Aims and Characteristics

Programme Aims

The aims of the proposed programme are as follows.

  1. To produce graduates with good fundamental computing and finance concepts, sound intellectual and practical skills, and the ability to think critically.
  2. To produce graduates who can effectively and creatively apply computing and related technologies to different information processing areas in finance sectors through the interplay of technical, business and other aspects.
  3. To produce graduates who can keep abreast of innovative technologies as well as the ethical and legal issues, and be able to engage in life-long learning in the finance and computing disciplines.
  4. To produce graduates with professional knowledge and all-round capabilities who can contribute to society and the development of Hong Kong and China.

This programme targets sub-degree graduates from two major disciplines. It can admit both ICT-related and finance-related sub-degree graduates.

The programme facilitates inter-disciplinary learning of FinTech via a variety of mechanisms, e.g. organising FinTech seminars with experts in the fields of finance and IT, and collaborating with different experts to provide joint supervision of capstone projects.

Building on the core of computing/IT and finance/financial services, the curriculum of the programme focuses on the foundations of Internet technology, business and financial modelling, big data analytics and information security.

To graduate, students must fulfil the following credit requirements:

  1. General University Requirement (6 credits in Cluster Area Requirements and 3 credits in Service Learning)
  2. Discipline-specific Requirement (55 credits in a 3-tier model covering Foundation Subjects, Strengthening Subjects and Specialised Subjects)
  3. Work-Integrated Education (Training) (4 credits)

Note: Students not meeting the equivalent standard of the Undergraduate Degree Language Communication Requirements (LCR) based on their previous studies in AD/HD programmes and their academic performance will be required to take additional credits (6 in English and 3 in Chinese) on top of the programme's normal credit requirements.

Information on the subjects offered can be obtained at

Recognition and Prospects

Professional Recognition

The programme will seek professional accreditation from the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE). Recognition of and accreditation by other professional bodies, such as the Hong Kong Institute for IT Professional Certification (HKITPC), the Hong Kong Internet Finance (HKIFA) and the Institute of Financial Planners Hong Kong (IFPHK), will also be explored.

Career Prospects

Opportunities in FinTech are enormous in Hong Kong and worldwide. Some reports have already pointed out that Hong Kong is short of FinTech talents.

Graduates of the programme are expected to become financial technologists who can fill the talent gap of the fast growing FinTech field.

Entrance Requirements

An Associate Degree or Higher Diploma from a recognised institution in information and communications technology (ICT)-related or finance-related disciplines.

Remarks: For students from finance-related disciplines, preference will be given to those who have IT backgrounds.
