Aims and Characteristics

Programme Aims

This is the Senior Year Entry 2-year BSc (Hons) Hotel Management programme.

The BSc(Hons) in Hotel Management educates students about the business of hotel management. Its customer-service focus enables graduates to excel in the hotel industry.  The unique structure of the programme also enables students to develop specialised expertise in hotel general management, food service management, or hotel administration.

This multidisciplinary programme prepares students for careers at the management level in the hotel, food service and broader service industries, either locally or internationally.

Students will learn to be customer-focused, analytical and independent, and at the same time develop communication and leadership skills.  They gain a global perspective to meet the growing challenges that are faced by the dynamic hotel and tourism industries.




Students are exposed to a wide variety of subjects in their areas of study.  Work-Integrated Education (WIE) is an important feature of the programme, through which students can gain useful work experience either locally or overseas.

In addition to normal classroom teaching, field trips and visits are also widely used teaching and learning methods.

The School of Hotel and Tourism Management recognises that language and multicultural skills are two important qualities that graduates need to succeed in today's global hospitality and tourism industries.  Hence, students can choose to participate in international exchange programmes and study at an overseas hotel and tourism school for a semester.  Students joining outbound exchange programme may need to undertake their WIE in part-time mode or their graduation will probably be delayed.


In the first semester of the first year of study, students mainly study General University Requirement (GUR) subjects, including Cluster Area Requirement (CAR) and Service Learning subjects. They also study Common Subjects and Discipline-specific Subjects.  The second semester is mainly Work-Integrated Education (WIE).  Some students may also go for one semester of exchange study in the second semester of the first year.

In the second and final year of study, students choose one of the 3 Career Track Options: Hotel General Management, Restaurant and Hotel Foodservice Management, or Hotel Administration.  During this year, they also choose the Honours Thesis option or the Capstone Project option.

There is no Major/Minor option for the Senior Year Entry programme.

Recognition and Prospects

Career Prospects

As graduates and after some years of experience, students will be qualified for management positions in the hotel, food service and broader service sectors, depending on their programme specialisation.

Career opportunities for graduates of this programme include those in hotels, cruise ships, hostels, staff/visitor quarters in hospitals and institutions, serviced apartments, independent restaurants, restaurant chains, dining and catering facilities in hotels, cruise ships, conference and exhibition centres, shopping malls, hospitals, clubs and associations, and institutions.

Entrance Requirements

  • Higher Diploma in Hotel, Tourism or MICE related programmes; OR
  • Associate Degree in Hotel, Tourism, or Convention and Event Management OR in Business (with Hospitality or Tourism focus).
  • Local applicants with equivalent qualifications and discipline orientations to the above will also be considered based on academic merit and subject to a successful interview.
  • Mature individuals with relevant academic qualifications and industry experience may also be considered.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with good results in languages.
  • Interviews will be arranged for suitable candidates based on academic results obtained in the HD or AD programmes.

I had never imagined that college life could be so extraordinary. It is not just the great facilities of PolyU itself but the efforts that people put in to make sure you can develop comprehensively that make it so special. By offering scholarships, extracurricular activities, internships, Service-Learning opportunities and international exchange programmes, PolyU gives its students chances to learn and grow in the academic world while preparing them professionally. 


As of 2017/18, the School of Hotel and Tourism Management of PolyU is ranked among the top three hospitality and leisure management institutions in the world. Passionate and experienced teachers and world-class teaching facilities at Hotel ICON, where learning meets training, are all housed under one roof. The school offers students various opportunities to learn in real-life settings. For example, those majoring in Hotel Management can follow the Food and Beverage Management course where they can run a restaurant and have a taste of what service and kitchen roles are like.


The Service-Learning component of many courses is another unique feature of PolyU. Unlike traditional volunteering, it values learning as much as serving. For my Service-Learning project I organised a 5-day summer camp for elementary students in Minhang, Shanghai. The project meant much more to me than just serving people; I stepped out of my comfort zone and improved my cooperative and interpersonal skills.

Interview Arrangement

Date: Between March and June
Mode:Individual interview

To obtain a better understanding of the overall academic and non-academic qualities and achievements of the applicants, and to test, at a more advanced level, the overall knowledge of the applicants and their responses to a specific situational problem arising out of a real-life context in the hospitality, tourism or convention & exhibition industry. The interview will also serve to test the language and communication skills of the applicants.
