flexible and independent.

PolyU emphasises not only academic performance but also civic responsibility. By joining Service-Learning courses, one of which allowed me to travel to Inner Mongolia, I was able to make use of my knowledge to serve others, putting theory into practice, and polish my language skills. This gave me a huge sense of satisfaction.

Ng Chuk Man, Blair

Thank you, PolyU, for offering me such a rewarding university life. I was very lucky to be given the chance to study at Yonsei University in South Korea as an exchange student. The trip was definitely fruitful. I broadened my horizons by meeting students from all over the world and exchanging my ideas with Korean professors. The experience made me a more proactive and independent person. The university also encourages students to participate in different internship programmes. The career support provided by the school is very beneficial. Teachers are also friendly and willing to give career advice to students. During my 4-year study at PolyU, I took part in three internship programmes, which helped me turn things that I had learned in lessons into practical skills at work. I am sure that the experience has helped me to become a more competitive candidate in society.
